hey mel, are you coming to church today?

I would, jerry, but your church was kinda weird last week.

what do you mean, weird?

man, it was like they were speaking another language.

oh, yeah, it gets like that sometimes. cool, right?

not really. I felt like I was trapped with a bunch of aliens.

yeah? maybe you were.

what?

but don't tell anybody. if you do, we'll know.

that's kinda scary, dude.

I'm just saying, be careful, if you receive my meaning.

my antennae are picking you up loud and clear.

you have antennae too?

no! do you?

of course, but I don't brag about it.

probably a good idea.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—

Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."

A poem written by Martin Niemöller, which criticized German's unwillingness to stand up to the Nazis as the regime cracked down on the political freedoms of socialists, trade unions, Jewish people, and, finally, "me."

Such a poignant poem that even in today's time {when you think we should have learned from our mistakes in the past) is very much relevant with a demagogue trying to seek the higher office by demonizing minority groups to invoke nationalist, xenophobic fervor.

// "When Trump came for the Mexicans, I did not speak out ---

Because I was not a Mexican.

When he came for the Muslims, I did not speak out ----

Because I was not a Muslim.

And then he came for me--- and there's no one left to speak for me."

"The English-speaking world may be divided into (1) those who neither know nor care what a split infinitive is; (2) those who do not know, but care very much; (3) those who know and condemn; (4) those who know and approve; and (5) those who know and distinguish...."

"I learn more from the anatomy of an ant or a blade of grass...than from all the books which have been written since the beginning of time. This is so, since I have begun...to read the book of God...the model according to which I correct the human books which have been copied badly and arbitrarily and without attention to the things that are written in the original book of the Universe."

– Tommaso Campanella 'Letter of 1607'.

"...the beautiful [to the Impressionists] is what the supernatural is to the Positivists – a metaphysical notion which can only get one into a muddle, and is to be severely let alone. Let it alone, they say, and it will come at its own pleasure; the painter’s proper field is the actual, an to give a vivid impression of how a thing happens to look, at a particular moment, is the essence of this vision."

– Henry James (1876).

Silence

The photo over her bed was from about 70 years previous, when she was a young woman. The clock was an irrelevancy, she had no need to mark time. The brain plaques took nearly everything, except the songs. Old songs. Old melodies, they were still there. She had stories and recipes. Despite her illness something told her it was time to go and so....she did.

I caught up on all who have stopped by.

Have a great day.

"Mercy, mercy I've been caught

Lying with my darkest thought

They grabbed my wings and pinned me to the wall

Oh light please try to hold your ground

Lift me up before I drown

The din creeps 'neath my skin

and I can't hear no goodness speak ..."

And speaking of fireworks -- a different kind of fireworks, that is. Someone behind me said to the artist that this chalk art reminded them of "Game of Thrones," and the artist (whose legs we see here) said that's what their inspiration was. No copycat artwork here, this was an outright steal. But, seriously, this is quite good. I like the colors and details, although I don't want to find out what that is at the left that appears to be melting under the dragon's breath.

Not the best lighting, but I thought the photos illustrate nicely Ariel's opinion of Magnus. Remember, after all, everything is Magnus' fault. If someone sneezes, it is Magnus' fault. If Curio foolheartedly attacks Gumbo, it is Magnus' fault. If I'm singing, it's Magnus' fault. . . poor Magnus. Oh, and yes, Ariel hates my singing. But she won't get in the shower with me to tell me.

The large size is kickin!

In normal circumstances I'm trying to add something to a train photo, context, scenery, workers, weather, etc. This was a day of shaking things up but sometimes the subject is so pleasing on its own it warrants a non-embellished meat and potatoes capture. Such is the case with CB&Q 504. I've long admired all the photos I've seen of CB&Q Chinese Red back in its glory days but never seen an example firsthand. This SD24 is just dazzling, it doesn't need any pyrotechnics from me as it pulls away from the depot with another CB&Q classic, the Nebraska Zephyr trainset. August 10, 2024.

I'm getting a look, I just don't know what it means.
