Just arrived at the Hotel after an interesting journey by train. Alas there was no kitchen worktop to perch on so had to make do with a bed lol. Sorry about the poor lighting xxx — feeling blessed
M506 passes the B&O depot in North Baltimore with the same power set seen a few days prior on M511.

CP 2204 hauls the J36 local eastbound from Humboldt Yard up the grade along the mainline to Withrow. The consist looks to be cars for the Lexington Avenue spur and Splash Products in Saint Paul. It is on the heels of CN L506 and will hold at New Brighton while the CN collects its interchange traffic from the Minnesota Commercial.
I am pleased I was able to squeeze in another shot of this train after catching it cross the Mississippi River.
CN 4781 leads for the CN 0800 Yard Job as they shove on the Firestone Spur towards Parkland Fuels in Hamilton, Ontario.
The King Spur Track starts by meandering amongst the snow gums before opening out to spectacular views across to Mt Hotham and Dinner Plain. There are several good camping areas on the cliff edge but at an elevation of 1,500m a cold night is guaranteed ."

Spur-winged Goose (Plectropterus gambensis) is the largest "goose" in the world, though some Cape Barren Geese are similar sized. Larger males can have a 2m wingspan and weigh up to 7kg. You can see they have legs like tree trunks to support the weighty body. They are cousins of both "true geese" and shelducks, but are not really closely related to either. So are in a subfamily by themselves; Plectropterinae, which translates as spur-winged (though a number of other bird species also possess wing spurs eg Jacanas, Southern Lapwing). They are found in sub-Saharan wetlands and are not generally hunted and eaten for a very interesting reason. They often feed on Blister Beetles which produce a substance cantharidin which causes blisters on the skin, and is the same substance in "Spanish Fly" that irritates the urethra causing priapism (before Viagra was invented). Cantharidin is also toxic to humans and can kill, but it is sequestered into the tissues of the goose. This makes the birds taste bad and potentially lethal. This might explain why he allowed me to get close for a photo without flying off.
This is a male but he's only just developing his head spur (a small protuberance on the forehead). But it has glossy green adult body feathers so is not a very young bird. I photographed him on one of the Rift Valley Lakes in Ethiopia.

The pano was merged with Adobe's PhotoMerge utility, while the haze was cleared up a bit with the Adobe's "Camera Raw" dehazing tool.
803 is bringing a couple of cars from Harbison-Walker and is about to cross over the Indiana Tollway and the South Shore mainline. The clear path to the right of 803 was a spur to an industry that was off the original line through East Chicago, also a bridge over the Grand Calumet River is barley visible in the weeds.. July 1980.
We're still in the Pauatahanui Marshes, the cold south-west wind is still gusting strongly across the estuary, and we're still shivering inside the Hide.
This Spur-winged Plover - also known as the Masked Lapwing - had originally been directly out in front of the Hide (See previous Image), but the bird obviously decided it was just too cold on that small spit, so decided to move to another equally small spit... on the extreme right of the Hide's viewing window...!
I'm not sure it was any warmer there for this bird, but it certainly became very difficult to photograph! The camera had to be balanced on the sill of the Hide's viewing slat, the Lens had to be extended out to its max (in spite of what the details recorded to the right suggest), and the strong winds certainly made it difficult to keep the camera perfectly still...!
Whilst it's not the sharpest photo in the stable, be assured: I did try 'doctoring' it prior to posting it, but I wasn't satisfied with the results! So, this is what came SOOC - warts and all...!
Whilst I have captured Plovers once or twice before, this is the first time I've actually managed to get a shot that clearly shows the spur on the bird's left-hand wing...! So that sort of makes up for the not so good quality of the Image... Well that's my excuse anyway, and I'm stickin' to it...!

In early August 1986, a northbound Great Western train passes a new spur just installed at Willow Ranch, California. When Lake County, Oregon bought the Lakeview Branch from Southern Pacific earlier in the year, there were no sidings of any kind between Alturas, California and Lakeview, Oregon. It was a 53-mile stretch of track without so much as a single turnout. A similar spur was later installed to the south at Davis Creek, so maintenance of way equipment could clear the line when needed.
