Sounds of the Guitar

+ 1 in comments

Doubtful Sound, New Zealand, by moonlight. The ship had shut down its diesel engines for the night and the wind had ceased. The only sounds were of dolphins slapping the water and calling to each other with that high pitched haunting resonance they make. It was magical.

This has been reedited.

Over the last few weeks I’ve squeezed every possible spare moment to get out in the snow. now usually in the uk the snow only lasts for a couple of days and that’s your entire winters helping, so every time I’ve gone out over the last few weeks I’ve really savoured the experience, viewing it as my last of the season. This way of approaching photography can be problematic, as it places deeper expectations on you not to waist the opportunity, but ironically helps you deeper appreciate the moment. Anyway, it has made me get out more than I would usually, and as it seems, more than your usual amount of photographers have been wondering around, wide eyed, like kids in a candy shop...

So what is it about snow that is so special? Everything just looks just so fresh, clean, unspoilt and different to normal. I love the crunching sounds fresh snow makes when you walk through it, I love the smiles on kid’s faces, I love the way it stimulates my inner child. I love the way light changes, reflects, the unusual subtle hues in the sky after sunset. I love the rawness, the coldness, the innocence...it just makes me want to live in an icy country...

Anyway, talking of snow, sadly due to the adverse conditions I’ve had to amend the Malham workshop this Sunday to Bolton Abbey . It’s ironic that the weather that is most treasured by landscape photographers, has rendered the workshop unsafe. Anyway I’m looking forward to visiting lower Wharfedale again, but this time to help others realise their vision(o:

Sorry, i could not get rid of all the dust.

HMM everyone :)

By chance we recently ended up in a snowy forest. Just on our own with hardly any sounds around us. The snow dampened everything even more. It was not too easy taking pictures there - most of them far too busy. So naturally I focused on some quiet details.

Don't you wonder sometimes

About sound and vision?

Blue, blue, electric blue

That's the colour of my room

Where I will live

Blue, blue

Pale blinds drawn all day

Nothing to do, nothing to say

Blue, blue

I will sit right down

Waiting for the gift of sound and vision

And I will sing

Waiting for the gift of sound and vision

Drifting into my solitude

Over my head

Don't you wonder sometimes

About sound and vision?

I like the quiet, I cannot imagen the constant sounds of war all around you, especially if your a child.

inspired by an historical account of the sound of war

They go with a hundred different sounds through the air, according to the shape, size, and velocity of the projectile. Two strike the bank. It is like two quick blows of a whip-lash. That went overhead, sharp as the cut of a cimeter; another goes with a long moan, then drops into the earth with a ‘thud.’ It comes from some more distant point, and is nearly spent. A shot comes from some great gun in the rear—an earthquake report; then the groaning, shuddering rush of the shell, as if the air were sick and tired of them, and it was too much to be borne that they should be so constantly sent.”

Was in the sunroom the other day and heard a very distressed squirrel making that alarm cry they make when something is wrong.

Went to look out the window - finally spotted the squirrel up a tree just a few feet in front of me, but could not see anything in the yard, no stray cats or anything, which might have caused such an uproar.

Then I spotted it - our very own kitty, sunning in one of the windows in the back of the house! And apparently that window was just too close for comfort. Managed to get a shot of the squirrel in mid cry - which went on and on and on for quite a while, too.

East of Kyoto, paralleling the shore of Japan's largest lake, Lake Biwa, is the Keihan Otsu Line. Operated by private operator Keihan, this interurban railway stretches 14km through the suburbs of Otsu City, from the southern terminus of Ishiyamadera, to its northern at Sakamoto-hieizanguchi. Serving these suburban communities are a fleet of 2-car 600 and 700 Series EMUs. Here, Keihan 618 slowly negotiates the street running bit in Otsu as it nears the downtown station of Biwako-Hamaotsu.

For the "Culturally Curious", the artwork on the side of the 617 and 618 depicts the main characters for the Japanese anime "Sound! Euphonium". Set in Uji south of Kyoto, the anime follows the main characters of the fictional Kitauji High School Music Club, and its band experiences and struggles to improve to compete in regional ensemble band competitions. Keihan and Kyoto Animation partnered to apply the wrap to promote the theatrical OVA, and Season 3 of the series. Personal note: It's a good series, but too drama heavy for my liking. However, if you're a fan of Kyoto Animation, it's a worthwhile watch.

CRAZY TUESDAY

Theme : "Sound"

Two weeks into writing to amazing designers and (oh my god) I still can't believe that so many of them already said: "Yes of course!" (Having in mind that actually everybody said yes, the others simply didn't answer. Sounds even better, right?) Looking at some shops on Etsy, I didn't think in a million years that those people would actually trust me so much with their artwork.

This is what I want to do, working with creative people from all around the world, and I promise you with all the passion I've got:

I will do my very best! *Pinky promise*

Times are quite hard right now, but your encouraging messages and compliments on my work gave me such an uplift, everytime when this white number one on blue backround suddenly popped up, my heart jumped up and down and I felt like doing some cartwheels ..

I can't wait to hold the very first item in my hand, whether it will be some sort of jewelry, an amazingly detailed garment or a headdress slash headpiece, you have no idea how much I appreciate your trust. I really feel honoured, and already a little bit proud, because if my portfolio wasn't what it is today, it would have been a lot harder to crawl out of my comfort zone and ask for collabs. There is still a lot of self-confidence missing when it comes to photography, but I already feel so much better because of your support.

I'm so looking forward to meet some of you sometime next year in the UK, along with a couple of fellow photographers and models. Everytime I think about it I wish I could pack my suitcase right here and now. But as always: Haste makes waste. Thank you so much. ♥

The Sound of Silence

Song by Simon & Garfunkel

Hello darkness, my old friend

I've come to talk with you again

Because a vision softly creeping

Left its seeds while I was sleeping

And the vision that was planted in my brain

Still remains

Within the sound of silence

In restless dreams I walked alone

Narrow streets of cobblestone

'Neath the halo of a street lamp

I turned my collar to the cold and damp

When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light

That split the night

And touched the sound of silence

And in the naked light I saw

Ten thousand people, maybe more

People talking without speaking

People hearing without listening

People writing songs that voices never share

No one dared

Disturb the sound of silence

"Fools" said I, "You do not know

Silence like a cancer grows

Hear my words that I might teach you

Take my arms that I might reach you"

But my words like silent raindrops fell

And echoed in the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed

To the neon god they made

And the sign flashed out its warning

In the words that it was forming

And the sign said, "The words of the prophets

Are written on the subway walls

And tenement halls

And whispered in the sounds of silence"
