The Macro Mondays theme for today, 9/6, is candy. This is a jolly rancher sour gummy. It’s in pretty close- since the gummy is about an inch long; i used a clip-on macro lens. Am liking this because the sugar crystals show up and also form the bokeh.....

But i also like the experiment fail, next in the photostream. i thought it would be cool to "tie-dye" a piece of cotton candy, using food coloring-- but dissolved it right quick ~grin~... who knows --when i wake up in the morning, i may decide to use the experiment one ~~giggling~~

For todays theme I took a slice of a lime and attached it to my kitchen window... quite tricky though - I finally took Scotch tape. You can still see tiny lines going across the lime.

A bit of cloud iridescence, appears in thin clouds over Sour Lake on the Mud Volcano trail on the edge of Yellowstone National Park’s Hayden Valley. Sour Lake is a thermal lake fed by hot springs. The pastel colors in the cirrus clouds, called cloud iridescence, or irisation, appears when sunlight is diffracted through small drops of water or ice that make up the clouds. Each tiny droplet deflects the light individually. Although this iridescence may remind the observer of rainbow the two phenomena have different causes. A rainbow appears when light is refracted by moisture in the atmosphere. This refraction breaks the light down into a visible spectrum creating a rainbow.

Cloud iridescence, on the other hand, appears when the suns ray are deflected (ie; bent or distorted) as they pass through the tiny water droplets. The iridescent spots appear behind the clouds such as the cirrus clouds in this photo. Cloud iridescence tends to be short-lived but on this day it persisted for 15 minutes while I walked up the trail the Sour Lake.

Mondays aren't always the most beloved days and many can be quite sour. So I was quite happy for this Macro Mondays theme, i knew where to find a rather sour individual for today's photo session.

With a 6:30 train on Strasburg’s schedule at this time of year, I headed over to Carpenter’s Cemetery to get the classic shot. There was a sizable herd of Holsteins grazing adjacent to the tracks, next to where the coaches are in the photo. As the 475’s exhaust became louder, the majority of the herd galloped to open spaces to the left of this frame. The seven remaining waited until the train popped out of the tree tunnel, and the only means of escape was up the hill between two fences, and away they went. I don’t remember ever seeing the cows along the Strasburg being so spooked, as they have always seemed to be used to the sounds. This was too interesting to pass up, so the cemetery shot will have to wait for another day.
