Split is the second largest city in Croatia. About 211.000 people lived there in 2012. The city is the biggest and most important one in Dalmatia. It is often called capital of Dalmatia. About 400.000 people live in the metropolitan region. Split is located at the Adriatic Sea. Its port ofters year-round connections to most islands of Dalmatia. There is an important shipyard in Split. Other sources of income are tourism, fishery, paper mills, cement works and some chemical industry.
With a population of just over 200,000, Split is Croatia's second largest city and the most important city on the Dalmatian coast. Originally founded by Greek settlers, it rose to prominence under the Roman emperor Diocletian (a local boy made good); he built his retirement home here in 305 AD - a gigantic palace compound, covering an area of 38,000 square metres and able to accommodate up to 10,000 people! It is still largely intact. WIthin its walls are numerous cafes, restaurants and shops, as well as signficant monuments (Diocletian's Palace is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site). This photograph shows the Peristyle at the very core of the palace. On the left is the 7th century Cathedral of St Domnius, the main body of which was built by Diocletian as his mausoleum.

Several decades ago, the residents of Caye Caulker cut a channel dividing the north and south halves of the island. Then Hurricane Hatti enlarged that channel. That channel is today called The Split. Most people live on the south island of Caye Caulker, and that's where most of the touristy stuff is, including this bar, The Lazy Lizard. The bar itself is just to the left of the frame, just behind the diving board.
