- one of the rarer ducks, at least in this nature reserve, where you might find it a few times per month

- eine der selteneren Enten, zumindest in den Rieselfeldern, wo man sie maximal einige Male pro Monat sieht

for me a very rare sight - they are breeding in Europe as well but are migratiing great distances. This one is probably on its way to its breeding area.

Für mich eine Seltenheit - Knäkenten brüten in Europa, sind aber Zugvögel und migrieren über große Distanzen. Dieser Erpel ist wahrscheinlich auf dem Weg in sein Brutgebiet

Another shot of this Northern Shoveler interaction (Spatula clypeata)

I will be ducking out for a week or so. I am off the the Wings Over the Rockies Festival in Inveremere, British Columbia.

Happy shooting to all.

I was photographing a pair of Northern Shovelers peacefully swimming and foraging, when another male flew in and landed close. I am glad I got this piece of the explosive action that immediately followed.

The interloper got the message.

This handsome drake gave me a close swim-by with just a couple of seconds of this "drop-wing" pose which exposed the the beautiful secondary wing coverts.

Very cold here. I have been looking back at favorite duck shots taken in warmer days this year but not posted.

Post preening posture with a little bling on the leg.

This is the last of my series of preening ducks taken from warmer days. Thanks for your comments.

I was back to winter birding today as the temperatures moderated and I was more inspired to travel out there again.

This was taken 9 days ago while he was walking toward the open water just a few feet away. Happy to say that there is no more ice at that location.

Zoom in to see lamellae detail

Lamellae are small, fine comblike structures found in rows along the inside of the bill. When waterfowl are feeding, sediment and water enter the bill. Lamellae filter out inedible material, while trapping invertebrates, seeds, and other food items. Most dabbling ducks have 50 to 70 lamellae on their upper and lower mandibles. Northern shovelers are filter feeders that have very well-developed lamellae, which help them extract tiny food items from the water. Each northern shoveler has about 400 lamallae—180 on their upper mandible and 220 on their lower mandible.

I saw this Shoveler at Alresford, Hampshire recently on a grey day. My thanks to Tim Melling for establishing that it is a male moulting out of eclipse plumage.

Thank you all for your kind responses.

Spatula querquedula

Edenbrook Country Park, Hampshire

The Garganey is a small dabbling duck. It breeds in much of Europe and across the Palearctic, but is strictly migratory, with the entire population moving to southern Africa, India, Bangladesh and Australasia in winter, where large flocks can occur.

This bird is in winter plumage and seen at Slimbridge. Possibly a female. Can anyone confirm, please?

The red shoveler breeds in the southern half of South America. It ranges from Tierra del Fuego northwards to Chile and most parts of Argentina, as well as to the Falkland Islands, and there are small isolated breeding populations in southern Peru. It inhabits shallow lakes and pools with dense reed beds and marshes and can also be found in brackish waters, such as coastal lagoons and estuaries.

The species has a spatula-shaped bill, a green speculum, and light blue upper wing converts. Male shovelers vary in color from red to paler shades of red (and pink), while the females tend to have large, dark bills. Adults reach a size of about 45–56 centimetres (18–22 in), weigh about 523–608 grams (1.153–1.340 lb),[2] and have a wingspan of about 66–73 centimetres (26–29 in).

Consigliato a chi vuole fare foto spettacolari.

Ciao a tutti!
