I took a walk in the woods to clear my mind. There was a light that broke through the mist and gave me solutions...

When are we going to learn to live together in peace and understanding? Violence is NO solution. We need to share our space in this world together and make room for all of us to share with respect, friendship and love! There is NO ROOM for hate in this world, it just kills us all and creates never-ending pain and devastation. STOP the hate, START the love!!!

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

How many people can remember that red plastic container of bubble solution with the stick inside that you can blow through to make bubbles? This is thought I had when I rested my tripod on Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast.

The weight of the sky and all of its fabulous sunset glory was a perfect way to cap off an incredible day in the Pacific Northwest of the USA.

Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! ❤️❤️❤️

There is nothing I enjoy watching more through my macro lens than a film of bubble solution before it pops. The level of activity is quite amazing. It reminds me of psychedelic art during the 1960s counterculture. Groovy!

Na de foto met gele fronten werd er uiteraard ook nog een foto gemaakt langs de andere kant met de rode fronten.

CP empty grain train no.331 is on the pull out of Toronto after making a two car setoff as well as fuelling up the engines and swapping crews. Apparently the leader here had multiple defects reported, one of which being a broken bell button which was being held together by a band-aid. Paraphrasing, but the conversation on the scanner went something along the lines of this:

Crew: "so you want us to just go ahead when there's literally a band-aid holding this button in place? It's kind of disgusting"

West Tower: "That is correct, I'm sure the band-aid is there specifically to hold that button in place, not like it came off someone, the planner said to just go ahead and leave because he's unable to fix it here on the spot".

Never a dull moment around these parts.

Mýrdalssandur (Nootka lupine) 20210715

The human factor on the flora and vegetation of Iceland

The influence of Homo sapiens on the vegetation can be split in the effect of medieval Viking settlements and the more modern footprint of the human culture on the Icelandic vegetation. For one thing, the early Vikings destroyed most of the original birch forests. For more on this topic see vegetation types/forests. But even up to date one can question some of the farming practices in Iceland. The sheep culture is so deeply embedded in the Icelandic heritage that the erosion effects of these practices on the landscape are socially undebatable. Nevertheless, the Icelanders have become aware that something had to be done about erosion. One thing that was done - as so often all over the world - was not to address the real problem (erosion by overgrazing) but to find a quick solution. The idea was that a single species from Alaska, being the Nootka lupine (Lupinus nootkatesis - Lúpina) would solve the problem. It has been sown all along roadsides (where soil degradation is most apparent). And it has been successful, so successful that it grew to become monocultures giving no chance to indigenous species!

Residential block, built in 1926 to a design by Bureau Gulden and Geldmaker.

This block does have an unmistakable "Amsterdam School" appearance, especially due to the attractive corner solution.

Architects Gulden and Geldmaker excel in usually more sober designs, but they could indeed come up with expressive designs (amsterdamse-school.nl).

The Amsterdam School is a style of architecture that arose from 1910 through about 1930 in the Netherlands. The Amsterdam School movement is part of international Expressionist architecture, sometimes linked to German Brick Expressionism (Wp).

Everglades National Park

Dames Cave is a 1.2 mile moderately trafficked out and back trail located near Brooksville, Florida that features a cave and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

The Dames Cave area is located in the Citrus Tract portion of the Withlacoochee State Forest in Citrus County, Florida and are found on a western portion of the Brooksville Ridge physiographic region. This landscape is dominated by karst landforms including uvalas, dolines, solution valleys, and caves. Geologically, the caves are among the oldest in Florida.

The entrance trail to the Dames Caves is located off S Lecanto Hwy. Quite possibly there will be several cars already parked there, as these will be the only indicators that one of Florida's most unique and oldest cave systems is just a short jaunt off of this straight and narrow farm road. Parking is free, but is at your own risk, mainly because there are no designated parking spots. A short half-mile trail leads off into the Withlacoochee State Forest.

Once again, no trails are marked, but heading directly east will bring you to the opening of one of the most popular caves. Surrounded by several concrete posts and heavy gauge wire, the opening to Vandal Cave appears before your eyes. One of the best spot for pictures, this cave opening is actually an ancient roof collapse. Part of the roof is still connected and creates a land bridge that can be easily walked across by daring individuals. A small side cave allows access into the inner cave system. Once inside you can see why it is called Vandal Cave. Graffiti and other damage can be seen throughout, explaining why this cave system is so hard to find. Other smaller caves branch off from this Vandal Cave and range in a variety of difficulties of exploration from simple head ducking and flashlight exploring to belly-slinking and crawling through tight spots in the mud.

Brasov, Transylvania 2017

I'm frankly dismayed by the reaction to my previous images which feature a bare back. That some groups consider these images to be offensive enough to report me to the Flickr administrators and have my account marked as 'unsafe', speaks volumes about our cultural attitude towards the human body.

These images are not lured at all, but portray the body in a conspicuously artistic context that emphasises emotion - not something sexual. I have deliberated for years about how I might portray the human body in ways that are not typical of the (largely) masculine art tradition and struggled with a solution that could not be confused with popular culture.

I've worked closely with the women involved for years, establishing a creative partnership based on mutual trust and respect. These images were created in this context.

I hope those who found the images offensive, might reconsider their response in the light of this information and perhaps contemplate being more discerning in future of both the content and context of bodily portrayals - as opposed to a blanket ban that is indiscriminate and absolute in nature.

Justification of Red List category

This species is listed as Critically Endangered because its population has undergone a very rapid reduction, for reasons that are poorly understood but are likely to be at least partly due to hunting along the migration flyway; this decline is projected to continue and increase in the future. Fieldwork in Kazakhstan (and counts in Turkey and the Middle East) has shown the population to be substantially larger than previously feared, but recent demographic studies have found low adult survival, possibly largely driven by hunting pressure along the migration routes and wintering grounds.

By Jim Lawrence

BirdLife International, RSPB (BirdLife in the UK) and leading optics manufacturer Swarovski Optik have just launched a remarkable new interactive website The Amazing Journey which charts the migration of one of the world’s most threatened birds - Sociable Lapwing. The new website enables you to experience the birds' migration online and witness new discoveries as they happen. It also provides support to a large team of international scientists who are trying to prevent the species from becoming extinct. Following extensive research, nine Sociable Lapwings have been carefully fitted with tiny, state-of-the-art satellite transmitters, which will track their hazardous 5,000+ km journey from their breeding grounds in Kazakhstan to their non breeding areas in tropical Africa and other, as yet undiscovered, destinations. The Amazing Journey follows the adventures of Erzhan, Dinara, Svetlana and six other intrepid satellite-tagged lapwings as they fly south for the winter - dodging hunters with guns and falcons and the myriad other unknown threats that await them. Andreas Pittl – Head of the Nature Division at Swarovski said, “This is a hugely important and fascinating project which Swarovski Optik is proud to champion. Wildlife is threatened with extinction for many reasons so finding ways to help such a beautiful and inspiring creature as the Social Lapwing is an important conservation effort we are keen to support. We want to bring people and nature together so they can continue to enjoy brilliant, close-up views of birds like these for years to come.” Designed by online marketing experts Digital Spring, The Amazing Journey uses satellite data fed through Google map technology to keep pace with the birds. A mixture of clever, regularly updated maps and video and photo blog reports from the field will follow their progress. Relatively little is still known about the routes Sociable Lapwings take, so tracking them will provide vital information, enabling BirdLife scientists to monitor and protect the birds and unlock the mystery of their migration. Now, for the first time, those interested in birds, wildlife and conservation can sit alongside scientists, and learn about these extraordinary birds, their migration habits and their conservation. Dr. Paul Donald, the project’s Principal Conservation Scientist at RSPB said, “We are using the world’s smallest and latest satellite transmitter – weighing just 5 grams – to record this amazing journey. By engaging with people around the world and inviting them to see this fascinating migration happening live online we believe we can inspire them to play their part too.” As the Sociable Lapwings progress along a lengthy route through various countries they need to stop every now and again to ‘refuel’ along the way. As they do so they form big feeding flocks (which is how they get their name). Whenever they touch down, precise details of their location are picked up by satellites orbiting high overhead and sent to RSPB scientists. These locations are then passed on to conservation project partners in each of the countries the birds travel through. With detailed coordinates they can quickly locate the flocks of birds, wherever they’ve touched down and take action if they are threatened in any way. The Amazing Journey website will provide regular reports from these scientists in the field keeping us up to date with all the latest news on the birds’ progress. Jim Lawrence, Preventing Extinction Programme Manager at BirdLife International said, “Protecting migratory species on the brink of extinction like Sociable Lapwings can’t be done without the considerable support of BirdLife Species Champions like Swarovski and RSPB. The Amazing Journey website is a new window on our world where you can see BirdLife International Partners around the globe delivering co-ordinated international conservation solutions.” Main photo credit Maxim Koshkin - Conservation Project Leader ACBK.
