Always a Joy to watch wildlife snatch a meal out of the pond. Don’t imagine I would be so successful if it were me standing there bare-handed trying to find something to eat : )

Glossy Ibis

At distance, Glossy Ibises look uniformly dark, but a close look in good light reveals stunning colors: deep maroon, emerald, bronze, and violet. This long-legged, long-billed bird forages in flocks through wetlands and wet agricultural fields, searching for insects, small fish, and seeds.

The birds are somewhat nomadic, dispersing widely after the nesting season—a tendency that has aided the species in the past 100 years as it has expanded its range from the southeastern U.S. to include much of eastern North America.

Flocks of Glossy Ibis forage quite close together, advancing slowly as they probe a muddy area. This activity often attracts Snowy Egrets and other species of waders, which capture minnows and other prey moving away from the feeding ibis flocks.

Glossy Ibis is a cosmopolitan species, also found in Europe, Asia, and Africa. In recent decades, its population in Spain has been increasing rapidly, probably helped by increased rice cultivation there. Glossy Ibises banded in Spain have turned up as far away as Barbados, having crossed the Atlantic—a remarkable feat but one that several species of heron and egret have managed as well.

The oldest recorded Glossy Ibis was at least 21 years old and lived in Virginia between 1971 and 1992.

This pileated woodpecker worked so hard to grab a piece of the bird suet cake, I guess persistence paid off.

This is not the mama fox with the eye injury. I haven't seen her lately which makes me worry. A short time before I took this photo this mama fox snatched all eleven of the duck eggs in the nest in our field. I assume mama duck got away but her eggs were not spared and became a delicious dinner for the fox. The duck sat on the nest for two weeks and had about two and a half weeks to go before they would have hatched and then she would have led them back to the pond. Very sad for the duck but a decent meal for the fox. Life where the wild things live is never easy.

Another fall migrant passing through right now on what can be up to a 4,000 mile round-trip to the Arctic each year. They are constantly on the lookout for raptors looking to snatch them up while they feed in wetlands, and when they sense danger they take flight seemingly instantaneously and wheel around in speedy, sharp-turning flocks...so it's a lot of fun to try & get a shot of them in flight !

Captured at LeClaire IA this eagle make a one clawed snatch of a fish from the river with amazing swiftness. At about 8 frames a second - my image prior was him just touching the water - so imagine in that time the fish is in claws and away.

I've had some pretty good Bald Eagle experiences the last month or so and this was certainly one of the highlights, albeit a mile away. Four-year-old about to snatch a coot up in those talons.

My day trying to photograph bald eagles didn’t go very well, so here is an image from an earlier visit to the wetlands.

The bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) is a bird of prey found in North America. A sea eagle, it has two known subspecies and forms a species pair with the white-tailed eagle (Haliaeetus albicilla). Its range includes most of Canada and Alaska, all of the contiguous United States, and northern Mexico. It is found near large bodies of open water with an abundant food supply and old-growth trees for nesting.

The bald eagle is an opportunistic feeder which subsists mainly on fish, which it swoops down and snatches from the water with its talons. It builds the largest nest of any North American bird and the largest tree nests ever recorded for any animal species, up to 4 m (13 ft) deep, 2.5 m (8.2 ft) wide, and 1 metric ton (1.1 short tons) in weight. Sexual maturity is attained at the age of four to five years.

Bald eagles are not actually bald; the name derives from an older meaning of the word, "white headed". The sexes are identical in plumage, but females are about 25 percent larger than males. The beak is large and hooked. The plumage of the immature is brown.

The bald eagle is the national bird of the United States of America. The bald eagle appears on its seal.

A Steppe Eagle (Aquila nipalensis) was hovering over the head after a take off for the inspection of the surroundings. The wings and tails were fully stretched and had the kinetic feelings in the air which has made a delightful aerobic composition here. Pics was taken from Tal Chhapar Sanctuary in Rajasthan, India.

The eagle is so swift at snatching a fish – its concentration includes flight and if you noticed, its aim has picked up the fish with its talons and without turning his head.

The photo was taken at 1/2500th of a second.

Near a ridge line road, a Black-throated Green Warbler lurks around a downed tree. For a brief moment, this colorful bird perched on this mossy branch that was leaning on the tree. He spent just a few seconds here before continuing along the ridge. He did so, likely looking for a hardy breakfast consisting of caterpillars and/or spiders. I've even seen these birds snatch gnats from mid-air. It's these behaviors that get me thinking. The term "bird of prey" may be reserved for larger raptors, but most birds are predators in their own way. Whether they hunt insects, reptiles, small mammals or even other birds. Even hummingbirds eat their fair share of tiny insects and arachnids.
