Looking out of the back side of Hang En. If you look closely, at the bottom left (3/4 of the way down and about 1/4 in from the side) you'll see my wife's headlamp shining back. She provides a nice perspective for how enormous this cave's opening is.

It was 2013, and Courtney (my wife) and I were your typical, 30-something American couple. In respectable, 9-to-5 desk jobs, we were climbing the professional ladder, saving for a house, and talking about starting a family.
Instead, we quit their jobs, put everything into storage, and left our home in Washington, D.C., in search of adventure, personal fulfillment, and good eats. We spent a year motorcycling through Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand. We hiked the Himalaya in Northern India. We explored the outer reaches of Indonesia, drove across the empty quarter, and much more.

After two days of trekking and caving, we reach the first camp inside Hang Son Doong, the world's largest cave.
Best of October 2013
Hang Son Doong Cave, Vietnam
After two days of trekking, a group of cavers rests at the first camp inside Hang Son Doong in central Vietnam. Hidden in rugged Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park near the border with Laos, the 2.5-mile cave is part of a network of 150 or so caves, many still not surveyed, in the Annamite Mountains.

Looking out of the back of Hang En, we were only 1.5KM away from Hang Son Doong, the largest cave in the world. Hidden until 2009, Hang Son Doong has an even smaller entrance than Hang En. Our guide wouldn't let us continue farther down the river, and he ensured us that, even if we did, we'd never find the entrance.

Almost at the river's edge you get another perspective of just how massive this cave is. Center-left in the frame about 4/5 of the way down you can see my wife.

Every time I look at this photo I'm instantly transported back to Hang En. The beauty, enormity, and ruggedness of the place is astounding.

Looking in from the rear of the cave. The enormity of this place was incredible. It's amazing what water can accomplish if given enough time.

Toward the end of the trek on the way to Hang En you are afforded a view of the cave's "sky light." This is not the entrance we used, as the climb up to the opening is very steep. From here it is probably another half hour until you reach the entrance, which from this perspective is just outside the frame at the bottom right.

These green boulders littered the back side of Hang En. With nothing else in the frame, it's hard to gain a perspective on the size of these rocks. The two largest within this photo are the size of a small house.

It may be dusk outside, however, inside Hang En headlamps are running at full power.
