The Falls captures everyone's attention as it should. This unique waterfall splits into 3 or 4 channels (in comments). But I found the lush chasm it created right after it's plunge beautiful as well. One of Olympic National Park's many treasures.

Thanks for taking a look. Always appreciated!

One of the many fine perspectives of this unique 3-pronged waterfall.

"Sol Duc Falls is by most accounts one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Washington State and by proxy is one of the most sought out waterfalls by photographers - and chances are it ranks favorably nationwide in similar comparisons. Set within the thick temperate rain forest of the Olympic Mountains, the Sol Duc River creates one of the more uniquely shaped waterfalls in the northwest where it splits into as many as four channels - depending on the volume of the river - hurtling 37 feet off the side of a cliff into a narrow canyon, followed by an 11 foot flume-style drop as the river exits the canyon into a broader gorge below.

Prior to 1991 the accepted spelling of all features bearing this name was Soleduck (sometimes spelled Solduck as well). The Washington State Board of Geographic Names approved the change to Sol Duc because of its more accurate translation from the Quillayute word, meaning "magic waters", from which it derives. A legend tells of two dragons, Sol Duc and Elwha, who fought to a draw and were sealed in deep caverns. They wept hot tears at their confinement which furnishes the water for Olympic and Sol Duc Hot Springs."

Planning on seeing it again this September. Can't wait!

Enjoy a wonderful weekend!

Sol Duc Falls splits into three falls over two large boulders and then meet again at the bottom of the canyon.

Next time I'm here I'll try it with a tripod. Definitely plan on returning.

Have a wonderful Wednesday!

Leaving the eagles, I dodged north to Sol Duc Falls in Olympic National Park, then continued along the coast southward to make my way to Sea Ranch, California where I was meeting friends. I've attached a couple of images from Sol Duc and one from Cannon Beach where I was just barely lucky enough to reach in time for a gorgeous sunset.

Sol Duc translates from the Quillayute word, meaning "magic waters." That it is.

Enjoy a wonderful weekend!

Just back from a fantastic trip to the Pacific Northwest! My wife and I hiked in the North Cascades, Olympic, and Mount Rainier National Parks! This image was taken in Olympic National Park. This stream feeds into Sol Duc Falls.

The term "Sol Duc rainforest" refers to the temperate rainforest in the Sol Duc Valley area of Olympic National Park, Washington. This area is famous for the Sol Duc Falls

I wanted something green today.

A slice of the trail to/from Olympic National Park's Sol Duc Falls on a rainy day. Green it was.

Have a terrific Thursday

My daughter Hannah had never been to the Sol Duc forest, so my son Cole and I decided to head north and treat her to the beauty of the area. In the photograph above, she stands on the rustic old footbridge that was put in place in the 1930's. Sol Duc Falls was showing off with some good water flow yesterday, especially after some of the abundant rains that we have been entertaining as of late.

We all had a fun day of hiking!

Using a half-second exposure of Sol Duc Falls I captured this rainbow as the sunlight first hit the forest above the falls.

I have so wanted to return to this beautiful waterfall, the Sol Duc Falls, since first seeing it in 2018. My wife said I raced up the steps at the end of the trail to the bridge-viewing area. It is my favorite and I was so pleased to return here on this day in September, 2025.

Here is a view of the Sol Duc Falls, landscape-framed. I love this unique waterfall that plunges into a deep gorge making its way through the Sol Duc Valley of Olympic National Park. Water-levels were low this year, but it's still a pretty view.

Olympic is a wonderful park for getting out in nature. Walks and trails. Rainforests, lakes and mountains, beaches and solitude. Friendly folks. Sol Duc falls was rushing in spring but the forest was still wonderful in September when the crowds have gone away.

Sol Duc Falls, nestled within Olympic National Park in Washington State, is a stunning cascade where the Sol Duc River splits into multiple channels before plunging into a mossy, fern-lined gorge. Surrounded by ancient rainforest and towering evergreens, the falls are a sensory experience of rushing water, cool mist, and the earthy scent of damp woods. The falls offer a breathtaking view of the powerful 48-foot drop. The name "Sol Duc" means "sparkling water" in the Quileute language.

A small tumbling falls on the path to Sol Duc Falls. It was refreshing to take a long pause to listen, breathe in and savor this refreshing woodland spot. Nature sure does nurture.

Have a great week!

Olympic National Forest, Washington.

Old-growth forest, subalpine lakes, and snowy peaks populate the Sol Duc landscape, while the Sol Duc River serves as a key highway for coho salmon, running through the valley and ascending to the lakes and headwaters in the surrounding mountains.

The Sol Duc Valley is located in the northwest region of the park. Just 40 minutes west of Port Angeles, the Sol Duc is accessed by turning off Highway 101 onto the Sol Duc Road.

For those looking to spend anywhere from a few hours to an entire day in the Sol Duc, there are a number of shorter hikes that may be suitable. From the parking lot, the walk through old-growth forest to the Sol Duc Falls overlook is just a mile. Lover's Lane (6 mile loop) and the climb to Mink Lake (5.2 miles roundtrip) can also be done in just a few hours.

A rainbow over Sol Duc Falls in the Olympic National Park. Because of the heavy precipitation in the Olympic Peninsula, the plants in this area show some of the best green colors: fresh, lustrous, and vivid.

Today's photo is from Washington’s Olympic Peninsula. This shot was taken while hiking to the Sol Duc falls along the hiking trail. The forest there is just enchanting with the amazing old trees with moss hanging all over them. I was so focused on finally getting a shot of the Sol Duc falls that I concentrated on keeping my pace up to get to the falls and getting the shots I came for. On our way back from the falls, we took a more leisurely pace and I started to notice how wonderful the forest is and started to take some shots of the many interesting views.

Located in The Olympic National Park in Washington State, these falls were on the top of my bucket list when visiting the USA during early fall in 2016.
