Inspired by www.reddit.com/r/MapPorn/comments/esq9ay/all_roads_in_sco..., here's all the roads on the island of Ireland

• OpenStreetMap data downloaded as PBF files from download.openstreetmap.fr/extracts/europe/

○ Ireland

○ Northern Ireland

• OGR2OGR used to convert and combine the two PBF files into one SQLite database

• The "Lines" table from the resulting SQLite database was imported to QGIS

• The data were filtered so that only lines where "highway" is NOT NULL were included

• Separate layers were created for the following "highway" types and styled with different thicknesses of lines (from thicker at Motorways to thinner at Tracks)

○ Motorways

○ Trunk and primary roads

○ Secondary roads

○ Tertiary roads

○ Tracks

• From the remaining layer the following "highway" types were excluded

○ abandoned

○ demolished

○ disused

○ footway

○ cycleway

○ gallop

○ proposed

○ planned

○ bus_stop

○ bridleway

○ path

○ razed

I got an email Wednesday morning, as I sat down at my desk in my home office with a bowl of yogurt and granola, that I needed to be in San Jose, CA on Thursday for the Google Developer Day 2007. Google was to make an announcement about Gears, we were participating in the keynote about this new offering, and I needed to be present for technical assistance. I booked the flight, and about twelve hours later was on the ground.

The conference is a free event, that outgrew the project 100 attendees and turned into 1,500 onsite and a total of 5,000 around the globe (many of the sessions were simultaneously web cast). My first impression resulted in the question: what did Google do to get such a religious following in such a short amount of time. The answer to that was evident, when the only non-solicited applause from an otherwise anticlimactic keynote came from Jeff Huber saying that Google makes free services for developers.

I attended a few sessions, mostly related to Gears which provides an offline component for web applications. The browser plug-in is built around SQLite, which is the same relational database Adobe is including in Apollo. The overwhelming number of follow-up questions almost always stemmed around how to deal with synchronization. I think this is interesting seeing as data synchronization is part of the Live Cycle Data Services.

I spent most of the time hanging out with Ryan Stewart who recently joined the team, and we'll be making the return trip to the airport in a few hours.

Map of average property prices paid in 2013 in England and Wales. Based on price-paid data from the Land Registry.

Sales were binned by postcode into 1km x 1km squares aligned with the OS National Grid, and the average taken for each cell.

Colourised by quintile; blue is cheapest 20%, white is mid-price, red is most expensive 20%. There' were around 780,000 sales, with around 16 sales per km^2 cell on average.

Eleanor McHugh spends much of her time designing database for various clients using Ruby on Rails and this task is greatly facilitated by ActiveRecord Migrations.

During this presentation at the RoR eXchange 2007, She demonstrated how simple it is to setup a test environment using SQLite and then design, implement and test a fairly complex relational database using Migrations and Models. She also touched on issues of legacy database integration and/or database-driven plug-ins.

Animation showing the timeline of OpenStreetMap edits in Scotland.

Note: doesn't show ALL edits, it just uses the last-modified date of each node. So it really shows how old each part of the map is. But it should be a fairly good representation of how the map has developed and grown over time.

This is a low-quality preview (ffmpeg quality level 25) in order to keep upload size manageable.

Created using Python/Sqlite to create the database, a Processing sketch to spit out the PNG stills for each frame, and ffmpeg to create the final video.

I wanted a logging thermometer for my living room to track temperatures after I go to sleep, to get an idea for how my fires are doing. I wanted one that was inexpensive, so I built one with an Arduino! Do not be fooled into thinking I know what I'm doing.

On the laptop side is a short python script I wrote using pySerial and sqlite to read and record the temps.

essentially we were running out of space. and hopefully the new version has solved that.

apart from that there is now zoom-out and zoom-in facility in the graphs and search is now using sqlite's freetext search. the latter allows to use wildcards with asterix (*) exclude terms with minus (-) and everything else that freetext search allows

Google gears is an open source browser extension that enables web applications to provide offline functionality. The data are stored locally in a fully-searchable relational database using the sqlite engine. My Biological Network is a tool I created as a test to play with Google gears: it is used to build a network of protein-protein interactions. It uses Google Gears to record your entries on the local disk, so Gears needs to be installed on your computer.

honestly I'm surprised that I've been to this many places in Chicago in the last 7 months. kind of crazy lol.

update: ok so after checking some of the other areas, each pin DEFINITELY does NOT indicate that it's an isolated point of activity. It only indicates towers which the phone was in contact with. And obviously there's no way to tell exactly how many towers for each location. So while this map gives an idea of the locations you can't use it to quantify anything, based on the NUMBER of points.

its uploaded at 4000px wide so if you REALLY want to you can inspect closely.

"Modern business needs a reliable network storage system for centralized file sharing, network printer sharing, FTP upload/download, and data backup, etc. To store, back up, manage, and share these digital assets and outputs appropriately have become increasingly essential. However, it is a challenging job for most small business and SOHO users due to the lack of resources and professional IT staff. Now, QNAP TS-209 Pro Turbo Station offers the most ideal solution to accomplish all these needs.

QNAP TS-209 Pro Turbo Station is a 2-bay, hot-swappable All-in-one NAS (Network Attached Storage) Server supporting up to 2TB storage capacity and abundant valuable server functions. Adopting the latest powerful 500MHz CPU with 128MB DDR II RAM and Gigabit Ethernet design, TS-209 Pro's ultra-high-speed performance significantly boosts the file sharing speed and makes it a perfect choice for business users who need faster performance and useful server features. With the friendly web-based interface, users can easily set up a network system for all sorts of server applications without MIS help.

TS-209 Pro supports multiple file sharing protocols for business users to share files across Linux, Unix, Mac, and Windows platforms. Many valuable server functions including File Server, FTP Server, and Printer Server, etc., are supported to satisfy the business needs. Meanwhile, Windows ADS (Active Directory Service) is supported to help create an easy-to-access environment and lower the maintenance cost by centralized management. With the dual support of MySQL and SQLite, SMB & SOHO users can easily set up their own web and database servers flexibly.

Advanced RAID-1 mirroring with hot-swapping design, which is unique in 2-bay storage in the market, provides enterprise-class data protection and non-stop service. In case of drive failure, the hard disk drive can be replaced immediately without turning off the server and the data can be rebuilt by RAID auto-rebuilding.

TS-209 Pro provides the most complete backup solution for secure data protection with the professional backup software: NetBak Replicator. Users can select Auto-Sync/ Instant/ Schedule backup modes to back up the data on multiple Window PCs. The encrypted Remote Replication and RAID 1 disk mirroring ensures exclusive data protection.

TS-209 Pro supports various security mechanisms for data storage and management. The FTP Server enables data transfer and sharing over SSL/ TLS (explicit) encryption. The server can be accessed by remote login by SSH connection and browser-based SSL login. Users can access, store and share data securely."

This UI brought to you by Perl calling Android classes to create a Spinner (User selection at the top), a ListView (list of things I bought from Tesco recently) a TextView (containing only 'Test' because of a bug), and an EditText, containing the serving size of the previously selected item. The data is read from an sqlite DB by Perl, responding to callbacks from the Views.
