This holiday season there's no shortage of festive events going on in Amsterdam. Christmas shows, markets, winter festivals, ice skating, even the circus has come to town. Get amongst the wintry fun. Amsterdammer's love for the word gezellig meaning: similar to cosy but used in a broader sense, is seen no more fittingly than over the holiday period, when the city's village charm shines in fairy lights, snugs up in warm cafes and bars and brims with silly season spirit. It's a pity the canals are not yet frozen this year. But Ice Skating is possible throughout the city. You can skate and glide around the Jaap Edenbaan or head to the smaller rinks at Museumplein and Leidseplein. And then warm up with a hot meal and a drink at one of the nearby cafes. Pink Christmas comes to town till 31 December 2012 featuring theatre, shows, ice skating events, the Drag Queen Winter Olympics, club nights and a whole lot more. This year the Amsterdam Light Festival puts the beautiful city centre and its canals in the limelight. The festival features the Illuminade evening walking route, the Boulevard of Light along the Amstel River, the Socialight programme and of course, the spectacular Christmas Canal Parade. But even without light parade the canals remain always a pretty sight.

De feestmaand december staat in het teken van heuse kerstactiviteiten in Amsterdam. Trek je schaatsen aan, doe je tegoed aan glühwein en braadworst. Dit jaar kunnen we helaas niet op de grachten schaatsen. Echte schaatsliefhebbers komen aan hun trekken op de Jaap Edenbaan. Als je een klein beetje ijspret wilt combineren met een gezellig diner of afzakkertje in de stad, kun je ook terecht op de kleine ijsbanen op het Museum- en Leidseplein. Hoewel het nog niet echt koud is geweest is de gezelligheid in Amsterdam op vrijwel elke hoek van de straat te vinden. Artis is tijdens de kerstvakantie elke dag tot 20.00 uur open. Er is een apart lichtpad ontworpen, de dierentuin is feestelijk verlicht en je kunt je tegoed doen aan stamppot, oliebollen en glühwein. The Paradiso Orchestra en hun muzikale gasten zorgen op tweede kerstdag voor een bonte middag in de grote zaal van Paradiso. Alle traditionele ingrediënten zoals glühwein, muziek en een verrassend kerstverhaal maken het kerstuitje compleet! Op verschillende plekken in Amsterdam vind je lichtsculpturen van internationale kunstenaars en kunstzinnig verlichte gebouwen. Inclusief Illuminade avondwandelroute, de Boulevard of Light langs de Amstel en de spectaculaire Christmas Canal Parade door de grachten. Maar ook zonder lichtparade blijven de grachten altijd een mooi gezicht.

One my favorite shops in Newtown to stop and browse in (and check out who is manning the counter) is Faster Pussycat. Primarily the store sells all types of custom culture from the 40s, 50s and 60s such as books, clothing, shoes and accessories. You can rest assured that there is always something interesting to see and/or meet.
Today was attempt number 2 at making Elayna's portrait (who works part-time at FP) as my first crack at it was a complete fail after I chose a horrendous background that served no one.
So this time when we met again lady luck was on my side as she wasn't working which meant I could find a background with a little more appeal.
Now Elayna made it quite clear she absolutely hates having her photo taken and she struggled to relax in front of the
camera, but I was determined to get something we would both be pleased with.
I really liked her 50s style pink head scarf and her overall fashion sense. As it turns out Elayna is a fashion designer and has trained and worked with some of the big names in Europe and is currently working for Uscari and Socialight.
She has a great sense of humour and is very honest about her self and life.
Thanks for being part of the Human Family project and I hope you like the portrait even though it was an unpleasant experience.

This is a screenshot from a couple of weeks ago when I was developing a new mobile version of Socialight. This application will talk to the satellites (if your phone supports this) to get your location (GPS). Once it has this data, you can find notes around you or create your own (text- or image-based).
I had to hack everything from scratch -- softkeys, horizontal wrapping, vertical scrolling, images, icons, ...
The example note it's showing above is one that I created [1] in SoHo. I was out having dinner with some friends and Mike Myers sat near us!

Amsterdam, 07-01-2013: Begonnen als de grachtenparade Winter Magic Amsterdam in 2009 is dit evenement de afgelopen jaren uitgebouwd tot wat nu het Amsterdams Licht Festival is. Dat festival wordt gehouden van 07-12-2012 t/m 20-01-2013 en bestaat uit vier vaste onderdelen n.l. SociaLight (diverse evenementen), Christmas Canal Parade (parade van verlichte bootjes), de Illuminade (wandelroute langs lichtkunstwerken) en de Boulevard of Light (verlichte monumenten, boten en bruggen langs de Amstel). Verspreid over het Waterlooplein hangen honderden door Amsterdamse basisscholieren beschilderde lampenkapjes: het Kinder Lampenkappen Bos / Impression of the Amsterdam Light Festival 2012-2013 with light sculptures, illuminated buildings, bridges and boats and light projections on buildings. Pupils from all over Amsterdam painted hundreds of lampshades; all the spots with lampshades on the flea market Waterlooplein together form the Children Lampshades Forest.
Sat on a gen y lifestyle panel today for a press junket of about 75 international reporters to talk about technology, the internet, and blogging. It was kind of like being on a talk show. I liked that they had coconut jelly beans in pristine white bowls.
