Lyulin,

Post Sowjet times a lot did change ...

Lyulin (Bulgarian: Люлин, pronounced [ˈlʲulin]) is the largest residential complex both in the capital of Bulgaria - Sofia and in the whole country. It is located in the western outskirts of city and is divided into 10 microdistricts. The complex has a population of 114,813 and is at the disposal of all means of public transport.

Lyulin is a relatively new district. The infrastructural work on the complex began in 1971 and the first condominium was constructed in 1973. The complex is named after the nearby Lyulin Mountain. It is a popular place to live, as transportation is favourable and the real estate is somewhat inexpensive. Thx to Wikipedia

These photos were taken on 17th of February in Sofia, Bulgaria where a protest against the power companies currently in service was organised. Although these companies were involved in corrupt activities and some even proven to have violated multiple legislation, there was heavy police and riot-police presence throughout the protest. There were clashes when the crowd reached the main office of the power company serving Sofia and that's when the police's complete lack of hesitation to use brutal force was evident. Riot police armed with shield and bats stormed into the crowd hitting people in their way. Fortunately no protestants were badly hurt.

If you want to use any of these photos, ask for permission- I have plenty more material lying around.

Near the center I found a place where lots of people took a walk and passed my camera.

Dubai, Spice Souk.

The abaya is a women's garment worn in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Aparently the one that is open in front is worn by younger girls over their normal clothes. There is another style, closed, which is usually worn by more devout women. The head- scarf is called hijab (see Wikipedia article, hijab has another primary meaning).

It is amazing but in Dubai, at least in the more traditional areas and markets I really felt much more at ease wearing the abaya. It is weird for the western gaze but trust me, you feel better wearing it.

All the time though, I was wondering: Was I showing lack of respect by not wearing it? Or was I showing lack of respect by wearing it even though I am not local or muslim?

If you found this photo via a Google image search because someone on Craigslist is looking for a nanny but it sounds suspicious, your suspicions are correct. That Craigslist poster is a scam and they are NOT the family pictured here. I took these photos for my friends back in 2009 and they currently do not live in the US. I am disheartened that my images are used in such an awful manner and I apologize for the inconvenience.
