We'll be trialling this Mercedes Sprinter 45 demonstrator on our bus routes over the next week or two starting with the 110 & 122 tomorrow.

Honey, I shrunk the bus...

Monday 6th January saw the launch of Route 311 in Bishops Stortford, operated by Arriva Harlow under contract to Hertfordshire County Council.

The route provides a link from the new Stortford Fields housing development (still mostly a building site) to the town centre and railway station, on Monday to Saturday.

The first day of the route saw Sprinter 1010 take the duty, albeit with a paper number in the window and rather a lack of passenger custom.

Seen whilst on loan from Stevenage garage and representing the first of the Arriva fleet of Sprinters to make Harlow, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 45 BF67WGN (1015) is seen passing along Fourth Avenue in Harlow, prior to a left turn to enter the grounds of Princess Alexandra Hospital on Arriva town route 6.

For many years, the minibus ideology was a staple of the British bus scene, being able to get public transport to places either inaccessible to larger buses or financially unjustifiable to serve with them.

More recent times saw the minibus die out, with low-floor accessibility becoming an issue. However with the arrival of DDA accessible models onto the market, the concept of the minibus appears to be under a resurgence.

Among the operators choosing minibuses as the way forward for some routes are EOS London, who have taken on 2 second-hand examples of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 45 for use on Route 87.

New kid on the block which was getting a poor reception from the local bus passengers. The third day of use on town 396 circular route. The highlighted problems are the distance from the curb to the bus because of door design, difficult access for disabled and elderly passengers because of the internal steps and limited room for pushchair and shopping trolleys. The 396 bus route is mainly a shopping bus for Tesco Supermarket and in general it does not fit the passenger profile. Personally I like the bus and I can understand in pure customer numbers it fits the route, however the bus will be mainly used by the aformentioned people and in my mind Arriva have failed to understand their customers needs.
