Subject(s): Herbert Mathew KANE
Date: c. 1910
Location: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Photographer: unknown
Source: You may read the Chicago Tribune article (photograph source) HERE. The original source was unknown to me when I published this on 03 Jun 2022. After not visiting Herbert's Find A Grave memorial (which I manage) for some time, I found that a wonderful Find A Grave member had uploaded it to his memorial page. Thank you, Angel_Love! Later that night I was searching Newspapers.com and this photograph showed up in a Chicago Tribune article that featured Herbert. Turns out I had found the article on Fold3 back in 2012 but they had only a PORTION of the article. And the missing part included the hero's photograph! 04 Jun 2022: I was able to replace the original low resolution image with an edited high resolution one.
Relationship to me: great-granduncle

Notes: Herbert sure was handsome! I'm only guessing WHEN this photo was taken based on his appearance and when it was published in an article: 1910.
Herbert was born in Wheaton, DuPage, Illinois on 05 Sep 1875. He was the sixth of twelve children. He grew up to be a conductor on the Illinois Central Railroad, the same company his father, James KANE, was a line foreman for for decades. He married Melvina LaCHANCE on 12 Aug 1898. They had three sons: Herbert Jr., who was killed by a horse cab at six years of age; Clifford, born in 1900; and Howard, born in 1908. On 02 Jun 2022, I found FOUR newspaper articles proclaiming Herbert was the "Sheik of the South Shore," and that he was "vamping pretty suburbanites and chorus girls."
Those articles and much more are located in the KANE FAMILY DOCUMENTS ALBUM.
