This image of a Sparkling Violetear shows the violet feathers on the side of the head that form “ears” when they are flared. This photo also shows the bluish belly plumage that distinguishes this species from Lesser Violetear (which is smaller but otherwise similar). This hummingbird was seen at Cock-of-the-Rock Lodge on Manu Road, Peru. The range of Sparkling Violetear extends from Venezuela south into northern Argentina, mainly along the Andes mountain chain.

Large hummingbird that usually dominates feeders or flower patches. Sparkling green overall with purplish-blue patches on cheeks and belly. Sexes alike. Common and widespread in the Andes. Uses open habitats, including forest edge, shrubby agricultural land, and towns and cities. Found from 400–4,500 m; most common from the subtropical zone up to high elevation scrub and dry valleys, but also wanders low into foothills. Listen for the incessant song, a never-ending series of metallic chip notes. Picture taken at Cusco, Peru.
