Another Snow Monkey / Macaque shot from my visit to Japan in 2014. They were so expressive and such a treat to watch; apparently the area has changed immensely due to additional tourism - - glad I saw it when I did.

During my work I had the opportunity to visit this area.

I've been looking at a bunch of Japan pics recently - - last time there was 2014 - - and I've processed very few of the pictures that I took

Getting excited about Japan since I leave in 2 weeks !

These guys are such characters - - they come down from the mountains in the surrounding area to swim in the hot springs. It was freezing out but it didn't stop them from going for a dip - - entire families would sit in the hot springs grooming each other

A new more virulent corona mutation, a possible lockdown extension or winter blues.

This sow monkey feels like you and me :D

Hope I can cheer you up with this little fellow.

It seems that whenever I see these monkeys, they often appear to be scowling. But this little guy apparently hasn't yet learned the look. :-)

... that is what I think this little monkey had on his mind during the procedure.

(Macaca fuscata) There were many babies and youngsters in and around the hot pool.

I’m sure some people will find this image a little disturbing but I couldn’t help thinking of the famous Edvard Munch painting when I saw this snow monkey at the Jigokudani Park in Japan. I was obviously concerned for his wellbeing and kept an eye on him for a while. Thankfully he seemed to perk up and rejoined his friends after a while (EM121164)

Snow Monkey (Macaca fuscata)

Snow Monkey (Macaca fuscata)

This was taken at the famous Jigokudani Yaen Koen (Jigokudani Monkey Park) near Yudanaka in Japan. Generally known as “Snow Monkeys” they are wild and come down from the mountains to bathe in the hot springs during cold weather. They have absolutely no fear of people and being left food by the park keepers is another incentive for them to venture down from the mountains. They’re the only macaques in the world known to bathe in this way and are apparently the most northerly dwelling primates on the planet (other than humans of course) (EM120804)

One of the highlights of my life was to be able to hike up to the hot springs near Nagano, Japan this past winter to see the Japanese macaques, aka Snow monkeys.

No other non-human primate lives farther north, nor in a colder climate.

In this photograph one of the monkeys is grooming the other one which was a common behavior we observed between many of these primates of all ages.

I read that Japanese macaques groom each other for a variety of social and hygienic reasons. Grooming strengthens social bonds, helps establish and maintain hierarchies, and serves as a way to manage stress and potentially attract dominant males. It also plays a role in hygiene, as they remove parasites and debris from each other's fur.
