On a recent trip to Yellowstone, the wildlife viewing was quite good. All but one of our days in the park were 'three dog days', having seen wolves, coyotes, and foxes all in one day.
This wolf was crossing Soda Butte valley with part of a carcass that was on the opposite side of the road from the rest of the pack. The blood in this picture appears pink due to the temperature. At the time of this photo it was -22 degrees Fahrenheit. When the blood freezes at these low temperatures, it appears pink.
We were able to watch this pack of wolves all day. They were lounging on the opposite side of the creek from the road. Every once in a while one of them would cross the creek, then the road, and feed on the carcass. They would then return across the road and creek, and lay with the other pack members. Some wolves are very adept at crossing roads when people are near, others are much more cautious.
We did not stay here all day, choosing instead to move around in the park to try and see other wildlife. Every time we stopped back, the wolves were there. A carcass is not a resource that the wolves would give up easily, especially during the trying winter months.

My ski at the summit of "cheval noir" in Lauzière, french alps.
This shot was taken in May, when most of the ski resort were closed. And there was almost nobody there, bright sun and good snow. I love backcountry skiing !

Legend an arctic wolf and pookie a shih poo go eye to eye as eco another pure arctic wolf female looks on in background. Pookie and Legend are in what is called a seperation pen attached to the main habitat, this is only used for a short period of time when you seperate intact male and female wolves if you wont be breeding during winter breeding season. There simply are not enough zoos that want wolves. The owner of the facility also believes that the best message is conservation of habitat, meaning to simply be breeding wild animals in captivity only to keep them there has no true conservation effect long term, unless they (the animals) are part of a true reintroduction back into the wild program. Wild animals should only be bred in captivity if there is TRUE purpose and necessity for such. Wild animals truly do belong in the wild, and the longer one works with such in captivity the more they learn to understand and appreciate this mentality.

Eclipse moon song an alaskan tundra wolf in her habitat. Here you can see her in a slick summer coat. Theres a reason why you wont see summer wolf calendars, because mother nature gives wolves a very good clean haircut where they lose all their undercoat and longer guard hairs, both which give them that huge massive coat and majestic look people are used to seeing on calendars, posters etc.
