Spay a village of less than 2000 people has a million dollar view and a special relationship with the Marksburg, it is hard to escape a view of it from anywhere in the community the castle is ingrained in every residents memory.
What could make a view of this story book castle any finer, why fireworks of course and this is exactly what happens around the middle of August in Spay as part of the land program for the “Rhein in Flammen” that takes place throughout summer.
This fireworks and music program is best enjoyed from one of the floating tour boats from Koblenz to Rudesheim but if you really want to keep your feet on dry land Spay offers a great place to take it in with the Marksburg as a backdrop.
There can be no more a Disneyesque sight in Germany than fireworks launching from behind the Marksburg high atop its cliffs with the Rhein and the little village of Spay for its witnesses.

I never fail to be amazed by the connections between animals and people. This dog was totally dedicated to her rescuer who transported her to yesterday's clinic to be spayed, when we spay/neutered 54 pets belonging to Houston's low-income residents, plus a few rescued animals like this one.
After a quick stop in Boppard I made my way toward Spay a very small village that has the distinction of being directly across from the Marksburg, so probably rarely gets glanced at from the hordes traveling the Rhine as they are mesmerized by the sight of the fairytale castle opposite.
Sometimes on your way to make what you think is a great shot you happen by chance to cross paths with an even better and completely unexpected one.
This shot of the Marksburg appeared before my eyes as I was trying to figure out where I could get access to the Rhine to shoot across to the Castle.
I am thinking there was a savvy city planner somewhere that aligned the road with the castle and their lovely little church making for a breath taking view as you approach the village.

Logan has been recovering from spaying surgery for two weeks. She had much of her beautiful hair shaved from her tummy. So I thought I would post a Photo of Logan taken when she was a puppy.
The Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier is a pure bred dog originating from Ireland. The four coat varieties are: Traditional Irish, Heavy Irish, English, and American. These dogs have a single coat which sheds very little hair, so they can be more easily tolerated by people allergic to other breeds.
The Wheaten was bred in Ireland for over 200 years to be an all-purpose farm dog whose duties included herding, watching and guarding livestock, and vermin hunting and killing. They share a common ancestry with the Kerry Blue Terrier and the Irish Terrier but were not owned by gentry. Today, Wheaten terriers compete in obedience, agility, and tracking and are occasionally used in animal-assisted therapy as well. In Ireland, they were commonly referred to as the "Poor Man's Wolfhound." Their tails used to be docked to avoid taxes and were often kept to a specific size.
There is probably no other river in Germany enjoyed by so many than the Rhein and it also stands to reason that there is no other river that is so heavily promenaded as well.
The Italians call it passeggiata and the Germans call it the sparziergang but the idea is to find a lovely evening area that you can slowly stroll with your lady or to be seen so that you may find your lady.
The Rhine promenade of Spay invites you to not only an evening sparziergang but also daytime use of the jogger, biker and hiker with excellently kept continuous trail all the way to Boppard.
Who would not want to walk this lovely area for an evening stroll with its natural views of the river and in the shadow of a fairy tale castle how could this not be the most romantic stroll in all of Germany, those looking for the perfect proposal spot can thank me now.

Except this was for animals. Today as part of a month long initiative to promote spay/neuter to curtail the City's domestic animal overpopulation, and endorsed by City officials, K-9 Angels Rescue and the Empty Shelter Project, held a massive, free spay/neuter event at Denver Harbor Multi-Service Center. When I left at just after 3:00 p.m., over 400 pets had been checked in for surgery and still more were arriving. My role today was cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments 😊
Ella at vets to get spayed this week - she managed to semi open travel carrier in the car even though I had tied the zip tight, then managed to get out of the cage in the vets after surgery for paraded about as if she owned the place, and on the way home chewed & clawed through the mesh on the carrier! Then late yesterday afternoon I went out for an hour to come back to a large dead brown rat in the lounge & prime suspect is Ella with her skinned nose - it was almost as big as her!

Spay was probably founded by the ancient Celts from whom the name "Spay" stems. There exists also evidence of an ancient Roman Presence in the 4th century. Historically Spay was first mentioned 821 in a deed that placed the village under the protection of Louis the Pious. During the Holy Roman Empire Spay was owned by various feudal Lords and belonged to the archbishop elector of Trier who placed it under the administration of Boppard. It remained in the possession of the electors until it was absorbed by France during the Revolutionary epoch. It was assigned by the Congress of Vienna in 1815 to Prussia.

Sad that we didn't became full light at the moment that the advertising locomotive "Bauhaus" passed the spot in Spay. However I tried to rescue this picture in Photoshop and I like the result. What's your opinion?

While I was still searching for the optimal way to get rid of as much shrubbery as possible at this rather overgrown vantage point, I was surprised by diesel loco 215 025 in "Altrot", which belongs to EfW-Verkehrsgesellschaft, a private company specialising in providing motive power for work trains... which is precisely what this loco is doing! The loco may again be wearing its original number 215 025-8 on the front, but it is still registered as 225 025-6.
In the background is the Marksburg, while on the opposite bank of the river Rhine the St. Lambertuskirche of Spay completes the scenery. Braubach, 30-05-2018.
I had to take her E-collar off to get her to come downstairs and she still hesitated. Still off her food and had to mix a bit of wet cat food into water to get her to have a drink. There will be a whole lot of TLC happening today.
Many faces of stray and feral cats of Las Vegas, NV.
In the darkness of late nights, away from the neon lights of the famous Las Vegas strip, you would see several cat silhouettes along with a beautiful pair of curious, glowing, big and completely round eyes. Long, black fur and those eyes. Those mesmerizing eyes that capture your attention. Everything in this cat looked lovely, fluffy, so soft. Skittish and wary, yet inquisitive and innocent. In some ways trusting too.
And little did we know when we heard the trap close that it was our Googly Eyes who had just walked in. We were overjoyed as we were hoping to give this particular cat a better life with no preventable fights and injuries! Early following morning, I then drove Googly Eyes and another cat (Little Orange 1) to 'Heaven Can Wait Animal Society' in Las Vegas to be TNRd.
Googly Eyes is one of Kong's (see previous post) litter mates, his true sibling. We had always believed he is a she, a cute little girl. To our great surprise, when picking him up along with Little Orange 1, she was indeed a boy and was neutered instead. He also had a hernia that the amazing vets there had repaired. Poor fluffy boy turned out to be halfway hairless with a skinny rat tail minus a black tuft in the end of that tail. He must have been beyond embarrassed to go back to his colony!
Heaven Can Wait Animal Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing unnecessary euthanasia and improving quality of life for cats and dogs through spay/neuter services, quality veterinary care, community outreach, and advocacy. The organization is committed to providing accessible services throughout Southern Nevada.
She went to the vet early in the morning and we just collected her. Still groggy from anesthesia and a bit grumpy, but fine.

Above Braubach am Rhein and directly across from Spay lies the Marksburg the crown jewel of the Mittle Rhein valley and now housing the German castle preservation society.
Imagine having this as your backyard view it must have inspired a thousand little boys to grow up to be knights in its day and most likely the same number of girls to become ladies.
The castle has the distinction of being the only hilltop castle along this part of the Rhine that was never fully destroyed during its long history of 800+ years.
Originally this castle was named after the city, Burg Braubach, but this changed after the chapel dedicated to St Mark was built there is a legend also associated with the naming to Marksburg.
The legend goes that during the battle of Marchfield in 1278 an evangelist named Markus was instrumental in saving the castle and villagers and is named a patron saint of the castle but it was slow on the uptake because it is not mentioned as Markusburg until 300 years later.

The look of love! This is all about education and making free or low-cost spay/neuter services available in Houston's low-income communities. Many of the people I talked to yesterday at BIG FIX Houston, were totally unaware of the impact that one unsterilized pet can have upon the future of a neighborhood - in 6 years one unspayed female's line can reproduce 67,000 dogs. Met wonderful people as I crossed the city to visit the 11 stations we had set up to offer free spay/neuter, vaccinations, and microchips. We had great support from City officials, including Mayor Turner.
yesterday afternoon
She got spayed today so she is now very under the weather, dozy and withdrawn. Poor wee thing, she really doesnt like the plastic cone that prevents her mouth getting at the stitches. I am picking up a click and collect inflatable collar tomorrow and i'm hoping she will tolerate that a bit better. She needs to wear the cone for 10 days.
Suzi Quatro - Wake up Little Susie
This past Wednesday Minty had to get spayed. She had come into heat for the first time in November. Very late for a first time heat. She will be two years old in February. Everything with the heat went fine and she was back to herself until Monday.
On Monday I noticed her licking at herself a lot. When I took a look I saw she had a pus-like discharge. She had good energy and the only thing that was off was she was not eating great. I took her to work with me and the doctors ran blood, which was all normal. When the doctor took a sample of the discharge and looked under the microscope he did find bacteria.
The interesting thing is that Minty’s sibling had also come into heat late. A few months before Minty but still late. Her sister ended up having a pyometra (infected Uterus) shortly after her heat. Highly unusual for a dog to have a pyometra after a first heat.
The doctor checked out Minty’s uterus with the ultrasound and found it to be fluid filled. It was decided to start her on antibiotics and check her bloodwork again the following day. Usually with a pyometra they have a high white blood cell count. Minty’s bloods were normal the first day but the second day they were ever so slightly up. So with that information and in light of the fact her sister had had a pyometra they felt it would be best to spay her.
Normally they like to wait at least two months after a heat to spay a dog. That way all the hormones have a chance to get back to normal. However, better to spay her now than to let her become sick and then have to do surgery on a sick dog.
She did fine through the surgery and the uterus was quite large and fluid filled. Hopefully she will be fine in the long run. I just felt badly that her body didn’t get the chance to recover from being in heat.
Here she is in her Elizabethan Collar trying to elicit some sympathy from me. Of course she was successful.
The Marksburg is a fortress above the town of Braubach in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. It is the only medieval castle of the Middle Rhine that has never been destroyed. It is one of the principal sites of the UNESCO World Heritage Rhine Gorge. The fortress was used for protection rather than as a residence for royal families. The castle was built to protect the town of Braubach and to reinforce the customs facilities. It was built about 1117 and explicitly first mentioned in 1231.
I just realised I've never shown off Nito & Boo. Boo is on the left, Nito on the right. These sweet girls are sisters, and will be 2 in a couple of months. Since spaying all my girls, I've noticed they're living a lot longer, and have a lot less health problems.
