"On Mars, low air pressure and oxygen levels will require you to wear a pressurized spacesuit. Today's extra-vehicular activity suits are essentially gas-pressurized balloons. When inflated, they become rigid and stiff.

"Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor Dava Newman is reinventing the spacesuit for Mars. Her form-fitting BioSuit(TM) is made of stretchy fibers and incorporates active materials. The suit applies pressure directly to the skin." [Text accompanying the exhibit]

Made a spacesuit with LEGO.

The suit design is based on the new NASA Artemis spacesuit, to be worn by the first female moonwalker in 2024.

Expedition 55 flight engineers Drew Feustel and Ricky Arnold will exit the station through the Quest airlock at around 8:10 a.m. EDT (1210 GMT). NASA will provide live coverage starting at 6:30 a.m. EDT (1030 GMT), when the astronauts are getting ready for their work and putting on their spacesuits.

The astronauts will upgrade the station's cooling system hardware and also install new communications equipment to help with future dockings of commercial crew spacecraft.

The space suits from the Apollo porgram (moonwalk 1969-72) and Artemis (2024-) were made with LEGO pieces.

Please support the idea at the LEGO Ideas website.

Trying out a spacesuit. The gloves are made to measure and the legs and arms can be adjusted at will, but the torso is rigid and only comes in three sizes: M, L, and XL. I have been using an L, but it is a good idea to check that other sizes fit, just in case we need to do an emergency spacewalk. Here I tried out the XL (the M is way too small). Nothing is left to chance at space agencies! All the adjustments needed are noted by NASA people in detail and I will spend hours training in the Neutral Buoyancy Facility to get used to the setup. Working in a part-metal spacesuit is painful! Each astronaut adds protection to alleviate the pain, on the shoulders, hips, or legs. Although the suits come in three sizes, each astronaut adapts to their needs.

Spacesuit and Moonbuggy

The LEGO building instruction is available in Rebrickable.

This posable mech-size realistic spacesuit build was inspired by the latest spacesuits being developed in the United States. The spacesuit consists of the pressure garment assembly (PGA, so-called "suit") and Portable Life Support System (PLSS, so-called "backpack"). PGA provides pressure and mobility, while PLSS provides life-supporting functions such as oxygen supply, cooling, and CO2 removal.

This girl floats in space, wearing an imaginary spacesuit resembling a partial-pressure suit but with a large, full-pressure helmet.

A7LB : This spacesuit model was used during Apollo Missions 15, 16 & 17. It's presented here in its intravehicular configuration which is the way it was worn by the astronauts inside the capsule Apollo during take-off and return to Earth, according to the Cosmodome.

Special note about this pic.:

PRESSURIZED GLOVES : Custom-built, they were moulded for the hands of astronaut William ''Bill'' Anders (Apollo 8, replacement crew for Apollo 11).

N.B.: W. Anders (October 17, 1933 - June 07, 2024 - plane crash).

This genuine A7LB spacesuit is currently on display at the Cosmodôme (Camp Spatial Canada - Laval, Quebec, Canada).

Note spéciale à propos de cette photo :

“Jim McBarron, who oversees the design of spacewalk equipment for the shuttle program, stands between two of the spacesuits he has worked on. On the left is the Apollo spacesuit, worn by astronauts during that program. At right is the new spacesuit worn during spacewalks by shuttle astronauts. Apollo spacesuits were custom made; the new spacesuits are made of standard parts and fit better than ever.”
