Sonoran Desert Sunset. Smoke filled atmosphere due to the wildfires on the west coast of the USA. No crop.
Winter scene in Arizona’s portion of Mexico's Sonoran Desert as seen on my television’s screen saver screen. It shows that the current temperature in Tucson, Arizona is well above the freezing point of 32 degrees F‼️
There has been no snow in the Sonoran desert around Tucson so far this winter! However, some snow is visible in the Catalina Mountains and the Rincon Mountains, both of which are visible from central Tucson.
The temps have struggled to get out of the 30s the last few days in Nevada County. We've also enjoyed a winter mix of rain, hail, and snow. A month ago, I was doing my rain dance, trying to petition the gods for rain. Now, I'm dreaming of wintering in the Sonoran Desert where the air is warm and the views are inspirational.

The saguaro is pointing to Weaver's Needle in the Superstition Mountains of Arizona. Photo was taken from the Arizona Trail. I thought it looked best in monochrome with the cloudless sky.

I am a midwestern guy who has never been to the Sonoran Desert near Tucson. Last week, I was immersed in all things desert in Arizona. The saguaro cactus and the landscape enthralled me.

arid plants, heat, and rocks
critters too

I thought this saguaro cactus was a nice specimen and the sun was just poking over the horizon, so I shut the aperture down to f22 to get me a starburst. This says Sonoran Desert to me
Sonoran Desert Sunset. Southwest of Tucson, Arizona USA. Flat Earth Sun - when clouds appear behind the Sun.
The phenomenon occurs because thinner clouds are transparent, and the light from the Sun or the Moon is relatively very bright. Our eyes and camera sensors are unable to distinguish the part of the Sun/Moon which is obscured by the thin clouds from the part which is unobstructed by clouds. Parts of the clouds outside the Sun/Moon disc are still visible, making it appears as if they are behind the Sun/Moon.

The sun rising over the Sonoran Desert, cacti in abundance. Lost Goldmine Trail outside Gold Canyon, Arizona.
The Sonoran Whipsnake (Masticophis bilineatus) is one of the longer snakes we have in Arizona with some reaching to about 6 feet in length. During the heat of the day, they have some serious speed as they dart across roadways, across trails, up hills, or into trees. This group of snakes is also known to offer up its services with delivering bites!
Seen on the outer loop trail, UTPB, Odessa TX.
In the eye you can sort of see my hands on the camera, which is resting on the paved trail. It was a cool morning, and he was very slow.

Sonoran Desert Tortoises (Gopherus morafkai) are living dinosaurs of the southwest's Sonoran Desert. This girl is another incidental find on a busy highway. She was carefully moved a good distance down a nearby wash with appropriate shelter to prevent re-occurrence on the highway. Thankful to have come across her before an unobservant driver did!
The late afternoon sun backlights a crowd of saguaro cactus west of Phoenix. Behind the cactus the creamy haze of the afternoon obscures the mountain background.
Monsoon clouds ignite into vibrant colors as the sun approaches the horizon.
The monsoon season always brings gorgeous sunsets with it when it arrives in Arizona each summer. This picture was taken on the Pima Canyon hiking trail as the sun was setting. The hilltop covered with saguaro cacti added a nice touch to this phenomenal summer sunset.
A forest of Saguaro cacti proliferates the landscape in the Sonoran Desert just outside of Tucson. These hearty cacti are the old souls of the desert, often living in the excess of 150 years. A fully grown cactus can contain over a thousand pounds of water, which makes them susceptible to toppling if they start to lean even a little bit. The arms which start to grow at the 40-50 year mark are thought to be nature's way of counterbalancing the load. The cactus are endemic to the Sonoran Desert, meaning you won't find them elsewhere. They thrive along the slopes in the special light and soil conditions of the desert here--so don't go trying to grow one at home--it won't work.
