Everybody knows the famous Chicago downtown skyline with the Sears tower and all, but on the southside of the city one finds a whole different kind of backdrop. With the Skyway bridge and Norfolk Southern's lift bridges over the Calumet River looming in the distance, a Belt Railway job pulls empties from KCBX into Commercial Ave. yard.
A quartet of ALCO/MLWs head north on the Carbondale Main, led by MHWA M420W 2045. Standing idle at the Delaware-Lackawanna shops is Depew, Lancaster & Western RS11 1804, which has spent over a decade on the D-L. The D-L has recently broken ground at Green Ridge to begin construction on a new shop facility.
A concrete warehouse rises into the sky in Dallas’ Cedars neighborhood on the south side of Downtown.

An afternoon PEA102 local works in the Houston Industrial District, a collection of customers off the Mykawa Sub main in south Houston.
I had believed that trailing Santa Fe-paint GP60 #174 was in the lead, and even though it wasn't, I stuck around to grab this shot in a very un-documented nook of the city.

Southside on a summer evening - in June, even after the sun has gone down, we get a very long, extended "fairy" twilight, and our skies really don't get dark. This was just taken with the phone camera as I was waiting on the bus home, about 10.30 at night. Scotland isn't in the land of the midnight sun, but we do overlook their front garden...
NS 18W with N&W Heritage Motor 8103 Leading passes one of two trestles near Henry, Va. on the former N&W Shenandoah Division from Hagerstown, Md. to Winston-Salem, N.C.
UP's local south from Lesperance Street Yard in St. Louis down to Riverside and DeSoto (LSE57) has it's daily routine held up by the largest steam locomotive in all the land. UP Big Boy #4014 swings around the big curve at Davis Jct on the south side of St. Louis on a day trip from St. Louis to Poplar Bluff, MO.
LSE57 holds short of the switch on the Lesperance Lead - an industrial track that comes nearly straight south. 4014 is running on the Oak Hill Branch which is a winding route through the west side of St. Louis that intersects the UP Jefferson City Sub at Iron Mountain Jct / Grand Ave (using a short piece of former Frisco to bridge the gap). These two lines allow for trains coming north on the DeSoto Sub to head east or west once reaching St. Louis.
