Cotton: The yarn. The control of quality, my father's main concern. Time has passed, and my memories faded. I only remember my father's joy during the visits he made to his clients'mills where he shared his knowledge and skills with the workers he was training. I regularly went with him on my Summer holidays to get acquainted with the mills and help him with English and German language translation.

There actually is a Spindle City … it’s the nickname of Cohoes, N.Y., where massive textile mills harnessed the power of the Mohawk River at the site of a major waterfall. Those mills were spinning cotton, though, not silk, which was the business of this place in Maryland.
Luckily this tree at Westonbirt Arboretum was labelled and I took a shot of the label too. It's indigenous to Japan, China and Korea. I have never seen anything like it and the raindrops on it really brought it alive for me.
Caused by the maple spindle gall mite, Vasates aceriscrumena. They don't usually harm the tree.
Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.
We live in apple country and it has been interesting to see the orchards slowly transform over the past few years to this new system of growing the trees. The Tall Spindle System is a combination of denser spacing between trees, dwarfing rootstock, minimal pruning at planting, branches tied down to induce fruiting and trellis support as the tree grows taller. It is supposed to give higher early and mature yields and be easier to harvest.
Sneak peak, what do you think? (Base fabric is by Lara Cameron of Ink & Spindle in Melbourne, it's called Rooftops and is printed on an organic cotton and hemp fabric. It was just screaming at me to add some color.) : ) THANK YOU to the Flickr folks for adding this to EXPLORE!

'GOLDEN SPINDLES OR NOT GOLDEN SPINDLES, THAT IS THE QUESTION.' (1)
I was informed at the time these were Golden Spindles, despite lacking pointed tips. Since they were mature fruiting bodies, perhaps that's the reason they looked as they did ?
Any views on this welcomed.
They did however demonstrate very clearly, characteristic flattened bodies, longitudinal grooves and some had reddish-brown tips.
Golden Spindles are good indicators of unimproved grassland, feeding on decaying organic matter in the soil. These are the grassland habitats that Waxcaps favour, and there were certainly an abundance of those found in the area that day.
The landmark of the old mining village with interesting spindle-shaped urbanism is the Lutheran Church located on a low hill at the upper end of the village called Koceľovce. The church is an almost intactly preserved Gothic building from the first half of the 14th century, originally dedicated to St. Bartholomew.
The single-nave space with a polygonal chancel, a sacristy on the north side and a high tower on a square plan in the west, which turns into an octogon on the upper floors, is covered by a high gabled roof with shingles. The roofing of the tower, with an atypical metal Art Nouveau helmet, dates from the beginning of the 20th century. The nave is vaulted with classicist Theresian vaults instead of the original beamed ceiling, which is stylishly followed by an equally vaulted brick porch. During the last third of the 14th century, the polygonal chancel was built and vaulted with a cross rib vault. The stylistic purity of the church is emphasized by high windows divided by profiled bars and tracery and a system of supporting pillars of the chancel. The current southern entrance to the church was opened during the restoration in the 2nd half of the 18th century, it is closed by a Gothic door with decorative fittings, which were transferred here from the original entrance portal in the tower. Another Gothic door with rich wrought iron decoration is in the portal to the sacristy. This interesting wrought iron door also became the logo of the church.
