Shoreham Sculpture Trail
with The London Group
and Friends. A weekend of site specific art by over 70 artists spread around the village of Shoreham, Kent.
One of the largest sculptire trails the UK has ever seen. Featuring 30 London Group members and invited artists, including many prominent UK sculptors. 76 artists will be exhibiting over 200 sculptures in 26 gardens. The astonishing diversity of the exhibits ranges from the monumental to the ephemeral with works in metal and stone, with interactive work and performance and the Trail will be particularly unusual in the number of site-specific works. The idyllic village of Shoreham Kent, a gem just on the edge of London, is a beautiful place to visit just for itself and in June the gardens of all sizes, many on the river, will be at their best - visitors couldn't wish for more perfect surroundings in which to view sculpture. Most artists will be present to meet visitors during the trail and many will be giving talks. The Trail is curated by London Group President Susan Haire.

We constructed a white cube out of materials found on the site in order to project the images of the performance taking place inside this structure as an invitation to the participants to enter the structure. Inside was a machine where photo-transfers of the paper factory were placed. We activated various part of the machine that painted the photographs, metaphorically draining paint from the veins of one of the artist hanged outside the cube.

This time, each note contributes to the picture based on how specific it is; the less of the picture it takes up, the greater a wieght it gets.

Sumacs can be trees and shrubs. They grow in subtropical regions such as Africa and North America. The leaves are pinnate and grow alternately on the branches. The flowers are dense clusters of drupes. They can be dried and pulverized to create a purple spice often used in Mediterranean food. The flowers can also be dried and added to tobacco to smoke. The leaves can be used to dye clothes or tan leather.

"1236 Eagle" is the designation for a specific glass product design made in Newark, Ohio by the Heisey Glass Company (1896 to 1957). Heisey glass designs are called "patterns". Pattern designations include a number (not necessarily consecutively numbered during the history of the glass factory) and a name. Some pattern names were given by the Heisey company, while others were given by Heisey glass researchers.
"Moongleam" refers to a type of colored glass that Heisey produced - in this case, light green.
The source of silica for Heisey glass is apparently undocumented, but was possibly a sandstone deposit in the Glassrock area (Glenford & Chalfants area) of Perry County, Ohio (if anyone can provide verfication of this, please inform me). Quarries in the area targeted the Pennsylvanian-aged Massillon Sandstone (Pottsville Group) and processed it into glass sand suitable for glass making.

Augustus H. Heisey (1842-1922) emigrated from Germany with his family in 1843. They settled in Merrittown, Pennsylvania and after graduation from the Merrittown Academy, he worked for a short time in the printing business.
In 1861, he began his life-long career in the glass industry by taking a job as a clerk with the King Glass Company of Pittsburgh. After a stint in the Union Army, Heisey joined the Ripley Glass Company as a salesman. It was there that he earned his reputation of "the best glass salesman on the road".
In 1870, Heisey married Susan Duncan, daughter of George Duncan, then part-owner of the Ripley Company and later full owner, at which time he changed its name to George Duncan & Sons. A year later, he deeded a quarter interest to each of his two children. A few years after his death, A.H. Heisey and James Duncan became sole owners. In 1891, the company joined the U.S. Glass Company to escape its financial difficulties. Heisey was the commercial manager.
Heisey began to formulate plans for his own glass company in 1893. He chose Newark, Ohio because there was an abundance of natural gas nearby and, due to the efforts of the Newark Board of Trade, there was plenty of low cost labor available. Construction of the factory at 301 Oakwood Avenue began in 1895 and it opened in April of 1896 with one sixteen-pot furnace. In its heyday, the factory had three furnaces and employed nearly seven hundred people. There was a great demand for the fine glass and Heisey sold it all over the world.
The production in the early years was confined to pressed ware, in the style of imitation cut glass. The company also dealt extensively with hotel barware. By the late 1890s, Heisey revived the colonial patterns with flutes, scallops, and panels which had been so popular decades earlier. These were so well accepted that from that time on, at least one colonial line was made continuously until the factory closed.
A.H. Heisey's name appears on many different design patents including some when he was with George Duncan & Sons. Heisey patterns that he was named the designer include 1225 Plain Band, 305 Punty and Diamond Point, and 1776 Kalonyal.
Other innovations instituted by A.H. Heisey were the pioneering in advertising glassware in magazines nationally, starting as early as 1910 and the first glass company to make fancy pressed stems. That idea caught on quickly and most hand-wrought stemware is made in this manner, even now.

The plane wing represents my times traveling. This specific photo was taken last summer on my way from Ontario. It represents perspective. The railroad tracks are those not far from my house. It is inspiring to see where tracks can take you. This photo represents repetition and balance.
The sunrise was taken at Parksville Beach. Since it was my common place to go, I thought it only makes sense to use it to represent myself. This photo also represents line.
Parker (my horse) was posing nicely for this photo. It represents contrast. The center photo of me was taken on Mt. Washington. It has an ongoing view from where I was standing. It represents unity.
The chess peices represent the game of life and also use the element of proportion. The image of the sunset on the haybale represents value. Niagara Falls, I took this photo last summer. I go to the falls every year and I just find it so awe-inspiring. It represents colour because of the rainbow in the photo. The bottom corner is my dear doggie. She is my little dog and I love her with all my heart. She represents a lot of different things to me but one of them is texture... and love of course.

My route on this specific trip to NorCal went through Modesto, and I knew there was one Raley's that still sported very classic 80's decor that I needed to go check out before it was gone.
This Raleys opened in 1976. While I'm not too sure about this stores specific history, I do know around the mid-1980's, this store was given a remodel into it's current decor, and also saw an expansion to the right into a previous store space, which can be seen with a large wall with two openings into the expansion space in both the front and back aisles, which separates the main store with the expansion.
The early 2000's did see its front facade updated as part of a shopping center renovation. Some SKU's were moved around during this time to put in an expanded liquor and wine department, which was also updated with new wood flooring and new shelving with the tile endcaps of shelving found in new-build and other remodeled Ralphs around this time. The rest of the store remains untouched from the 80's remodel to this day.
While it has kept this look for this long, I do anticipate at one point, they will either remodel or close, however, I try to remain optimistic that perhaps Raleys intentionally keeps this store with this look in order to have a physical time capsule of 1980's store design.

In 1977, when he received a commission to create a large, site-specific sculpture for Baltimore’s Inner Harbor, Mark di Suvero was considered one of the nation’s leading sculptors. Baltimore had applied for and was awarded a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts based solely on the location at the harbor’s edge between the World Trade Center and the National Aquarium. Di Suvero was chosen soon thereafter, and the NEA grant was confirmed. The sculpture was dedicated in May 1980 by Mrs. Joan Mondale, the wife of Vice President Walter Mondale and a passionate supporter of the arts, with Mark di Suvero’s participation.
All the early designs for di Suvero’s Baltimore piece, as well as the model of the piece, involved movement. The sixteen early designs on deposit at the Baltimore Museum of Art do not document how Under Sky/One Family developed into a stationary piece.
The title of the piece was taken from a Chinese saying di Suvero remembered from his childhood, but it also makes reference to Martin Luther King’s belief in “one people, living together, working together, playing together,” ideas he hoped his sculpture might also evoke.
Other references in the work are to Baltimore’s history as a maritime and steel center. The vertical steel elements and his dramatic arrangement of them conjure up the mast of the ship, and his inclusion of an actual propeller from a large ship, meant for children’s play here, underscores Baltimore’s seafaring history. In 1980 the sculpture was beautifully sited on an open, grassy knoll that was clearly visible from Pratt Street.
In 1975, di Suvero had been the first living artist to have his work shown in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris. That same year he was given an exhibition at The Whitney Museum, in New York City, and his monumentally scaled sculptures were sited across the New York metropolitan area.

SOMETHING PERSONAL is a one-to-one site-specific composition - I change it’s shape depending on the space and location I perform it at. It is based on live acoustic surround (using some live amplification, and involving existing sounds of surrounding area). There is only me and one listener in the room when I perform the piece on various instruments I own or I find at the performance place. The piece starts when the listener enters the space and closes his/her eyes (listener is asked to sit with closed eyes throughout the performance). The idea of this project is focused on ‘opening’ people’s ears for the sounds around them, and on creation of a very special aural experience through music performance, as well as creation of personal experience in perception of music.

This piece was a meditation the cyclical nature of grief and the very solitary ways in which individuals cope with personal tragedy. How much sadness can one endure? How many tears can one cry? Can the work of dealing with intense sorrow ultimately be transformative?
