Artful Solutions: Pathways from Homelessness is a continuing effort to develop programs focusing on the needs of homeless populations. Last fall, the Armory offered a pilot version of the program, Families in Transition, in partnership with Union Station Homeless Services and the Pasadena Police Department’s HOPE team. In a series of workshops, individuals and families from various shelters throughout Pasadena, developed their drawing and painting skills to create works which were exhibited and sold at the Armory. The proceeds went directly to the participants.

So, the pink spool of ABS from Octave came with filament bulging out just past the edges of the spool... and during one long print this allowed the filament to wrap itself around the spindle, and then starve/jam the extruder.
I figured that this would be the answer, as it would insure that the filament would not be tempted to sneak off the spool.
Unfortunately, what it really did was increase the friction in the filament path. That mean two things, 1) less consistency in the output of the extruder, and 2) a build-up of plastic "filings" in the extruder feed pulley/gear. The "filings" would reduce the grip of the extruder and add to the consistency issue.
Merely cleaning the extruder wasn't sufficient to resolve the issue. I had to remove the gadget above.
Upon later examination, I believe that part of the issue is that the non-Makerbot spools do not slide as smoothly/effortlessly over the spool holders. So the friction is already significantly higher and then this device just adds more, and pushes it over the top. I did add another little washer inside the extruder to help it maintain a good grip after several incidents of it stripping and halting.
And incidentally while I was debugging all this I managed to put an allen wrench into the extruder fan and rip off about half the fan blades. :(

A mid 20th Century German made KAYanEE Sewmaster, toy sewing machine, that still works. There were a lot of different models made of the KAYanEE sewing machines sold both as a toy and as a quick repair machine for those that couldn't master a needle and thread. I don't see how those repairs could have worked though since it is a single thread chain-stitch machine, and the stitches pull out very easily.

PON (Passive optical network) based FTTH access network is a point-to-multipoint, fiber to the premises network architecture in which unpowered optical splitters are used to enable a single optical fiber to serve 32-128 premises. FTTH network exploits the low attenuation and high bandwidth of single-mode fiber to provide many times more bandwidth than currently available with existing broadband technologies.
Optical line terminal, optical splitters and optical network terminal/unit are the three components of FTTH access network
OLT (Optical Line Terminal)
The optical line terminal is the main element of the network and it is usually placed in the local exchange. It is the engine that drives FTTH system. Traffic scheduling, buffer control and bandwidth allocation are the most important functions of optical line terminal. Typically, OLT operates using redundant DC power and has at least 1 Line Card for incoming internet, 1 System Card for on-board configuration, and 1 to many GPON cards. Each GPON card consists of a number of GPON ports.
Optical Splitter
The optical splitter splits the power of the signal. That is to say, each fiber link entering the splitter may be split into a given number of fibers leaving the splitter. Usually, three or more levels of fibers correspond to two or more levels of splitters. This enables sharing of each fiber by many users. The passive optical splitter has the characteristics of broad operating wavelength range, low insertion loss and uniformity, minimal dimensions, high reliability, and supporting network survivability and protection policy.
ONT/ONU (Optical Network Terminal/Unit)
ONT/ONU is deployed at customer’s premises. It is connected to the OLT by means of optical fiber and no active elements are present in the link. In GPON, the transceiver in the ONT/ONU is the physical connection between the customer premises and the central office OLT.
The basic components of the GPON FTTH access network are presented and the contribution of each component to the architecture of the FTTH network is addressed. GPON FTTH network architecture is indeed reliable, scalable, and secure. It is a passive network, so there are no active components from the CO to the end user, which dramatically minimizes the network maintenance cost and requirements. FTTH is future proof solution for providing broadband services.
