Chaïm Soutine was a Jewish, expressionist painter from Belarus. He has been interpreted as a forerunner of Abstract Expressionism. From 1910–1913 he studied in Vilnius at the Vilna Academy of Fine Arts. In 1913 he emigrated to Paris, where he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts under Fernand Cormon. He soon developed a highly personal vision and painting technique. For a time, he and his friends lived at La Ruche, a residence for struggling artists in Montparnasse, where he became friends with Amedeo Modigliani. Modigliani painted Soutine's portrait several times.

 

In 1923, the American collector Dr. Albert C. Barnes visited his studio and immediately bought 60 of Soutine's paintings. In February 2006, the oil painting of the series 'Le Boeuf Ecorche' (1924) sold for a record £7.8 million ($13.8 million) to an anonymous buyer at a Christies auction held in London - after it was estimated to fetch £4.8 million.

 

Soutine produced the majority of his works from 1920 to 1929. He seldom showed his works, but he did take part in the important exhibition The Origins and Development of International Independent Art held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in 1937 in Paris, where he was at last hailed as a great painter. Soon thereafter France was invaded by German troops. As a Jew, Soutine had to escape from the French capital and hide in order to avoid arrest by the Gestapo. He moved from one place to another and was sometimes forced to seek shelter in forests, sleeping outdoors. Suffering from a stomach ulcer and bleeding badly, he left a safe hiding place for Paris in order to undergo emergency surgery, which failed to save his life. On August 9, 1943, Chaim Soutine died of a perforated ulcer.

Bartabas: Golgota

 

Acclaimed equestrian theatre artist Bartabas returns to the Sadler’s Wells stage accompanied by contemporary flamenco dancer Andrés Marín, four horses and a donkey, to present the UK Premiere of Golgota. 14-21 March.

Cagnes-sur-Mer French Riviera

is a common presenting the form of a well-wooded and park-covered urban settlement in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region in southeastern France. Economically it forms a suburb to the city of Nice.

It is the Largest suburb of the city of Nice and lies to the west-southwest of it, about 15 km (9.3 mi) from the center. It is a town with no high rise buildings with PARTICULARLY Many woods and parks, as to MOST icts of urban homes, in the Alpes-Maritimes department in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur

It was the retreat and final address of the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Who Moved there in 1907 in an Attempt to Improve His arthritis, and Remained up to His death in 1919. In the late 1920s, Cagnes-sur-Mer est devenu a residence for Many renowned American literary and art figures, Such as Kay Boyle, George Antheil and Harry and Caresse Crosby. Author Georges Simenon (1903-1989), creator of the fictional detective Commissioner Jules Maigret Lived at 98, mounted of the Village in the 1950s with His third wife and Their three children; initial his "S" may still be seen in the wrought iron on the stairs.

 

Belarusian-French artist Chaim Soutine created Powerful, fanciful landscapes of southern France. A friend of Amedeo Modigliani, Soutine left colorful landscapes from Cagnes from 1924 on. Fauvist painter Francisco Iturrino aussi resided in the town Where he deceased.

En 1925, dans son atelier de la rue Saint Gothard à Paris, près de Montparnasse, Soutine se lance dans une suite de peintures d’animaux morts. Parallèlement à la fameuse série de "Bœufs écorchés", il brosse une série de volailles plumées ou à demi-plumées. Elles ne sont pas simplement posées mais pendues par le cou ou les pattes, figées, le bec grand ouvert dans les derniers spasmes de leur agonie. Les toiles sont très frappantes et même angoissantes. Les bœufs écorchés renvoient aux célèbres toiles du grand peintre hollandais Rembrandt (1606-1669). Les volailles suspendues, quant à elles, évoquent le rituel du Kippourah, qui a lieu la veille de la fête juive du Yom Kippour ou Grand Pardon. Soutine y avait assisté durant son enfance en Biélorussie.

 

Ici, la composition tout en déséquilibre et le fond sombre mettant en valeur la volaille morte renforcent l’intensité dramatique de la scène. Le corps étiré du dindon s’oppose en diagonale au crochet du vasistas (petite fenêtre du toit) auquel il est suspendu. Il est lacéré de touches rouges et jaune vif. Ses pattes recroquevillées et les plumes ébouriffées de son cou dénoncent la violence de la mort tout comme son bec ouvert. De quelques détails, le peintre a créé une œuvre forte à l’atmosphère pesante (cf. musée de l'Orangerie).

Martin Johnson Heade

American, 1819-1904

Martin Johnson Heade trained in Pennsylvania with folk artist Edward Hicks, but he developed his landscape style to be consistent with that of Hudson Valley painters living near his studio in New York City. He became known for his striking yet clear images of Brazil resulting from a trip in 1863. This approach, combining the dramatic, Romantic style of landscape artists with the microscopic clarity of naturalists and botanist artists, is apparent in this view based on his stop in Jamaica. This large painting was commissioned by oil magnate Henry Morrison Flagler to hang in the upper rotunda of his enormous resort, the Hotel Ponce de Leon, in St. Augustine, Florida, known today as the Lightner Museum.

Pissarro to Picasso: Masterworks on Loan from the Kirkland Family Collection

 

Thanks to the generosity of the Kirkland family of Los Angeles, visitors to the Portland Art Museum will be able to enjoy fourteen art treasures from the family’s collection, many of which have not been publicly displayed for decades. The works span nearly a century, from the monumental 1887 canvas of Jamaica by Martin Johnson Heade, to Marc Chagall’s 1975 The Betrothed, these works follow the revolutionary changes in art in Europe and the United States. Two still lifes by Pablo Picasso trace the shift from the astonishing 1912 debut of cubism with La Glace (bowl of ice cream) to its mature form in 1938.

 

The landscape form transmutes from Heade’s highly detailed canvas to Claude Monet’s light-filled Impressionist masterpiece Banks of the Seine River near Vétheuil, to Chaim Soutine’s blood-red expressionist 1918 Southern Landscape. Also included are rare landscapes by Henri Matisse and Georgia O’Keeffe, and a stunning scene of lovers floating in the night sky by Chagall based on stories in Thousand and One Nights. The Portland Art Museum is grateful to be able to exhibit these artworks during the Monet to Matisse: French Moderns exhibition, providing a number of provocative parallels to the treasures on loan this summer from the Brooklyn Museum.

Follows is the description of the installation.

 

O’ wise King—How long will you last?

 

This installation is a sort of morality play.

 

The seed for the work is Macbeth, though it is not necessarily a literal interpretation of the work. The moral of the piece is the impermanence of power, and the dangers of ambition. The viewer is presented with the past, the present and the future represented by the slaughtered king, Macbeth and the throne, which they are encouraged to take.

 

The slaughtered beef is the past king, a reference to the crucifixion, and a nod to Rembrandt and Soutine and their representations of slaughtered beef. The cube in the piece is symbolic of the slaughterhouse and is a reference to Francis Bacon. The cowbirds flying around the space are indicative of the continuous overturn of power as they search for the next steer on which to land.

 

Macbeth stands atop the slaughtered king, holding a rag to his mouth as he can’t stand the smell of his own actions. Lady Macbeth wraps herself around the king, like the snake in the Garden of Eden. Atop her head sits the prince she always craved. For the royal couple their innocence is lost as they gain knowledge of the consequence of their ambition. In he suitcase to the left of the queen is a garden that will like everything else will fade with the changing season. The flowers in the suitcase are symbolic of wisdom, kingdom and time.

 

As for the future king, the throne awaits. It is built of crates, its support structure full of gaps, like the gaps in wisdom.

In February 2006, the oil painting of the series 'Le Boeuf Ecorche' (1924) sold for a record £7.8 million ($13.8 million) to an anonymous buyer at a Christies auction held in London - after it was estimated to fetch £4.8 million.

 

Soutine produced the majority of his works from 1920 to 1929. He seldom showed his works, but he did take part in the important exhibition The Origins and Development of International Independent Art held at the Galerie nationale du Jeu de Paume in 1937 in Paris, where he was at last hailed as a great painter. Soon thereafter France was invaded by German troops. As a Jew, Soutine had to escape from the French capital and hide in order to avoid arrest by the Gestapo. He moved from one place to another and was sometimes forced to seek shelter in forests, sleeping outdoors. Suffering from a stomach ulcer and bleeding badly, he left a safe hiding place for Paris in order to undergo emergency surgery, which failed to save his life. On August 9, 1943, Chaim Soutine died of a perforated ulcer.

Cagnes-sur-Mer French Riviera

It was the retreat and final address of the painter Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Who Moved there in 1907 in an Attempt to Improve His arthritis, and Remained up to His death in 1919. In the late 1920s, Cagnes-sur-Mer est devenu a residence for Many renowned American literary and art figures, Such as Kay Boyle, George Antheil and Harry and Caresse Crosby. Author Georges Simenon (1903-1989), creator of the fictional detective Commissioner Jules Maigret Lived at 98, mounted of the Village in the 1950s with His third wife and Their three children; initial his "S" may still be seen in the wrought iron on the stairs.

 

Belarusian-French artist Chaim Soutine created Powerful, fanciful landscapes of southern France. A friend of Amedeo Modigliani, Soutine left colorful landscapes from Cagnes from 1924 on. Fauvist painter Francisco Iturrino aussi resided in the town Where he deceased.

Le thème de l’arbre est très présent dans la peinture de Soutine. Plusieurs auteurs ont souligné qu'il pourrait tenir ce culte de la région de forêts où il a grandi et où les arbres étaient fêtés dans des rites traditionnels. Dans cette toile, l’arbre est au tout premier plan, masquant à demi le regroupement d’habitations que l’on aperçoit derrière lui. Il masque également presque entièrement le ciel bleu. Le tronc couché, probablement par la force répétée du vent, créé un mouvement de diagonale ascendante et les mouvements du feuillage achèvent l’impression de vivacité qui se dégage de la composition. Ce paysage a été peint à Cagnes dans le Midi de la France et fait partie d’une série détaillant un ensemble de maisons étagées sur une colline caché par un grand arbre au premier plan. Ce thème de l’arbre sz retouve par la suite à d’autres moments de sa carrière. En 1929, où il donne plusieurs versions de l’Arbre de Vence, un frêne gigantesque au tronc enserré dans un banc. Mais l’arbre tient également une place particulière jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, dans des paysages qu’il peint à Chartres ou encore à Champigny (cf. Paul Guillaume et Domenica Walter, musée de l'Orangerie).

Born to a once-prosperous Jewish merchant family in Italy, Amedeo Modigliani grew up in a cultured but financially strained environment in Livorno. A severe bout of pleurisy ended his formal schooling at age fourteen, and he was plagued by poor health for the rest of his short life; he died of tuberculosis at age thirty-five. From 1902 to 1906, Modigliani studied painting with the Italian artist Guglielmo Micheli (a proponent of plein-air painting) and visited Capri, Naples, Florence, Venice, and Rome. In 1906, he moved permanently to Paris, where he frequented artists' gatherings and became friends with other expatriate artists living in France, such as Chaim Soutine and Moïse Kisling. Modigliani was a prolific artist, producing some 420 paintings, innumerable drawings, and 31 sculptures between 1906 and 1920.

The artist is best known for the works created in Paris between 1915 and 1919—portraits, in which a few telling details achieve a striking likeness, and nudes. His celebrated series of nude reclining women, begun in 1916, continues the tradition of depictions of Venuses from the Renaissance to the nineteenth century, but with one significant difference: the eroticism of the earlier figures is always couched in a mythological or anecdotal context, whereas Modigliani dispenses with this pretext. Consequently, his women appear unabashedly frank and provocative. The two dozen or so figures in the series—never his mistresses or friends but always professional models—lie on a dark bed cover that accentuates the glow of their skin; they are seen close-up and usually from above. Their stylized bodies span the entire width of the canvas, and their hands and feet often remain outside the picture frame. Sometimes asleep, they most often face the viewer, as does this gracefully built model in one of the artist's most famous paintings of the series.

Dans ce paysage, la route monte en ligne droite en respectant les lignes de fuites. Un personnage qui marche en son centre accentue l’effet de perspective. On distingue deux autres personnages sur un chemin à droite. Les couleurs restent naturelles : vert de la végétation, ocre des chemins et rouge des toitures. Faut-il voir un potager dans les taches vertes et rouges en bas à droite ? Cependant les maisons du second plan sont inclinées vers la gauche selon un système de basculement qui devient récurent durant la période de Céret (1919-1922). Michèle Bundorf le rapproche de La Maison blanche du musée de l’Orangerie pour proposer la date de 1933). Colette Giraudon penche également pour une date postérieure au séjour à Cagnes. La facture, notamment le traitement des arbres, semble cependant plus proche de celle des œuvres peintes en région parisienne dans les années 1917-1919 que de celles peintes à Chartres dans les années 30, avec une pâte plus épaisse et des tonalités plus sombres (cf. Paul Guillaume, Domenica Walter, musée de l'Orangerie).

"While artistic movements, some of them originating in Paris, made waves throughout Europe – Cubism, Futurism, Dada and Surrealism – Soutine remained relatively unimpressed by these ramifications of modernism and instead cultivated a distinctive, highly intense painting of his own, informed with an unprecedented degree of profound and palpable emotion. His pictures are freighted with the tension of collapsing perspective and hyperbolically distorted figuration, reinforced by a powerful, gestural brushstroke. The revolutionary potential inherent in this painting exerted an influence well into the 20th-century and was a seminal force in the work of artists like Francis Bacon or Willem de Kooning.

 

Paradoxically, Soutine is as much a visionary as he is a traditionalist: he was quite indifferent to one of the greatest achievements of modernism, the freedom of subject matter; he maintained an unwavering, lifelong devotion to the triad of still life, landscape and portrait. There is, in fact, not a single subject in Soutine’s art for which one could not find a 17th-century model. It almost seems as if art historically sanctioned genres afforded him the security that he needed in order to venture into uncharted territory as a painter."
