The basic trouble is perhaps that they are still very immature in the spiritual life, because they are very centered on a “self” for which they want to attain the best of ends: they want to possess “contemplation” and “God.” But to think contemplation is something that one can “attain” and “possess” is just to get off on the wrong road from the very beginning. What they really need . . . is the kind of really basic sort of training that the Desert Fathers and the early monasteries gave: to shut up and stop all their speculation and get down to living a simple laborious life in which they forget themselves. My theory, based on pure speculation, is that Coopers Hawk hatchlings in our township grow up in the same trees that squirrels nest in and they do not recognize them as prey, but as neighbors😄. Seriously, though, in our backyard for three years now, we have seen young hawks and squirrels seeming to coexist. An adult Coopers took a chipmunk last year, but I have yet to see one go after a squirrel.

Swamps, even the very thought of them, often evoke primitive fear and give rise to legends and speculation among people. They really contain a lot of amazing things - incredible space, immersed in ringing silence, colorful moss cover, proud lonely pines and rare almost transparent dwarf birches. This is a world where sky and earth are inseparable, where the same clouds and the same sun are visible in the swamp mirrors on the bizarrely shaped surface of the water. I stopped at this lake, whose bulge shape attracted me, to drink coffee, and at that moment it started to rain again. I had to take a raincoat out of my backpack instead of a thermos, somewhere inside I was irritated: I was unlucky with the dawn, the weather had some objections to shooting, and I couldn’t even drink coffee when I wanted! It was with these thoughts that I rustled my raincoat irritably until I heard a strange sound that completely absorbed my attention, and I won’t even try to describe it. I stood and was afraid to move, so as not to miss this sound, which either intensified or almost disappeared. It was the rain that sang and its microphone was the thinnest ice on this lake. When the rain stopped, I felt ashamed of my irritation.

After months of removing drift and fighting different Ohio River levels, the Skipper's River Cafe is offshore and opened for business. Getting the barges moved to their seasonal location created a lot of speculation. New Richmond is ready for it's boating season.

Lanificio Rossi was the largest Italian wool company at the beginning of the twentieth century, with numerous factories in the Vicenza area. This factory was built for a capacity of 12,000 spindles in 1869. Despite this, due to wrong management choices and financial speculation, the Lanerossi group experienced a period of crisis after the mid-nineteenth century. In 1987 the company was taken over by its competitor Marzotto from nearby Valdagno, who, however, no longer invested in the Lanerossi brand. The various plants were gradually dismantled.

Although classified as poisonous, reports of human deaths resulting from its ingestion are extremely rare. After parboiling—which weakens its toxicity and breaks down the mushroom's psychoactive substances—it is eaten in parts of Europe, Asia, and North America. Amanita muscaria is noted for its hallucinogenic properties, with its main psychoactive constituent being the compound muscimol. The mushroom was used as an intoxicant and entheogen by the peoples of Siberia, and has a religious significance in these cultures. There has been much speculation on possible traditional use of this mushroom as an intoxicant in other places such as the Middle East, Eurasia, North America, and Scandinavia.

A single P42 leads P029 west on the left-hand main at Gaithersburg. After a few months of speculation, the Chargers finally made their debut on the point of one of the Capitol trainsets a few days prior to this. While P42s should remain the norm south of Washington for a while, I was glad for a chance for one more shot of a P42 on the Met (which feels weird to say).

Hindleberg ist the easternmost mountain is Austria, geologicaly it belongs to the Carpathian Mountain chain. A lookout tower - Königswarte - (publicly accessible) and a listening station are built on its top. There is much speculation about the listening-station and theories that it is financed in part by the NSA. Not so kosher for a neutral country like Austria, who knows...

Tamon (多聞) is usually translated to "hall turret." Fujimi-tamon is built on the stonewall of Hasuike-bori moat that protects the Honmaru compound of Edo Castle. Behind Fijimi-tamon, there used to be Honmaru Goten (本丸御殿 Main Palace), now a large lawn-covered space in Imperial Palace East Garden flic.kr/p/2qWuHsj.

There used to be 26 Tamon in Edo Castle but this one and those attached to Fushimi-yagura at Nijuubashi seem to be the only survivors.

This section of the stonewall protrudes from other sections so that it would facilitate sniping enemies trying to climb the stonewalls.

Hasuike-bori (蓮池濠) is almost filled with siltation. Hasuike means lotus pond, but it looks rather a silver grass pond.

Imperial Household Agency may have filled the Hasuike-bori at the base of Fujimi-yagura to make a pathway to connect between Honmaru and Nishinomaru, and the separated southern half of the moat came to be called Hamaguri-bori. It is my speculation based on that the demolished turret facing Hamaguri-bori was called Hasuike Tatsumi-yagura (蓮池巽櫓 flic.kr/p/2qVBjkG).

Hasuike-bori makes the boundary between Honmaru and Nishinomaru compounds. This photo was taken from the Inui street on the Nishinomaru side.

Victoria Street in Edinburgh Old Town is one of the most photographed locations in the city. Its gentle curve and colourful shopfronts make it a favourite spot for tourist photos, postcards and TV adverts.

Victoria Street was built between 1829-34 as part of a series of improvements to the Old Town, to improve access around the city. On the north side of the street, a terrace was built, with a series of arches underneath which were later filled with shops. Today, the street is a charming corner of the Old Town, but recent speculation suggests that a relic of its darker past may still exist. This was the location of Major Weir’s house, a man notorious as ‘the Wizard of the West Bow’, who was executed for witchcraft in 1670. It was thought that his house was completely demolished when Victoria Street was built, but it now seems that some parts may still exist, hidden in the Quaker Meeting House on the upper terrace. An intriguing thought for those visiting to shop, dine or looking for the unexpected.

The church of Saint Dunat, located near the village of Kornić on the island of Krk, is believed to date from the 12th century, although there are speculations that it was built earlier. The church was heavily damaged in an explosion in 1945, after which it was reconstructed.

This winter, I have frequently seen Pronghorn - Antilocapra americana, often referred to as antelope - near the turnoff to Grasslands Park, feeding on spilled grain in the wheat fields. This is an early morning shot. There were about 75 in sight that day in a large, scattered herd.

Known to be the second fastest runners in the animal kingdom, just behind the cheetah, pronghorn have been clocked at 55-60 mph, and can maintain a steady, 30 mph pace for many km. No North American predator can catch them, which leads to speculation that they evolved to be able to outrun a now extinct predator.

Look at their blocky bodies and rather spindly legs. Born to run, they have extra-large lungs and heart for oxygen intake and rapid pumping of blood. To see a herd or even a few individuals shift into high gear on the run is simply breathtaking; they flow like water over the land, running effortlessly. These five are merely trotting. Late winter, dawn sky.

Herrmann Julius Meyer provided the association with two million marks in start-up capital for the construction of affordable housing. In 1900, it was converted into the Meyer'sche Häuser Stiftung (Meyer Housing Foundation), which still manages the housing estates today and continued to exist in the GDR, even though the allocation of housing there was regulated centrally by the state. The second estate (see picture) was built between 1899 and 1901 in Leipzig as a closed block with corner towers and baroque domes. It was designed by Leipzig architect and master builder Max Pommer, who was chairman of the association's board, at a time of rapid population growth when speculation, rent gouging and cramped, unhygienic living conditions hit workers particularly hard. In 2025, the foundation will celebrate its 125th anniversary.

An old barn now used for storage sits amongst drought ridden and dusty fields.

The harvest has been gathered in but apparently is of poor quality this year. There is a possibility of thunder storms next week but there is a lot of speculation about that if indeed that happens at all, the drought could go on into next year unless we get serious rain. Currently 29c.

Kachidoki and Harumi are reclaimed lands constructed in the late 19th century just after Tsukishima. These old reclaimed lands had been used mostly for factories and warehouses.

In the 1990s and onward, Japanese corporations moved their factories to Southeast Asia and China, which resulted in the conversion of former industrial areas for the residential purpose. It is another reason for the mushrooming of high-rise condos in the Tokyo Bayside.

The price hike of real estates and the construction boom of high-rise condos are observed not only in Tokyo but also in other major cities in Asia. It is supposed that they are spurred by foreign investments and speculation.

The Ring of Brodgar is a Neolithic stone circle on the Mainland of the Orkney Isles, Scotland. There is still speculation about the actual age of the Ring but It is generally thought to have been erected between 2500 BC and 2000 BC

The Ring of stones stands on a small strip of land between two lochs, the Loch of Harray (which is freshwater) and Sternness (which is saltwater) and is some 104 metres in diameter.

This stone ring is not alone in Orkney. Within a 2 miles radius from Brodgar there are two circle-henges, four chambered tombs, groups of standing stones, single stones, barrows, cairns, and mounds.

The exact purpose is of the Ring is not known, but its proximity to the Standing Stones of Stenness and the Maeshowe tomb make the Ring of Brodgar a site of major importance.

A Green Bay Western RS-2 is the center of attention as it glides through a quaint neighborhood in Winona, Minnesota. While the original slide mount does not list the photographer's name, speculation suggests this is a John F. Bjorklund original.

This was a scheduled excursion when it appeared Burlington Northern would purchase the GB&W. It was led by two RS-2s locomotives, and they loaded in Winona on Wall Street.

Many thanks to Andrew Nelson for providing details about the special run.

This is a re edit of a photo previously uploaded looking eastwards across the Trent Valley in Nottinghamshire, with Sturton Le Steeple church forming the focal point. It results from idle speculation on my part about how good the cable removal tool is in Photoshop. Pretty good as it happens! All the overhead pylons and cables have gone. I'm in two minds about its use....am I taking a photograph or creating an image? But then as soon as you start shooting in RAW, exposing for highlights and then playing with the sliders in Lightroom you start to put your own spin on a photo. Interesting to see how it fares in comparison to the original.

Our universe is huge, and it looks like we might have more of these huge things, a lot universes. One universe will be not logical.

A line, in mathematics, going trough the space is straight and infinitely long according a definition.

Speculation:

A line extends beyond our universe. How far it goes and how many universes will be when we count them along the way of a line are very mysterious. Not just in one way, we have to count both ways of a line. Light rays bend in space. If a line bends in space like light rays when it goes between universes, galaxies and black holes, we will have a curved line. If the bending is too much that we might have a circle out of a line. There is a high probability that each line will not have the same fate.

Is it really important for us to know what is going on up there while we are very busy with our fight for survival? Yes, it can remind us that we are not in a small box.

The Hvítá river flows southward and, about a kilometer above the falls, it turns sharply to the right and flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages. The crevice, about 20 meters wide and 2.5 kilometers in length, extends perpendicular to the flow of the river. The average amount of water running down the waterfall is 141 cubic metres (5,000 cu ft) per second in the summer and 80 cubic metres (2,800 cu ft) per second in the winter. The highest flood measured was 2,000 cubic metres (71,000 cu ft) per second.

During the first half of the 20th century and some years into the late 20th century, there was much speculation about using Gullfoss to generate electricity. During this period, the waterfall was rented indirectly by its owners, Tómas Tómasson and Halldór Halldórsson, to foreign investors. However, the investors' attempts were unsuccessful, partly due to lack of money. The waterfall was later sold to the state of Iceland, and is now protected.

Dreams are successions of images, ideas, emotions, and sensations that occur usually involuntarily in the mind during certain stages of sleep. The content and purpose of dreams are not definitively understood, though they have been a topic of scientific speculation, as well as a subject of philosophical and religious interest, throughout recorded history. The scientific study of dreams is called oneirology.

As viewed from the iconic Empire State Building’s 86th floor observatory the equally iconic triangular shape of the Flatiron building at the intersections of Fifth Avenue and Broadway. When this building was built in 1902 by the George A. Fuller Company of Chicago designed by Chicago's Daniel Burnham it was officially tagged as the Fuller Building but its name was changed to Flatiron reflecting its shape and the name of the area which went by Flat Iron prior to its construction. This significant intersection marked the northern terminus of what was referred to as ‘Ladies’ Mile’ which was at the turn of the 19th Century among the most important and prominent shopping districts in Manhattan, thus why the Fuller Company chose its location. A 21 story steel frame skyscraper with white terra-cotta cladding, it has been dwarfed by neighbors the New York Life Tower and the MetLife Tower but its unique shape, it’s primo location have made it one of New York City’s most beloved and photographed icons and the neighborhood where it resides now is known as the Flatiron District.

Believe it or not, when it was finished, there was an observation deck about the perimeter of the roof that can be seen in this image which was closed as other buildings soon surpassed the building’s 21 story height. So there was a lot speculation when the building was completed that it’s narrow design and extreme (for the time) height would make the building unable to withstand strong winds. The building was mocked and given the name Burnham’s Folly after architect Daniel Burnham. Time has vindicated Mr. Burnham’s design as it has withstood and prevailed. The shape of the building does have an effect of wind currents, specifically creating a downdraft by the downdraught effect which essentially causes the wind to increase as it reaches the base of the Flatiron. Much to delight of young gents when the building first opened, the wind gusts often lifted ladies skirts exposing their ankles (let’s remember we’re talking 1902).

Chester Rows are a set of structures in each of the four main streets of Chester, in the United Kingdom, consisting of a series of covered walkways on the first floor behind which are entrances to shops and other premises.

At street level is another set of shops and other premises, many of which are entered by going down a few steps.

Dating from the medieval era, the Rows may have been built on top of rubble remaining from the ruins of Roman buildings, but their origin is still subject to speculation

Photographs, which cannot themselves explain anything, are inexhaustible invitations to deduction, speculation, and fantasy... The very muteness of what is, hypothetically, comprehensible in photographs is what constitutes their attraction and provocativeness :-)

I had several versions of this gentleman, using different dof's, and actually went back and forth as to which one to upload. I finally settled on this one, because of the intensity drawn to the one eye by the shallow dof. Somehow, his worry or thought, or whatever process is going on inside him intensified ten-fold this way.

The okapi /oʊˈkɑːpiː/, Okapia johnstoni, is a giraffid artiodactyl mammal native to the Ituri Rainforest, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in Central Africa. Although the okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of zebras, it is most closely related to the giraffe.

The animal was brought to prominent European attention by speculation on its existence found in popular press reports covering Henry Morton Stanley's journeys in 1887. Remains of a carcass were later sent to London by the English adventurer and colonial administrator Harry Johnston and became a media event in 1901.Today, about 10,000–20,000 remain in the wild and as of 2011, 42 different institutions display them worldwide.

Okapis have reddish dark backs, with striking horizontal white stripes on the front and back legs, making them resemble zebras from a distance. These markings possibly help young follow their mothers through the dense rain forest and may also serve as camouflage.

The body shape is similar to that of the giraffe, except okapis have much shorter necks. Like the giraffe, the okapi has long legs and a robust body. Both species have very long (about 35-cm), flexible tongues used to strip leaves and buds from trees.

The okapi's tongue is also long enough for the animal to wash its eyelids and clean its ears (inside and out). This sticky tongue is pointed and bluish-grey in colour like that of the giraffe. Male okapis have short, skin-covered horns called ossicones. Their large ears help them detect their predator, the leopard.

Okapis are 1.9 to 2.5 m (6.2 to 8.2 ft) long (from the head to the base of the tail) and stand 1.5 to 2.0 m (4.9 to 6.6 ft) high at the shoulder. They have 30- to 42-cm-long tails. Their weight ranges from 200 to 350 kg (440 to 770 lb).

The beautiful door of St Edward's Parish Church in Stow-on-the-Wold, flanked by two Yew trees. There is some speculation that this was Tolkien's inspiration for his illustration of the west gate of Moria, in his novel, The Lord of the Rings

Low-rise housing from another time in the shadow of a volume that seeks no relationship. The existing fabric reduced to backdrop. Rules lose force where authority begins.

Encounter on site:

While photographing this scene, someone called out to ask what I was doing. I told him I was fascinated by the contrast between the oversized new volume and the older structure beside it.

He replied that it made him uncomfortable. Introducing himself as the owner, he took a photo of me in return and asked whether I was shooting this “for a lawyer.”

I reassured him that there was no need to worry — that this was an artistic project. Judging from his gestures, he took that as irony.

The moment stayed with me. It revealed something beyond architecture: a tension embedded in the site itself. When a building feels controversial enough that documentation is suspected to be legal evidence, it suggests that construction here is not merely about housing, but about contested decisions, scale, and authority. Built on fragile ground.

This is the first young Warbler that I've seen in the reserve for the winter season. The number of Warblers in the reserve has been way down since the Hurricanes Ian and Nicole. Those Hurricanes occurred during the start of the migration, and I think that they went to a different area in the south. This would have resulted on the babies being imprinted on a different location, and therefore, they would migrate to this new location. This is just speculation on my part, but I think it's reasonable.

The Home of Jenny Greenteeth,

The Pool has a "sinister reputation", with rumours that the pool is "bottomless".

If that isn't haunting enough, a strange story linked to Doxey Pool and Blakemere Pool continues to cause intrigue.

It is claimed that both pools are home to an evil mermaid called Jenny Greenteeth, with a possible sighting of the "blue nymph" way back in 1949.

Florence Pettitt said she saw a weird creature emerge from the pool just before she was due to take her morning swim.

.

It may have been a figlment of Miss Pettitt's imagination, but the speculation and rumours has created a chilling atmosphere in the area.

It is a peaceful location in the wilderness of the Peaks but its quiet, isolated location does make you wonder if there really is something lurking in the waters

This tiny structure sits on the grounds of a local community center where I grew up in Maryland.

Lots of great memories of summer camp attended and softball games cheered for here.

There's much speculation as to whether this was an old schoolhouse back in the day or perhaps the only remaining out building from the farm that once occupied this land.

Irregardless...I've always loved imagining what purpose it may have served all those years ago. 13 years after moving away from home...I was happy to see this little building still standing!

Good stuff :)

Following up to yesterday's post, figured why not a shot of the other EMD repowered Baldwin? The sister unit to 7902 was the 7903 seen here, and it actually made it into the black NW image. This shot is from my collection and unfortunately I don't know who shot this as it wasn't noted. But being at Chardon Road yard, I'm fairly sure it was taken by either Dave McKay or Al Clum, based my best speculation.

United Kingdom, Wiltshire, Stonehenge

No place has generated so much speculation and wild theories as the standing stones of Stonehenge. After driving for miles through the rolling hills and plains of the English countryside the sight of this unusual structure makes people gasp. A walk around it only provokes more strange feelings. There's a sense that this is something very important. It taunts us with it's mystery. For over 5000 years it has stood silent vigil over the earth. It has been excavated, x-rayed, measured, and surveyed. Yet despite all that has been learned about its age and construction, its purpose still remains one of the great mysteries of the world.
