2/52 - Minty - Poor Pup
This past Wednesday Minty had to get spayed. She had come into heat for the first time in November. Very late for a first time heat. She will be two years old in February. Everything with the heat went fine and she was back to herself until Monday.
On Monday I noticed her licking at herself a lot. When I took a look I saw she had a pus-like discharge. She had good energy and the only thing that was off was she was not eating great. I took her to work with me and the doctors ran blood, which was all normal. When the doctor took a sample of the discharge and looked under the microscope he did find bacteria.
The interesting thing is that Minty’s sibling had also come into heat late. A few months before Minty but still late. Her sister ended up having a pyometra (infected Uterus) shortly after her heat. Highly unusual for a dog to have a pyometra after a first heat.
The doctor checked out Minty’s uterus with the ultrasound and found it to be fluid filled. It was decided to start her on antibiotics and check her bloodwork again the following day. Usually with a pyometra they have a high white blood cell count. Minty’s bloods were normal the first day but the second day they were ever so slightly up. So with that information and in light of the fact her sister had had a pyometra they felt it would be best to spay her.
Normally they like to wait at least two months after a heat to spay a dog. That way all the hormones have a chance to get back to normal. However, better to spay her now than to let her become sick and then have to do surgery on a sick dog.
She did fine through the surgery and the uterus was quite large and fluid filled. Hopefully she will be fine in the long run. I just felt badly that her body didn’t get the chance to recover from being in heat.
Here she is in her Elizabethan Collar trying to elicit some sympathy from me. Of course she was successful.
