What a weird day. I spent 23 years having no idea what brussel sprouts looked like on their mother plant, and, in the same day, I saw it in a cooking video and by wandering around. How fantabulous is that?

SN/NC: Andira anthelmi, Andira inermis, Andira surinamensis. Other names: Araroba.—Goa Powder, Fabaceae family
Known as Jamaica cabbage tree, Cabbage tree.
The Andira inermis is a tree of moderate height, with terete, glabrous, ash-colored branches, suberect at their extremities. The leaves are alternate, about 1 foot in length, unequally pinnate; with from five to eight paired leaflets on short, roundish, ferruginous, downy stalks, oblong-lanceolate, rarely ovate-lanceolate, acuminate, for the most part rounded at the base; they are entire, glabrous, thin, with the nerves, scarcely prominent, about 4 ½ inches long and 1 inch broad. The petioles are minutely downy, and the stipules lanceolate, and persistent. The panicles are terminal, axillary, and erect; the branches subdivided, spreading, angular, brownish purple, and covered with ferruginous down. The pedicels are very short, one-flowered, numerous, and crowded. The flowers are reddish-lilac. The fruit is a hard, one-seeded legume about the size of a large plum. Here it is lealving the dry season and started sprouting. Incredible color on the air... Really beautiful.

The inlet for Hanging Lake. The water comes right out of the rock. There is another waterfall behind it, but it's somewhat seasonal. You can see the mist where it's splashing down but it wasn't running strongly enough to show up in the picture.

SIMPLE SPROUTING..DAY 2..WHEAT & BARLEY
We have such a short growing season here that I have decided to start sprouting seeds...it is so simple..and note I didn't even cut the fabric net to a perfect round shape...or take the label off the jar...I wanted to show how easy it is!
On the first day wash the seeds/grains several times (in the jar), fill half full of water and let soak overnite on your counter. Next day wash several times just by filling jar and draining through mesh. Add water again and soak again overnite...3rd day wash again, and this time drain and do not add water....instead lay jar on side in the window, shaking a bit to distribute seeds....rinse and drain each day. In a few days you should have sprouts for salads, sandwiches, omelets and snacks.
Germination is a life force and we can benefit by adding sprouted nuts and seeds into our daily lives. Once sprouted the protein content will increase by as much as 20%, nucliec acids by 30% and many vitamins by as much as 500% ...yes 500%. Pretty amazing!
"Sprout" can refer to several things, primarily a young shoot or bud growing from a plant or the act of growing or developing. It can also refer to edible young shoots from recently germinated seeds, like alfalfa sprouts.

Another shot from a few weeks ago experimenting with lighting on a sprouting onion.
Been busy getting the vegetable seeds started for the year and getting my daily workouts back on track :) and paying excessive fines for not registering the dogs on time again this year! :( grrrr.
Brussel Sprouts anyone?? It really surprised me when I went out to shoot some frost shots and found the Brussel Sprouts still green in January. These are still growing in the garden and yes they still taste good when cooked..
When I watered these cells a few days ago, there was nothing. Now, all my tomatoes and zucchinis have sprouted. This is the beginning of my 2024 veggie garden.
Taken with my "digicam", an Olympus Camedia C-720. The 2-in-1 feature is like using a half-frame camera, maybe inspired by the Olympus EE series?
Most people I know dislike brussels sprouts - which is a shame, as this little green dudes are made of health (not to mention the surprisingly high amount of protein). But bacon? Everybody loves bacon, and anything with bacon tastes great!
The key to brussels sprouts is just not to overcook them - overcooked sprouts are bland, devoid of any nutritional value, and taste of sulphur (think: hell). To be done right, they can be either steamed, or blanched in boiling water for a short time - this way they remain crispy and taste great. And look at this vibrant green - just look at it.
Add some walnuts for extra texture, sprinkle with thyme - and voila. Enjoy your meal. Trust me, it's absolutely delicious.
