Playing games is the best time of your life, and the more games you get, the better it is.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

The first Thursday of the month is Game Day in our community. Some serious players around this table.

At four minutes past three in the afternoon of the sixth of February 1958 the plane carrying the Manchester United football team back to Manchester after a European cup tie crashed while trying to take off in Munich.

The shock felt in Manchester, and the wider country, was so profound that, to this day, it haunts the memory.

Mason Greenwood is 18 and there was an article about him in today's Times.

That shouldn't come as a surprise as there was an article about him in yesterday's Times, too. And the day before, and the day before that ... and ...

You get the picture. Mason may just be a special footballer.

Anthony Martial, a French football player. Martial is an enigma. He is fabulously talented, but will his performances match his gifts?

Ex-football player, now a TV pundit.

Bruno Fernandes, a Portuguese footballer

Roger William Byrne (8 September 1929 – 6 February 1958)

Captain of both England and Manchester United at the time of his death in the Munich Air Disaster.

That the crash was a disaster for Manchester United is well known, but what is easily overlooked was the impact on the England national team.

Byrne was the captain of England. Duncan Edwards and Tommy Taylor were both current internationals and also died in the crash

Marcus Rashford

For those who don't know the story.

The government had decided to remove the free school meals for poor children over the summer holidays. (There are two sides to the rightness of this)

Marcus Rashford argued for humanity in the case of these children. His arguments were calm, measured and in using his own childhood's experience, persuasive.

He captured the popular mood and virtually everyone, apart from the government, could see the basic goodness in his case.

Soon the groundswell became unstoppable and the government performed a shuddering U turn - poor children will be fed this summer.

Rashford turned out to be more than simply a northern footballer.

Humanity.

.........................................

I so skilful I can keep this up here all day......

Personally I can't decide who is better. Cristiano is on fire at the minute(season 07/08), scoring with every kind of goal from every angle and tricks to bamboozle the finest of defenders. Wayne has always been brilliant, right from the very start everyone could see he was special. If you had to rely on one player and only 1 player I think you'd want Wazzer there as he has Man Utd red running through his once blue veins.

20/10/08 Wayne Rooney has scored 8 goals in 6 games for club and country, an impressive tally...

He plays on the left,

He plays on the right.

That Boy Ronaldo,

Makes England look shite!

I saw my mate the other day,

He said to me, he'd seen the white Pele,

So I asked, "Who is he?"

He goes by the name of Wayne Rooney.

Wayne Rooney, Wayne Rooney, goes by the name of Wayne Rooney.

22/01/09 I think it is about 12 - 9 in favour of Christiano at the moment - he seems to be ahead in this competiton... is he deservedly so and why?

John Connelly, Bobby Charlton, Harry Gregg, Pat Crerand, Matt Busby, David Herd, Nobby Stiles, Denis Law, Tony Dunne, George Best, Shay Brennan and Bill Foulkes have a gander at Henry The Navigator while taking in the Lisbon Atlantic air, the morning of the return leg of their 1966 QF European Cup tie against the mighty Benfica. Before kick-off Eusebio was presented with the 1965 European Footballer of Year award. The Black Pearl didn't get much of a look in after the final whistle though - Europe had just found a new super star. And his name was George. Understandably, Matt Busby was a little edgy about the 3-2 lead United brought into the tie and requested his players keep it tight early doors. The lads obliged - for a full six minutes, when George Best headed in from a Tony Dunne cross. This was the cue for United to go on the rampage as Best ran the Portugese ragged with his lightening quick pace and mesmerising dribbling ability. Best scored his and United's second after a fabulous run in the twelfth minute and United went on to crush the Lisbon men 5-1. The Estadio da Luz had just witnessed it's first ever home defeat in European football. George returned to Manchester the next day wearing a sombrero and was christened 'El Beatle'. He became front page news across the continent, a privilege he both enjoyed and endured until his death in November 2005.
