A species of dabbling duck that is native to South America and can sometimes be also known as the Argentine Red Shoveler. Preferred habitat is dense reed beds, lagoons, marshes and shallow lakes and pools. Like other species of shovelers they feed by sifting the surface of the water filtering out small aquatic animals and plants through their bill which contains tiny vertical slits known as lamellae along the lower and upper sides of the bill. The female hen differs from the male who has a red to pink plumage.

Photo from 2020 I found recently ;-).

Mostly mallards (Anas platyrhynchos), a few northern shovelers (Spatula clypeata) and two blue-winged teals (Spatula discors), all of the Anatidae family, flying overhead.

Small duck with chalky-blue patches on the upperwing (visible in flight). Breeding males unmistakable with bold white crescent in front of eye and polka-dotted sides. Females are cold brown overall and intricately patterned. Look for a hint of a pale crescent on the face, as well as a dark eyeline and pale eye-arcs. Usually found in shallow wetlands or marshes, where it can occur in pairs or flocks, sometimes mixed with other species of ducks. Compare with other teal species: female Cinnamon Teal is warmer-toned overall and has a duller face pattern, while female Green-winged Teal is more compact, darker, and has a different wing pattern in flight. Just three of these lovely ducks were inhabiting the wetland. Of course, it could also be that the local 4th graders were out in hordes doing a project on wetlands and so most ducks took shelter deep in the reeds.

- one of the rarer ducks, at least in this nature reserve, where you might find it a few times per month

Once thought to be a species of Silver Teal and can be found in the Andes of Peru, western Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina. Like geese and swans both parents of Puna Teal will rear their own ducklings. Puna Teal are a species of dabbling ducks and belong to the family Anatidae.

for me a very rare sight - they are breeding in Europe as well but are migratiing great distances. This one is probably on its way to its breeding area.

Für mich eine Seltenheit - Knäkenten brüten in Europa, sind aber Zugvögel und migrieren über große Distanzen. Dieser Erpel ist wahrscheinlich auf dem Weg in sein Brutgebiet

I will be ducking out for a week or so. I am off the the Wings Over the Rockies Festival in Inveremere, British Columbia.

Happy shooting to all.

I was photographing a pair of Northern Shovelers peacefully swimming and foraging, when another male flew in and landed close. I am glad I got this piece of the explosive action that immediately followed.

The interloper got the message.

Small duck with chalky-blue patches on the upperwing (visible in flight). Breeding males unmistakable with rich reddish-brown color overall. Females are buffy-brownish overall and intricately patterned. Look for rather plain face and longer, more spatulate-shaped bill than Blue-winged Teal. Widespread and fairly common throughout western North America and South America, as far south as Tierra del Fuego. Usually found in shallow wetlands or marshes, where it can occur in pairs or flocks, sometimes mixed with other species of ducks. (eBird)

We finally found one beautiful male Cinnamon Teal feeding lazily in the dykes. This shot was taken from across the road, where he would not see me. As soon as I came within eyeball range, though, he took off full speed ahead.

Garganey - Spatula querquedula (M)

Neath

The garganey (Spatula querquedula) is a small dabbling duck. It breeds in much of Europe and western Asia, but is strictly migratory, with the entire population moving to southern Africa, India (in particular Santragachi), Bangladesh (in the natural reservoirs of Sylhet district) and Australasia in winter, where large flocks can occur.

The adult male is unmistakable, with its brown head and breast with a broad white crescent over the eye. The rest of the plumage is grey, with loose grey scapular feathers It has a grey bill and legs. In flight it shows a pale blue speculum with a white border. When swimming it will show prominent white edges on its tertials. His crown (anatomy) is dark and face is reddish brown.

Some care is needed in separating the brown female from the similar common teal, but the stronger face markings and more frequent head-shaking when dabbling are good indicators.

Garganey are rare breeding birds in the British Isles, with most breeding in quiet marshes in Norfolk and Suffolk. In Ireland a few pairs breed in Wexford, with occasional breeding elsewhere.

In Deutschland sind Knäkenten sehr selten.

Von April bis September brüten Knäkenten im nördlichen und östlichen Europa. Im Winter ziehen sie nach Afrika und überqueren sogar die Sahara.
