My old, lightweight Manfrotto tripod is over 30 years old and has always served me well. It was there in Africa, accompanied me to Scandinavia and the south of Europe. It was almost like a good buddy. But for the new cameras it is simply too small and not stable enough. So a new one was needed. 😀 - The first photos with it turned out only little different than with the old one 😆. But handling it is more fun!

Typical weather in Switzerland in spring. The sky is constantly overcast, it rains or snows. Often there is fog. I drove to Lake Lucerne on a Sunday morning in February because the sun was forecast to break through in the course of the morning. There were no breakthroughs - but a very fine pink before sunrise... for a few minutes.

First try with my new Shen Hao filmback. The filmback works on my "Graflex Speed Graphic" and allows recordings in the format 6cm x 17cm. I'm quite happy with the recording. However, you can see that the lens from the 1960s has trouble with edge sharpness. The circle of light is large enough, but the focus is only up to 12cm. Well, I guess I'll have to look for another lens!

First attempt at color with the Shen Hao filmback.
I reached Lake Lungern on its north side after an hour's drive. I looked for a nice place for the first shot. The lake lay dark before me. I was hoping for a sunrise with colored lights on the mountains. A thin band of fog was forming on the southern mountain walls. Now the tension increased. Would the fog still be there when the sun reached it?... I waited and waited and cursed myself for forgetting my gloves again... Then the sun came. The fog grew bigger and bigger and began to glow beautifully.

After days of bad weather, the first small irises are in the garden. I wanted to see if 6x17 would do the job too. Had to crop it a bit...

A beautiful morning at the lake. There was a young man, who stood into the water to get a nice picture - i stayed at land.
I love the pink in the cloud.

Lenz is an old German word for spring. The Lenzburg is the "spring castle". A nice name, I think - for a really impressive castle complex. According to legend, a terrible dragon resided in the region. The peasants lived in fear and terror until two daring knights finished off the beast...I can't help but think from these stories that slaughtering a miraculous creature was hardly an honorable thing...anyway, a castle was built at this point.
Actually, nice weather was announced - but when I reached the castle, the sky was overcast. As the sun rose, it illuminated the castle beautifully.

I'm still playing around with the new 6x17 filmback. Unfortunately, the sun doesn't shine - and then there aren't really any great shots in the garden. But I don't feel like waiting...
The picture is cropped to about 6x12.

Just before sunrise on Meols beach, Wirral.
Most of the beach is gloopy mud rather than sand and I've previously taken plastic bags to lay my bag on, or take less gear and use the messenger bag. I bought one of these and it's much better, rolls up small and is fairly lightweight. If you spend time on muddy beaches it's worth a look.

I have slightly less than 2 boxes of this wonderful film. I wish I had many more, but I guess all the more to savor it.
I ventured out yesterday to do some large format photos on the Allouette River. With the sun starting to rise and peeking around the bend, mist can be seen rising off the water. It’s hard to appreciate the detail from the huge large format negative on a tiny screen. Click on the image to open full screen size.

Wrong tide, wrong time of day but an enjoyable first visit of the year to Meols last week.
The main dinghy is 'Valkyrie' with many peoples favourite, 'Misty Blue' in the background.
If you spend any time on beaches then these mats are invaluable and are perfect for Meols which is more mud than sand.
