the soapmaker was at the bank and due back soon. The husband wanted me to stick around until she got back but he didn't want to sell me anything himself. When I got inside there were two madames with all kinds of soaps they wanted to buy. They worked him hard until they convinced him that he had what it takes to ring up the sale whether the boss was home or not.

My best ever rebatch & soap save! I made this Sunday, came home from work the next morning to find a soapmaker's nightmare. What the heck is wrong with my soap??? I had left out one of the oils!! ARGH!!! Couldn't figure out why my oven & soap were still so warm, as the oven had been off for over 12 hours. Well, I had turned on the over light and forgotten to turn it off. I think that probably saved my soap, as it was still pretty soft and hot. I shredded it, added the omitted oil, melted and beat it with a mixer. Glopped it into molds and put back in the oven. This came out better than any of my rebatches ever have, and no lye zap to the tongue when it was done.

I use SoapCalc to formulate, but always print out my recipe on MMS or other lye calculator with less info on the page. I use their water & lye suggestions. However, this recipe uses some Crisco, which MMS doesn't list. The page with a calculator that I use that does list shortening is no longer online. So, I used the printout from SoapCalc. Sure enough... too much info printed out for my pea brain, I guess, and I missed one of the oils.Thought it seemed like there should have been more liquid oils when I made it, glanced at the recipe, and still didn't notice my first oil on the list. Won't make that mistake again!

This started out as an experiment, a white base with blue columns. So much for that. I'm just happy to have usable soap.

This photo was taken during a breakfast meeting I hosted for Indie Beauty Network members in the early morning hours before a day of conferencing at the 2009 Conference of Handcrafted Soapmakers. We talked largely about the state of cosmetics industry legislation and what we can do as a group to make a positive contribution to the continuing regulatory discussions at the FDA and on Capitol Hill.

we watched a documentary about how much chemicals invade our lives a while back and since then, we've sort of changed our ways. so far, we've made all-purpose cleaner and laundry soap. today's adventure was making liquid soap. surprisingly, you add honey to it. both kids are very interested in the process, which is kind of cool too.

I think this soapmaker/vendor may have gotten a bit irritated at me, since I insisted on picking up all his fancy soaps and smelling them but didn't buy anything. There were tons of unusual scents.
