In 1964 my late father, Beaudry Glen Pautz, accepted a job as Press Officer for the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa. It was the start of the Cold War "space race", the CSIR collaborated with the Americans and Beau received a lot of space programme material and press kits from NASA. I still have most of those historic documents in my collection. Here's a selection of them.

Also see this great piece on Time Magazine's special issue entitled "To the Moon and Back" published two weeks after the Apollo 11 landing. Back in 1969 I created a great scrapbook of the landing that I still treasure to this day.

The background drawing is of Yuri Gagarin taken from a screen capture of him of film in his space flight. I loved the rather grainy quality of it and thought I should try and sketch it with the Isograph. It proved a bit of a challenge, but I really do need to practice. Then I had a flight of fancy and produced this postage stamp design. I nicked the graphics from an old postage stamp. I wonder whether it would look good on a t-shirt.

With the B&W I applied a bit of edge blur to help create the 'historical' feel of times gone by.

A Black Knight rocket from the long-abandoned British Space Programme of the 50s and 60s. It does look rather like a hand-me-down from Thunderbirds :-)
