Today is a fairly gloomy day, I thought of the contrast between most of this week which has been warmer and has brought on a heavy case of spring fever. I think this is by far the earliest the Daffodils have ever bloomed in my yard, but I noticed a few days ago others were blooming as well... hopefully spring is here.
I titled this because I thought about Daffodils as being the first and forerunners of the begining of spring, a contrast of cold and hibernation into color and warmth, even though there are still nights of freeze and frost and days of wind and cold rains and while the rest of nature still lacks proper color - they push forward and give us a promise of things to come.

Gaivota-de-patas-amarelas / Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis atlantis)
Esta é a única gaivota que nidifica nos Açores, estando presente o ano todo. É comum em todo o lado perto da costa e pode ser vista em grandes grupos nos portos, em lixeiras ou aterros e em lagoas das grandes crateras. A população reprodutora está a aumentar, provavelmente devido ao aumento na produção de lixo e na sua disponibilidade. É uma colónia que se reproduz em todas as ilhas (em 2004 contaram-se 4249 pares), com as maiores colónias localizadas no ilhéu do Topo em São Jorge e na Lagoa do Fogo em São Miguel.
As Gaivotas-de-patas-amarelas que nidificam nos Açores são da raça local atlantis, que difere da continental michahellis em muitos aspectos. As aves adultas têm as partes superiores cor cinzento-escuro semelhante à raça graellsii da Gaivota-d’asa-escura. As aves invernais apresentam uma cabeça com pontos escuros que cria uma aparência de terem um capuz mais parecido com as raças da Gaivota-prateada smithonianus ou argentatus do que a michahellis. Os juvenis também são muito escuros, sendo muitas vezes mais parecidos com smithsonianus do que michahellis. No inverno há um número menor de outras gaivotas grandes que visitam os Açores e, de entre estas, existem normalmente algumas Larus michahellis michahellis do continente.
