'Tuscan Sun’ is an American rose!! It is a modern, tough floribunda rose with large flowers carried in small clusters of three to seven.

 

'Tuscan Sun' was bred in the USA by Dr. Keith Zary, for Jackson and Perkins, and was introduced in 2004.

Sheffield Forgemasters is a heavy engineering firm located in Sheffield, England. It is one of the few remaining steel businesses in what was the heart of Britain's steel industry, with origins dating back to the 1750s. The company specialises in the production of large bespoke steel castings and forgings, as well as standard rolls, ingots and bars. The photo here shows the bag fitration plant which cleans the dust and gases from the electric arc furnaces it operates.

 

In the 1980s, Forgemasters manufactured components for the Iraqi Project Babylon "supergun", which it had believed were for a petrochemical refinery. The British investigation exonerated the company's directors, and the incident became known as the Supergun affair.

 

The next 40 years saw a rather turbulent period for the company. First, it was divided and sold to American buyers in 1998, although the Sheffield Forgemasters name was retained. Then, in 2003, the new owners went bust and the business was eventually acquired in 2005 by another new owner. Ce que j’ai fait sur ce fichier numérique, c’est ce que je faisais autrefois sous mon agrandisseur quand je réalisais des tirages argentiques N&B en 30X40. Ni plus ni moins. Ce qui est plus facile lorsque l'on travaille en RAW.

A l’époque, dans mon laboratoire photo, je pouvais passer jusqu’à 8 heures sur une photo afin d’obtenir un tirage satisfaisant. Avec l’informatique, c’est réglé en une dizaine de minutes pour les fichiers les plus compliqués. A la prise de vue, je mesure avec précision la lumière de mes photos ; ce qui facilite le post-traitement..

Prachuap-Khiri-Khan (Thailand) - Context : on this trawler that the sailor moors to the pontoon, there are large lamps. This type of lighting is fitted to boats specializing in squid or cuttlefish fishing. Fishing that is practiced mainly at night. The technique is simple. Arrived on the fishing area, the captain lights these powerful lamps to attract phytoplankton which is the basic food of the cephalopods. All you have to do is wait for the cuttlefish and squid to come up from the bottom following their food. Then just put the nets in the sea to catch whatever comes your way.

 

The rays of the sun crossing the sky are not due to any predefined post-processing filter. To achieve this effect, I just measured the light on this sky. Which had the effect of making me close the aperture of my lens, highlighting all the details of this late afternoon sky.

This choice naturally led to underexposure of the boat and the sailor. There, on the other hand, I cleared up this part in post-production, in order to recover details.

What I did on this digital file is what I used to do under my enlarger when I made B&W silver prints in 30X40. No more no less. Which is very easy when working in RAW.

At the time, in my photo lab, I could spend up to 8 hours on a photo in order to obtain a satisfactory print. With the computer, it is settled in about ten minutes for the most complicated files. As a general rule, when shooting, I accurately measure the light in my photos; which facilitates post-processing.

 

Moss is important for Japanese gardens. Species of the Sugigoke (Polytrichum) family are often planted. The moss in the photo taken in Shiba-rikyuu is probably Tachigoke (Atrichum) in the above-mentioned family according to a web site specialising in moss gardening.

Comme souvent en Asie, les rues sont souvent spécialisées dans une profession : soudeurs, sculpteurs, peintres, brocanteurs etc. Ici, je suis dans la rue des tailleurs. Malgré la proximité du célèbre Taj Mahal, ce travailleur du textile ne voit jamais passer le moindre touriste, hormis quelques rares routards un peu curieux. Sa clientèle est essentiellement composée d'Indiens qui résident dans les quartiers avoisinants.

As is often the case in Asia, the streets are often specialized in one profession: welders, sculptors, painters, antique dealers, etc. Here, I am in the street of the tailors. Despite the proximity of the famous Taj Mahal, this textile worker never sees the slightest tourist passing by, except for a few curious backpackers. Its clientele is mainly made up of Indians who live in the neighboring districts

My Great Grandparents, whom I had the pleasure of knowing for the first thirteen years of my life, lived in the Victorian and Edwardian eras, and their large, rambling houses’ décor reflected this. The Victorians were fascinated by the world around them, but on their own terms, which means that they wanted the world brought to them into their homes, and that created the fashion for floral arrangements, shells and even stuffed animals under glass cloches or in large cabinets in their houses. My Great Grandparents had a number of these: an ornamental floral arrangement made entirely of collected shells on the mantle in the drawing room, dried floral arrangements in the hallway, morning room, drawing room and dining room, butterflies under glass in the hallway and my Great Grandfather had a stuffed owl under glass in his London study on his desk.

 

The theme for "Looking Close on Friday" for the 7th of February is "owl", and for the theme this week, I have chosen an owl under glass. Now I know you are going to say: that this should be a macro shot, and it is. What might surprise you is that everything in this photograph, from the ink bottles, spectacles and pen on the desk to the photos on the wall are all in fact 1:12 miniatures from my extensive collection which I use for photography purposes. You will therefore perhaps also be pleased to know that the owl under glass who is the focus of this image is not real, but a 1:12 miniature too. He is made from carved soapstone and only stands three centimetres high. Although not exact, this image very much reflects what my Great Grandfather’s desk looked like when I was a child: cluttered with a mixture of books and writing implements (including a blotter because he wrote with a fountain pen), family photographs and his stuffed white owl under glass! The big difference is he was a cigarette smoker, not a pipe smoker, so the pipe stand was not what he had. Anyone who follows my photostream knows that I love and collect 1:12 size miniatures which I photograph in realistic scenes. The artifice of recreating in minute detail items in 1:12 scale always amazes me, and it’s amazing how the eye can be fooled. As the main focus of my image, the stuffed white owl on a branch beneath a glass cloche is a beautiful vintage miniature piece made by an unknown artisan. The foliage is made up of real dried flowers and grasses, whilst the owl is cut from white soapstone. The base is stained wood and the cloche is real glass. This I acquired along with two others featuring shells from Kathleen Knight’s Dollhouse Shop in the United Kingdom.

 

On the desk are some 1:12 artisan miniature ink bottles, a pen, a blotter, a roller and a cloisonné letter opener all made by the Little Green Workshop in England who specialise in high end, high quality miniatures. The ink bottles are made from tiny faceted crystal beads and have sterling silver bottoms and lids. The pen, roller and ink blotter are also sterling silver, and the bottom of the blotter is made of real black felt, cut meticulously to size to fit snugly inside the frame. The letter opener with its beautiful real cloisonné handle in green and blue is made of brass. The letter rack behind the owl under glass is also made of brass and is a piece by the Little Green Workshop.

 

The books on the table are all covered in fine kid leather or suede. They, the spectacles made of wire, the calendar, and the letter are all artisan miniatures made by an unknown artist and were also sourced from Kathleen Knight’s Dollhouse Shop.

 

The family photos on the desk and hanging on the wall are all real photos, produced to high standards in 1:12 size on proper photographic paper by Little Things Dollhouse Miniatures in Lancashire. The large silver frame on the right-hand side of the photo hanging on the wall is actually a sterling silver miniature frame. It was made in Birmingham in 1908 and is hallmarked on the back of the frame. It has a red leather backing. The other frames are from various online miniatures suppliers, and all are metal.

 

The pipe stand with pipes on the right of the photograph is cast from pewter by Warwick Miniatures in Ireland, who are well known for the quality and detail applied to their pieces. It has been hand-painted by me.

 

The Chippendale desk itself is made by Bespaq, and it has a mahogany stain, and the design is taken from a real Chippendale desk. Its surface is covered in red dioxide red dioxide leather with a gilt trim. Bespaq is a high-end miniature furniture maker with high attention to detail and quality.

 

The gold flocked Edwardian wallpaper is beautiful hand impressed paper given to me by a friend.

This is a small Spring species, which is relatively easy to identify (at least the females, the males are harder but have a partially white face). The females specialise in collecting pollen from willows, but I have occasionally seen them on other flowers. HWW!

Also, Morgan does not use an assembly line. A large part of the production is still done by hand.

Since 1936, cars have been built using the same process, then common in automobile construction: on an aluminum chassis, consisting of two longitudinal beams and several crosspieces, is attached an ash frame, itself covered with the bodywork.

These are the last cars to still be built to this scheme; despite this ancient method, Morgans meet automotive safety standards.

One of the specialisations of the Amsterdam Hortus is in the plants of South Africa. There's a large Pelargonium collection, but also many others. Among them in the special climate house is this pretty, golden-yellow bulbous African Star Grass. The rains drove me indoors so I had a good opportunity to carefully examine it.

This Hypoxis (see inset left) is very attractive to insects and I saw various kinds of Hoverflies. Among them this Melanostoma mellinum. I don't know of an English common name for it, but in Dutch it's called in English translation the Triangle Hoverfly. The reason is immediately obvious when you look at its markings in the right inset photo. The main photo shows a female; I've posted it so you can see her developing white eggs through her translucent 'skin'. She's ensuring for a new generation of her kind.

PS Note the lightly green halter. It's coloring from whitish-yellow to greener during the development of her eggs.

Mésange charbonnière

 

La mésange s'est spécialisée dans le perçage des nids d'hiver d'où elle peut prélever la totalité des chenilles occupant le cocon. Elle s'est adaptée à la nature urticante de la chenille processionnaire en dépeçant cette denière de sa peau et de ses poils pour la consommer sans danger. Lors de l'alimentation des oisillons de la couvée, une famille de mésanges peut consommer 500 chenilles quotidiennement. La mésange effectue également des trous dans le nid d'hiver de la chenille processionnaire et y prélève les chenilles qui sont à l'intérieur. Les cocons peuvent être prédatés intégralement car la mésange doit manger de grandes quantités d'insectes pour subsister. Or, en période de froid les proies sont rares. On observe au Portugal une deuxième portée opportuniste lors de processions d'été sur des chenilles processionnaires au cycle décalé. Pour la mésange charbonnière, consommer ces insectes peut-être vital en période hivernale où la nourriture est peu abondante. On peut donc comprendre aisément l'utilité d'installer des nichoirs à mésange pour favoriser l'installation de cet auxiliaire de lutte écologique dans nos jardins!

Sparrowhawk - Accipiter Nisus

  

Though it is a predator which specialises in catching woodland birds, the Eurasian sparrowhawk can be found in any habitat and often hunts garden birds in towns and cities. Males tend to take smaller birds, including tits, finches, and sparrows; females catch primarily thrushes and starlings, but are capable of killing birds weighing 500 g (18 oz) or more.

 

The Eurasian sparrowhawk is found throughout the temperate and subtropical parts of the Old World; while birds from the northern parts of the range migrate south for winter, their southern counterparts remain resident or make dispersive movements. Eurasian sparrowhawks breed in suitable woodland of any type, with the nest, measuring up to 60 cm (2.0 ft) across, built using twigs in a tree. Four or five pale blue, brown-spotted eggs are laid; the success of the breeding attempt is dependent on the female maintaining a high weight while the male brings her food. The chicks hatch after 33 days and fledge after 24 to 28 days.

 

The probability of a juvenile surviving its first year is 34%, with 69% of adults surviving from one year to the next. Mortality in young males is greater than that of young females and the typical lifespan is four years. This species is now one of the most common birds of prey in Europe, although the population crashed after the Second World War. Organochlorine insecticides used to treat seeds before sowing built up in the bird population, and the concentrations in Eurasian sparrowhawks were enough to kill some outright and incapacitate others; affected birds laid eggs with fragile shells which broke during incubation. However, its population recovered after the chemicals were banned, and it is now relatively common, classified as being of Least Concern by BirdLife International.

 

The Eurasian sparrowhawk's hunting behaviour has brought it into conflict with humans for hundreds of years, particularly racing pigeon owners and people rearing poultry and gamebirds. It has also been blamed for decreases in passerine populations. The increase in population of the Eurasian Sparrowhawk coincides with the decline in House Sparrows in Britain. Studies of racing pigeon deaths found that Eurasian sparrowhawks were responsible for less than 1%. Falconers have utilised the Eurasian sparrowhawk since at least the 16th century; although the species has a reputation for being difficult to train, it is also praised for its courage. The species features in Teutonic mythology and is mentioned in works by writers including William Shakespeare, Alfred, Lord Tennyson and Ted Hughes.

 

Male Eurasian sparrowhawks regularly kill birds weighing up to 40 g (1.4 oz) and sometimes up to 120 g (4.2 oz); females can tackle prey up to 500 g (18 oz) or more. The weight of food consumed by adult birds daily is estimated to be 40–50 g (1.4–1.8 oz) for males and 50–70 g (1.8–2.5 oz) for females. During one year, a pair of Eurasian sparrowhawks could take 2,200 house sparrows, 600 common blackbirds or 110 wood pigeons. Species that feed in the open, far from cover, or are conspicuous by their behaviour or coloration, are taken more often by Eurasian sparrowhawks. For example, great tits and house sparrows are vulnerable to attack. Eurasian sparrowhawks may account for more than 50% of deaths in certain species, but the extent varies from area to area.

Oystercatcher

Scientific name: Haematopus ostralegus

 

The oystercatcher is very noisy wading bird with a loud 'peep-ing' call. On the coast, it specialises in eating shellfish, particularly cockles and mussels, which it either prises or hammers open with its strong, flattened bill. Originally a coastal species, the oystercatcher has moved further inland over the last 50 years to breed on waterways and lakes. Most UK birds still spend their winters by the sea, however, and are joined by birds from Norway and Iceland.
