In all fairness, there is always an excuse for sparkles no matter the season. However, winter is undoubtedly the most sparkliest season of all. [read more...]

The Sparkling Violetear is one of the most widely distributed species of hummingbird in the Andes, as it occurs from northern Venezuela south to northwestern Argentina; it also has an outpost on the tepuis of southern Venezuela and adjacent northern Brazil. In common with other species of violetear, it is not a bird of deep forest. Instead it is found at forest edge and open areas with scattered shrubs; it also adapts to nonnative flowering trees such as Eucalyptus. Sparkling Violetears are energetic songsters, and repeat their simple song for long periods of time. Sparkling Violetears are similar to the Green Violetear (Colibri thalassinus), but are larger, and have an extensive blue patch on the belly. Sparkling Violetears also tend to occur at higher elevations than does the Green Violetear; in at least some parts of its range, however, the Sparkling is an elevational migrant, and so is found over a very broad elevational zone. doi.org/10.2173/bow.spvear1.01

A pile of Chocolate Orange biscuits against a sparkly background.

I went to the park early before work yesterday and the plants were being watered so I was lucky to get this sparkly shot.

Thank you for your visit, most appreciated!p

The water fountain in the Bert Weeks Memorial Garden on Windsor, Ontario’s riverfront is wonderful. A while back, I posted a night time, long exposure version of this fountain with a slightly different perspective. But this particular image I took earlier in the evening when the sun was still up. What caught my eye was the interesting, sparkling effect the light had on the falling water.

Ploughing through the snow, it is hard work getting to the grass, morning sun made the snow to sparkle like stardust.

Subalpine Fleabane, Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

There were quite a few of these lovely light purple flowers dotting the meadows and lining the edges of Crystal Lake on Saturday. There was one right next to the rock I was sitting on at the lake so I thought I would be lazy and try take a photo of it without getting up from relaxing with my feet in the water! I was taking the shots from above and after the first couple of photos, noticed that having the rippling water in the background rather than the grass made for a rather pretty sparkle effect behind the flower.
