Meyer’sche Häuser Housing Estate
Herrmann Julius Meyer provided the association with two million marks in start-up capital for the construction of affordable housing. In 1900, it was converted into the Meyer'sche Häuser Stiftung (Meyer Housing Foundation), which still manages the housing estates today and continued to exist in the GDR, even though the allocation of housing there was regulated centrally by the state. The second estate (see picture) was built between 1899 and 1901 in Leipzig as a closed block with corner towers and baroque domes. It was designed by Leipzig architect and master builder Max Pommer, who was chairman of the association's board, at a time of rapid population growth when speculation, rent gouging and cramped, unhygienic living conditions hit workers particularly hard. In 2025, the foundation will celebrate its 125th anniversary.
