I think I am finally getting my brain fully wrapped around this manual Photoshop processing. What I love about manually processing a RAW image into a pseudo HDR (or is it really a true HDR?) is the control I have over the total image. I get to decide what elements I want to bring out or hide in all areas of the processing phase of creating a final image.
As an artist/photographer when we see something that we want to capture there is an element(s) in that scene that really inspired us to even pick up the camera in the frist place. We sometimes have the ability by composition alone to show the viewer that element, or also by compostion and processing together. Sometimes when we rely on a sofware program the processing part may get lost. Now please don't misunderstand me, I do love HDR programs too, especially when I want an image to have a certain look or feel. So it really is creative taste to the individual.
Here is ALL the techy info:
Nikon D700, Nikon 50mm f/1.4 lens, iso 6400, 1/60 sec @f/1.4, RAW+jpeg cpature. This is the RAW image file processed in CS2. I made 3 files concentrating on exposure and light source (white balance). I then blended all 3 images to make this final Pirates image. The real trick to doing this manually is using Layers & Masks.
