The Trekkies among you might remember the episode where Cpt. James Tiberius Kirk and his crew involuntarily swap places with their counterparts from an evil parallel universe where chaos, insanity and illogic rule ("Mirror, Mirror", first broadcasted in 1967). So it might not come as a real surprise to you that there are many more "Mirror Universes". Like the one you can see in my image, into which I was sucked after an unusally high intake of sugar during my quest of finding a nice idea for the "Candy" theme. It's the always colourful, cheery Candyverse, a world fuelled by pure sugar. Depicted in my photo is the UCC's (UCC: United Candy Federation) flagship, the majestic UCC Nonpareille, as it takes up full SOL speed (SOL 22), heading to another mission. Candyverse, of course, has its very own counterpart / parallel universe, the slightly bland Healthyverse.

Actually, the UCC Nonpareille's appearance was pure chance. I had bought three packs of different candies for the theme (strawberry/pepper, passion fruit/chili, and "pebble candies", sugar-coated sweet liquorice candies that look like pebbles).

But while (too) delicious, neither the strawberry nor the passion fruit candies were very photogenic, and the "Candyhenge" stone circle I had made with the pebble candies looked a little boring. I then remembered the bottle of nonpareils which I'd once bought for another MM theme. Nonpareils are certainly the tiniest type of candy that exists, so I thought they'd be well suited for MMs. I thought about forming a classical Cretan circular maze with them. To make things a little easier, I wanted to use a bronze pendant (diameter: 3 cm / 1,18 inches) which is made after one of those classical mazes as template. But when I looked at it I knew it would take ages to put the seemingly simple, but actually not so simple maze shape free-handed. And since it was late, and I needed a photo, I decided to make things even more simple by simply arranging the nonpareils right on the pendant by following the debossed lines on it. And although I had actually focused on the maze shape, all of a sudden the USS Enterprise, or rather its Candyverse counterpart was there, as if it had just emerged from a Warp tunnel – bang!

A funny thing with the MM photos is that in most cases it's either the very first or one of the last images I take for a theme that makes it. This is the second to last image, taken last night, handheld and with the Lensbaby SOL 22 which I'd equipped with the 10 mm extension tube. The red light reflections were created by using a translucent, red raspberry lollipop as colour filter (after all, we are in Candyverse). Since the Lensbaby created a kind of motion blur, I thought I'd highlight that effect by adding a texture to it that would look like star trails right in the moment the starship reaches its maximum speed. The "Drizzle left" weather texture in ON1 did the trick :) Other than that I've only done minimal processing steps in DXO (mainly sharpening and denoising) and in Analog Efex.

HMM, Everyone, have a nice week ahead!

P.S. I'm trying to catch up with you tonight!

The ISEE team has spent the day exploring the desert surface of MOA-2010-BLG-328L b, a super earth orbiting a star by the same name. This MOA has an orbital period of 972 days which means its summer season is equal to a full year on earth. Because of its size a full day equals approximately 4.267 times a standard day on earth. Needless to say they are ready for this day to end.

Are they out there?

"Oh' yes they are"

I spotted this red spaceship hovering outside my window tonight.

It was making a humming noise all lit up with something moving around inside a extraterritorial alien or aliens .... who knows?

It just hovered around for a while, then as quickly as it came it disappeared in a big red fash.

I checked to see if I was tapered with, you know .... they do abduct Earthlings and do tests etc.

Luckily enough all seemed intact no scares or anything adrift .... so all good!

Except one of my patterned socks was inside out and my boxers were back to front, but nothing stranger than that, so just like normal actually .....

...... "Ha ha!" 😂

Making of UFO

Actually this is a spiky yellow ball, a children's toy, it's really good fun, a ball that flashes different colours when bounced.

I activated it and took numerous photographs whilst it flashed in the dark.

On viewing my endeavours I thought this image looked intriguing, a spaceship shape possibly, so there we have it .... Unidentified Flying Object ....

UFO.

This flashing ball is pretty small really the overall diameter of the circle measures just under 3 inches.

I bought this toy from my local post office shop, and didn't know it flashed in different colours until I had already taken some photos .

Then I bounced it off the floor to see if it bounced well and was amazed.

So then I tried some photography with the ball flashing, it does change to four different colours and flashes for around one minute.

The underside of one of Concords engines

I had to post it to get it off my chest ..lol

I created this particular shot with the idea of making something so mundane into something filled with wonder. I feel like It was a success!

This shot was taken in a small puddle of ditch water that has overflowed into the grassy area of our park after a recent rainstorm. It was a simple everyday location that kids and adults alike walked past or avoided. It just looked messy and muddy. I on the other hand got there at golden hour as the sun reached a low angle in the west. The reflections of the sun off the broken puddle made for a rich bokeh swirl.

This astronaut figure has been my favorite to shoot lately because it lends to a bit of wonder and mystery. I can create without any bounds to reality as we know it. I sloshed out a bit into the puddle and knelt down to setup the shot. I pushed the astronaut down and it kept floating so I had to take off the helmet and fill with water. I left one arm up reach through the water with the intention to turn the image 90 degrees for the shot you see above.

I then edited in a stark black & white with some blueish space hues. I’m really happy with the results. A simple everyday puddle has become a wondrous image to ponder over.

INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION

"Space, the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its 5-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before."

('USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)' by Furuta)

I waited up until 1.30 am this morning to try and capture the best image of the blue supermoon.

Unfortunately, over here in Bristol, it was rather cloudy and overcast.

Eventually, I did manage to get a few shots, so it really was worth the late night extravaganza.

I really enjoyed watching the beautiful clouds passing by. Yes, it was good fun!

It's definitely a treat to view the Super Moon, as such an event will be many years away.

I used the creative settings on my camera to achieve this image, I know that the Super Moon is its normal colour, just that it's closer to the earth 🌎 and that the reason it's a blue moon is because there were two full moons this month. 💙 😊

Love & Peace Everyone!🌛

After a few hours of light rain and some thunder, the skies cleared after midnight. I was able to catch the July full moon that coincides with the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 in 1969. I put it together with the mission patch. Thanks NASA

We people blast off to try to find answers to life's questions of where we came from, and what else is out in the universe, or if there are others like us, and if there really is a God who made us all. The truth is that space is not the final frontier, as they said in "Star Trek". GOD is the final frontier! It all begins and ends with Him. Though we can't get to Him in a space ship, we can get to Him on our knees, just by opening our hearts to His Son, Jesus.

All of our trips into outer space make for interesting discussion, and those who go are brave and curious, but even space won't ever provide all the answers we seek. We, the finite, seek the infinite. It isn't ours to have in this world. It isn't ours to have in this LIFE. Meanwhile, going to the far reaches of space is fun, and those who do are the luckiest among us by virtue of the fact that when they look down on our little planet, and realize that all we've ever really known, and everyone we've ever loved has been on that little speck of blue, but they can see that there is so much more beyond us, which to me suggests no other option than a Creator and a plan for that creation. It is a humbling thing.

This scene is outside the Kennedy Space Center at Cape Canaveral in Titusville, Florida. I drove past it on Sunday and was shooting as I went. It's nice sometimes to be a passenger so I can take pics! All were shot through the car windows in motion, so most weren't any good, but a couple, like this one, were pretty decent.

I got this model of the Romulan Bird of Prey for Christmas and took this shot the day after. I accomplished this by taping some pictures of space of onto a wall in a room at night, placing the model by them on its stand, then shined a colored flashlight on the miniature. Afterwards, edited out some visible elements, such as the floor, tape, and the stand.

Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the space shuttle Endeavour. Its 13-day mission: to install a connecting module to the International Space Station that will (1) expand the area for crew members, life support, and environmental control systems; and (2) provide a panoramic view of Earth, celestial objects, and visiting spacecrafts through a 7-window cupola. To boldly go where few humans have gone before.

(I couldn't resist. What can I say? Witnessing our shuttle program's final night launch makes one a bit sappy.)

Almost 24 hours after Sunday morning's early morning launch was scrubbed due to unfavorable weather, Endeavour successfully ascended into space under perfect viewing conditions. It was poetic -- a tiny glowing sun swiftly rose, traversed the sky, and disappeared amongst the stars.

I'm not a morning person, and two consecutive days of pre-dawn awakening is a danger that I would normally avoid. At that hour, I typically wake in a state of confusion and have conversations with the voices in my alarm clock. However, I managed to pop out of bed at approximately 4:10 AM, grabbed my camera and tripod, and stepped outside my back door into what felt like an icebox to set up just in time. My settings and framing were similar to those I used for the Discovery launch last August. Granted, that shot was taken at a shorter focal length and cropped quite a bit, but it's incredible to compare the low light sensitivity of the D60 vs. the D700! Interestingly, Discovery's booster exhaust plume was visible, whereas Endeavour's was not -- presumably due to the dryer air and a slight wind.

I'm pleased with the shadow detail & the wispy patches of cirrus clouds. And how 'bout those star trails?! I didn't get to set a shutter delay, which caused the slight hiccup at the beginning of the shuttle trail. The Nikon 80-200mm is known for ghosting & lens flares, and my lens captured a few. I attempted to minimize them in post-production; you can especially see them at large view. I adjusted the white balance to counteract some of the sodium vapor light from street lamps.

There's no way to capture the true awesomeness of a night launch. I just tried to make it look cool. Let me know what you think!

This photo won 3rd place in the PUDDLE 2016 Photo and Art Contest! : ) I entered two photos the other being Among the Stars. The theme for this years' PUDDLE was Space: The Final Frontier.

I enjoyed veiwing everyone's creative entries which can be seen here: flic.kr/g/rWNaa

I had a lot of fun creating the photos and here's how I did it:

All photos including sun and moon background photos were taken by me.

Inspiration: Taeyang's name, meaning Sun, his sister Dal's name, meaning Moon, and their 10th anniversary this year.

Photo Manipulation: Sun and moon photos are combined to make the background of which Gyro and Icarus are layered over and added dark and light vignette.

All post processing was done in Corel PaintShop Pro X7.

To make the background photos fade into each other I used the Selection tool with Feathering: 150 and selected an area around the moon larger than the resized sun photo and pasted the selection as a New Layer over the sun photo.

Cut out Gyro and Icarus using this technique: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BxdQK_lkaiQ

Then pasted them as a New Layer over the sun and moon photos. Used the Move tool to align everything then merged all the layers (flattened) into one.

Half dark and light vignette:

Selected the moon half of the photo, promoted the selection to a Layer. Added the Dark vignette to the Background Layer (sun half) and the light to the Promoted Selection (moon half).

Gyro's outfit: black outer shirt from his stock, white shirt from My Scene Goes Hollywood Ryan, jeans from My Scene Goes Hollywood Hudson.

Icarus' outfit: arm warmers from her stock, the necklace, shirt and pants are from Bratz Twiins Nona and Tess.

April 12, 2011 is the 50th anniversary of the first human space flight. I’m usually not much for composite images, but I wanted to do something to commemorate the singular achievement of Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin, may his memory be for blessing. There are so many discussions this simple idea spawns: life, the universe and everything.

Monday, April 5, 2010 - 6:21 AM EST

Note: Best viewed while listening to Mission Control on SomaFM. So awesome.

Last night at 11:15 PM, we drove south to Titusville, Florida to witness the launch of the space shuttle Discovery. After snapping previous night launches of Discovery and Endeavour from our back yard (and numerous others from the beaches in St Augustine), we were eager to get a closer view of the action. We didn't have tickets to Kennedy Space Center or the NASA Causeway, so we opted for Space View Park: "The best place to view a Space Shuttle launch - if you haven't got a NASA pass." The park is located less than 15 miles and directly across Indian River from the launch pads. It boasts an unobstructed view of the shuttle launch and live audio feed direct from NASA control room.

The journey was under two hours, and we foolishly thought we were arriving quite early at 12:45 AM. However, the final launches are attracting even more crowds than expected. We made our own parking spot in a bank lot with bumper-to-bumper car camping. Upon entering the park we noticed a long line at the restroom -- apparently, someone forgot to unlock them! Our first observation was the noise. [Direct and entirely accurate quote from Zack: Judging by the crowd at Space View Park, you would think the shuttle runs on snore power.] People zonked out everywhere: snoozing on chairs and on air mattresses, slumbering in sleeping bags and in tents. By some miracle we "discovered" a 2nd row spot wedged in between the Indian River and a park path. The couple in front of us sat/slept in chairs, so we had a straight view of the launch pad. Wow.

The next few hours were a blur, and most of my memories feature loud talkers, accidental bumpers, and hilarious tweets from this gal. But I'm pretty sure I caught a few Z's. When I woke up, the crowd had multiplied, and we were scrunched in like a can of sardines. Visits to the restroom and our car (with our 2nd camera inside) were out of the question. The NASA audio feed kept us in the loop, and despite a couple of snags, Discovery lifted off successfully at 6:21 AM, just as a smidge of dawn appeared on the horizon. Since I had a few long exposure shots, I opted for a snap with visible plumage and puffs of smoke. It was a team effort: I directed the scene, Zack framed and adjusted settings, and I clicked the shutter! A wee bit underexposed, but daaaaaaang!

There's so much more to tell regarding this experience -- from a sighting (and snapping) of the International Space Station to Zack's insane capture of the boosters separating to the evolution of a noctilucent cloud that enveloped the shuttle like a cell membrane and eventually became a sun-streaked heart cloud that captivated spectators for miles from our viewing site! I'll post more photos soon, so come back and visit!
