Kansas Cosmosphere
The suit displayed here was first used by pilots of the famous SR-71 high altitude reconnaissance plane, on display in the Cosmosphere lobby. The full pressure suit provided the pilot with oxygen and artificial atmospheric pressure. Connected directly to the aircraft, the suit was therefore dependent on the integrity of the craft to maintain life support. However, the suit was capable of maintaining pressure temporarily on its own in the event the pilot was forced to bail out. The SR-71 flight garment was successfully adapted for spaceflight use by space shuttle pilots in the early days of the STS program.

Kansas Cosmosphere
The Command Module pilots (CMP) who flew aboard Apollos 7-14 never left the safety of their spacecraft. Because of this, there was no reason for them to wear the thick, bulky and heavy extravehicular space suits required for their crewmates that ventured outside the spacecraft.
For the CMPs that flew these early missions, a lightweight intervehicular (IV) space suit was developed. The inner pressure garment assembly was nearly identical to the one worn on the Moon, but its outer cover was comprised of only two layers (as opposed to the 18 layers of the lunar suit). The primary purpose of this lightweight cover layer was to protect the astronaut in case of an accidental fire in the spacecraft's pure oxygen environment.
The pressure bubble helmet, IV gloves and boots were identical to the LEVA suit. Visually, the primary difference between the intervehicular and extravehicular suits was that the IV unit contained only one set of hose connectors on the front, since it was never to be tied into a PLSS backpack for lunar EVA.
All Apollo space suits were manufactured by ILC Industries in Dover, Delaware.

after her brief but memorable appearance in the last strip I posted I thought it was time she had her own show.
Lisa Young (center), a spacesuit conservator at the National Air and Space Museum, talks about her recent work to determine if Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong repaired his spacesuit while on the historic mission. Young also spoke about the fragility of working with spacesuits, not because they went into space but because of the way the garments' materials react to other chemically.

This Soviet Space suit belongs to the Hutchinson Cosmosphere And Space Science Center. The Cosmosphere has the largest collection of Russian spacecraft and equipment in the western hemisphere. They was of course an extensive collection of US space equipment including items captured from the Germans in WW2. These include a V1 and V2.

National Naval Aviation Museum
The XN-13 suit displayed here was manufactured for the Navy by B.F. Goodrich and is one of the early adaptations of the company's Mark IV pressure suit used in the development of those worn by the Mercury astronauts. Weighing 22 lb, the Mercury suits consisted of three layers of nylon. The inner walls were ventilated for air circulation and cooling and also prevented leakage. The outer shell of HT-1 aluminized nylon, distinctive because of its silver color, was flame resistant in order to protect the astronaut in the event of a fire. It also gave America's new space pioneers a futuristic appearance.

Apollo 14 - Jan 31- Feb 5, 1971
One of the few pieces of equipment that flew the entire mission and had to work from launch to landing was Apollo's A7-L spacesuit. The suit had to interface with the command module, launch support system and the lunar module. Lastly the suit had to work with the portable life support system and then all the way back to Earth.
"The design goal of the spacesuit was to give man enough mobility to get out and walk - and the key word is walk - on the surface of the moon," explained Richard Ellis, and employee of ILC Dover, the company NASA contracted to build the suits.
Three suits were custom-made for each astronaut: two suits that were flight-ready and one for training purposes. In all, 22 layers of fabrics and materials were stitched, glued and cemented together to create the final suit assembly.
