Winter has transformed Spouting Rock into a "Winter Wonder".

Kennebunkport, ME View from the hill near Ocean Ave and Spouting Rock

Last year for Thanksgiving we took a few days of R & R in Glenwood. We hiked to Hanging Lake(see previous posts) and up above to Spouting Rock. The water comes out holes in the limestone cliff wall. It's a great place to cool off in the summer. This is one area of Colorado that is being loved to death, and there will be a permit system implemented in 2019 that will help ease some of the pressure of this delicate area.

This is a place called Spouting Rock at the end of the Hanging Lake trail near Glenwood Springs, CO. The water from this falls came spouting right out of the middle of this cliff. Very cool. Clickable pic in comments with Jean and me for scale.

Perched a hundred feet above Hanging Lake in Colorado's Glenwood Canyon, Spouting Rock falls features three separate falls, one above the other in a unique configuration.

Spouting Rock is a very short spur off the end of the Hanging Lake trail in White River National Forest, and is definitely worth doing! You can go behind the waterfall shown in this picture. I would imagine this is very interesting in the spring, when the water flow would be stronger.

One exposure, tonemapped in Nik HDR Efex Pro plugin for Lightroom, then warmed up a bit using Nik's Color Efex Pro plugin. The Sun was peeking through the trees, so I thought it would be interesting. It caused some artifacts, but I didn't mind.

About 10 miles east of Glenwood Springs, CO, is a popular hike that goes to Hanging Lake. The hike is short but fairly steep. My wife and I went with some friends on a Saturday and it was like a traffic jam the whole way up. I knew it would be busy with people but didn't expect it to be that busy. I went back the next morning and started hiking just before daylight. I was the only one there for about an hour and enjoyed taking a number of photos. Spouting Rock which is pictured here is just above Hanging Lake.

I'd be surprised if there's a more popular trail in Colorado than the one to Hanging lake and Spouting Rock, about a thousand feet above the Colorado River in Glenwood Canyon.

While mobbed in the summer, far fewer people go up there in the winter, even a very mild winter such as this one.

This image is created from thirty separate images stitched together. Not sure what lens might be wide enough to capture the scene in a single shot.

Water flows from the rock, then runs downhill a few hundred feet and into the Hanging Lake waterfall. From the lake it flows another mile and a half and drops about 1,500 feet before reaching the Colorado river.

Day 2 of our weekend getaway in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. The big activity this day was to rent bikes, have the rental company drop us off 14 miles upstream on the Colorado River, ride back toward town but stopping at mile 3 to hike up to Hanging Lake and Spouting Rock waterfall).

Behind the waterfall moments after we had solemnized our marriage, that is, we'd just performed our own ceremony. Additional photos in comment. (# 1 in road trip series)

A hike that was 1.2 miles over a completely unpaved trail with rocks the size of beach balls, oh and I forgot, over that 1.2 mile hike there was 1,000 foot elevation rise, oh and add 25lbs of camera gear too. Worth every moment.

Yes, I named this image after the song from Hercules (Disney). I felt that it was suitable for an image of a waterfall that I had to complete a difficult hike to get to.

Everyone who has hiked Hanging Lake knows that it’s a challenge, especially at the end when you’re facing the rocky cliffside. What a lot of people don’t realize (or don’t care to see, I’m not sure) is that the Spouting Rock waterfalls are above Hanging Lake. Yeah, it’s more distance to hike, but it was well worth it!

Hanging Lake is reached via a trailhead located near I-70 in the bottom of the canyon. The trail follows Dead Horse Creek, a tributary of the Colorado River and ascends some 1,000 feet.

The trail head to Spouting Rock is at the top of the Hanging Lake trail, just before entering the view of the lake.
