missions end recovering astronauts and their capsules from the ocean.
Later versions of the Sea King have carried the designation Marine One transporting the
President of the United States from the White House lawn to various locations.

My Dad was an audio engineer with C B S TV. He was the “go to” guy for all the difficult remote TV events. He worked closely with Walter Cronkite to get the sound “ just right” for TV viewers. This is a view of the CBS control room. My Dad is the guy in the back with a partially bald head and short sleeves. He was there for all the space launches ( and so many other amazing events). Walter Cronkite had a buzzer on his console that said “Sam”. My dad’s name was Sam Laine.

The voyage begins with President Kennedy's pronouncement on May 25, 1961, that the United States would put man on the moon before the decade was out, and continues through the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs.

I love Edu-Card games and have been looking for this set, reasonably priced, for ages. Found on Etsy. "Space Race Card Game," unabashedly biased, with "Sputnik" and "Friendly Satellite" cards, plus Pluto ('cause Pluto was a planet in those days). Copyright 1969.
I have a nice little collection of Space Race stuff--a small moon globe, some Viewmaster reels and some books.
Research on the largest and most famous rocket engine ever built began in 1953. A team of German scientists led by Dr. Wernher von Braun (1912–1977) developed the propulsion system needed to take America to the Moon from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
Part of a three stage design, the Saturn V stood 363 feet tall on the launch pad. Comparatively, that's sixty feet taller than the Statue of Liberty, and one foot shorter than St Paul's Cathedral in London. Once assembled on the crawler, the Saturn V cleared the doors of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) by only 6 feet when rolled out. Fully loaded, the rocket weighed in at 6.5 million pounds (3,000 metric tons) and contained over 3 million different parts.
These five first-stage (S-1C) engines were built by Boeing. Each is 138 feet tall, 33 feet in diameter, and provided over 7.64 million pounds of thrust to get the Saturn V through the first 36 miles of ascent - enough energy to light up all of New York City for 75 minutes. They are arranged in a cross pattern; the center engine being fixed while the four outer engines could be hydraulically gimbaled to control the rocket.
This Saturn V is one of the largest of the official National Historic Landmarks in the United States; it has been on display at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center since June 1969. This is the most complete of the three remaining rockets; the other two are located in the Johnson Space Center and the Kennedy Space Center.

WIKIPEDIA INFO CUT: Cooper was launched into space on May 15, 1963, aboard the Mercury-Atlas 9 (Faith 7) spacecraft, the last Mercury mission. He orbited the Earth 22 times and logged more time in space than all five previous Mercury astronauts combined—34 hours, 19 minutes and 49 seconds—traveling 546,167 miles (878,971 km) at 17,547 mph (28,239 km/h), pulling a maximum of 7.6 g (74.48 m/s²). Cooper achieved an altitude of 165.9 statute miles (267 km) at apogee. He was the first American astronaut to sleep not only in orbit but on the launch pad during a countdown.[1]
"Spam in a can"[edit]
Like all Mercury flights, Faith 7 was designed for fully automatic control, a controversial engineering decision which in many ways reduced the role of an astronaut to that of a passenger, and prompted Chuck Yeager to describe Mercury astronauts as "Spam in a can".
Toward the end of the Faith 7 flight there were mission-threatening technical problems. During the 19th orbit, the capsule had a power failure. Carbon dioxide levels began rising, and the cabin temperature jumped to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38°C). Cooper fell back on his understanding of star patterns, took manual control of the tiny capsule and successfully estimated the correct pitch for re-entry into the atmosphere. Some precision was needed in the calculation, since if the capsule came in too steep, g-forces would be too large, and if its trajectory were too shallow, it would shoot out of the atmosphere again, back into space. Cooper drew lines on the capsule window to help him check his orientation before firing the re-entry rockets. "So I used my wrist watch for time," he later recalled, "my eyeballs out the window for attitude. Then I fired my retrorockets at the right time and landed right by the carrier."[5][6] Cooper's cool-headed performance and piloting skills led to a basic rethinking of design philosophy for later space missions. The Mercury Seven were the group of seven Mercury astronauts selected by NASA on April 9, 1959. They are also referred to as the Original Seven or Astronaut Group 1. They piloted the manned spaceflights of the Mercury program from May 1961 to May 1963. These seven original American astronauts were Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Gordon Cooper, and Deke Slayton. Alan Shepard was the second person and the first American to travel into space. Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first person to travel into space.
The story of the macho, seat-of-the-pants approach to the space program of the Mercury astronauts and the equally fearless approach of test pilot Chuck Yeager was the basis of a book by Tom Wolfe (1979) and a movie by Philip Kaufman (1983). Was it really 40 years ago that Apollo 11 landed on the Sea of Tranquillity, and man first walked on the moon? I know I am not the only person asking myself that question today.
I was 17 and looking forward to beginning my senior year in high school. I had my own car, and had just purchased my first television set that I kept in my room (which was painted black and decorated with posters that glowed under black light). Life was good.
Most of my friends and I knew this date - July 20, 1969 - was one that we would always remember. After dinner that night, I borrowed my mom's Rolleiflex camera (which is sitting in front of me as I write this) so I could take pictures of the moonwalk off the television. I remember being tuned to CBS watching Walter Cronkite describe the landing of the lunar module earlier that afternoon, and talking about the historic event we were about to witness.
As the moment approached - which was just before 10 p.m. CDT, I turned off the lights in my bedroom and, holding the camera, took the five photographs seen here beginning with "Armstrong On Moon" and ending with President Nixon's very long distance phone call to Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. The images are grainy and not very high contrast, but that's the way things were back then. I just feel fortunate to have been at an age where I could appreciate the importance of the moment, and to have these photos as a personal record of that very special day.

Space Shuttle Enterprise (OV-101) arrives in New York, NY at John F. Kennedy International Airport atop the modified NASA Boeing 747-100. The Enterprise will become the cornerstone exhibit at the USS Intrepid Air, Sea, and Space Museum on the Hudson River in Manhattan.
In transit on its final mission, on its way through Los Angeles toward the shuttle's final resting place at the California Science Center -
