Unique tiny woodpecker with olive-yellow wings, brown-and-white striped head, and black-spotted white breast and belly. Other piculets in range look very different, being mostly unmarked. Call is an extremely high “tsik tsik tsik.” Drums very loudly for such a diminutive bird. Widespread, found in lowland and foothill forests, often in areas with bamboo stands. (eBird)
---------------
At four inches (10cm) in size, piculets can be hard to see, but this one picked a lovely sunny branch to sit on with a nice dark tree behind him to better show him off. He had been singing, which was how we had found him in the first place. A long way away, but again, this was the one opportunity we had to take photos (we did see one the day before, but that was it).

This species’ maddening song can be likened to the phrase “brain-FEVER,” which adequately describes what this bird gives birders trying to see one as it sings high up in the forest canopy. If seen well, note hawk-like appearance, with a long barred tail, brown upperparts, and patterned white underparts. Orangish flush on chest apparent in adults. Favors hill and montane forests when breeding; often found at lower altitudes and in forest edge and scrubby areas when migrating and on wintering grounds. (eBird)
----------------
There was much debate about the ID of this bird, with the two guides finally deciding that this was a juvenile Large Hawk-Cuckoo, which explained the lack of orange. It also refused to sing for us (although we had heard it elsewhere). I, for one, was hoping for another ID since I had seen an adult in India some years ago and would have liked to see a different Hawk-cuckoo. Oh well, we don't always get what we want.

Perky, long-legged songbird that winters in areas with dense understory coverage, often near wet areas; breeds in open taiga and highland forest clearings. Shy, tends to stay hidden. Pale brown above, whitish below, with olive-brown flanks and pale supercilium. Adult male has the namesake jewel-like red throat, bordered in black and white; younger male may have a hint of red, while female lacks red. Often droops wings and cocks tail upright. Variable melodic song consists of beautiful warbling and occasional mimicry; calls include low, hoarse “chuk” and high “chelee.” (eBird)
------------------
A small feeding station had been created at the side of the road where we waiting silently to see what might come out. Our patience was rewarded as the beautiful male rubythroat made an appearance in this dimly lit spot. His red throat glowed in the dark and it was clear that he was very well named.

Spectacular ground-dwelling pigeon with long, extravagant plumes trailing down from the neck. Dark green intermixed with gray, blue, and bronzy orange, depending on the light. Tail is snow-white, but only readily visible when the bird is flushed. Generally shy, quiet, and difficult to see. Inhabits small, densely forested offshore islands from the Indian Andamans to the Solomons and New Guinea. (eBird)
-----------------
One of the prime reasons for the trip to Thailand was to see this spectacular pigeon. I'd seen and admired them in zoos, but the thought of seeing one in the wild was just too compelling. We took a fast motorboat to the island (80 minutes offshore), stepped onto the beach and within minutes this bird strolled along right by our feet. By the end of the morning we had seen 10, including a pair on a nest. Apparently, they can be very difficult to see on other islands.

This common Eurasian species is a close relative of the House Sparrow. Slightly smaller than House Sparrow with entirely rufous cap, black and white cheek, and limited black in the throat. Males and females are similar. Typically found in noisy small flocks, often in more natural areas than concrete-loving House Sparrow; calls are often higher-pitched than those of House Sparrow, and has a slightly slower chatter. Feeds on seeds. Introduced to a small region in the central U.S. and southeast Australia. (eBird)
-----------------
These lovely sparrows are definitely more common than House Sparrows throughout Southeast Asia. I finally had a chance to take a nice photo of them. This one was sitting on a sculpture in a park in Ho Chi Minh City - a small oasis of peace in a very busy city.

Large elegant pearl-gray pigeon with dark wings. Inhabits mature forests in foothills and montane areas; can be found down to sea level in western India. Forages in upper levels of forest, often in small flocks. Flies powerfully over the canopy. Song is deep and resonant: “ouh-woOO WOO.” (eBird)
--------------------
A couple of fly-overs, a few coos, and then finally, a close look at this attractive pigeon. The soft colouring is reminiscent of the Rock Dove, but this is no feral pigeon. Much shyer than our city doves, it lends a hint of elegance to the forest.

The variable flying fox is native to islands in the Indo-Pacific region. Its range includes the Maldives, the Andaman Islands, the Nicobar Islands, Melanesia, the Philippines, Tioman Island, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. It is found at altitudes of up to about 900 metres (3,000 ft). In many parts of its range it roosts in small outlying islands and flies to larger bodies of land to forage at night.
Variable flying foxes feed mostly on the fruit of native and introduced trees but also consume flowers and nectar. The diet includes pawpaws, mangos, jambul, bananas, figs, flowers of the kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra) and the banyan, tree and flowers and fruits of cultivated crops. They consume about half their body weight each day. (Wikipedia)

In the tree next to the Large Hawk-Cuckoo was a large colony of these pretty little bats. Most were a reddish-brown but a few were grey like this one. They are well-named for their variably coloured fur.

Active and noisy inhabitant of foothill and highland forest. Brown with a gray head, white eyering, and a long black arc that extends from just above the bill to the back of the crown. Frequently joins mixed flocks, of which it is often a dominant member. Extremely similar in appearance to the closely related Huet’s and David’s Fulvettas; watch for a grayer throat and paler underparts in the former and an absent or near-invisible brow line in the latter. Song is a quick, sputtering burst of high notes that ends with a brief whistle. Calls are chattering rattles. (eBird)

We saw and heard these little charmers most days in the mountains of northern Thailand, but photographing them was another matter completely. Finally, this one showed up at a feeding station, drawn by the mealworms that we had put out to lure in some of the most skulky forest birds.

The Perseids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Swift–Tuttle. The meteors are called the Perseids because the point from which they appear to hail (called the radiant) lies in the constellation Perseus. (WiKi)...
