It was a misty morning in Varanasi as I came across this snake charmer on Guleria Ghat. Ignoring my ophidiophobia (fear of snakes), I approached him to compose my shot, while trying not to get too close.

Varanasi is an incredible city. Known as Kashi and Benaras, it's the cultural capital of India. Varanasi is a melting pot, where both death and life come together. Dating to the 11th century B.C. (that’s over 3000 years!), this is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities. It draws Hindu pilgrims who bathe in the Ganges River’s sacred waters and perform funeral rites.

Lonely Planet describes the city as “one of the most blindingly colorful, unrelentingly chaotic and unapologetically indiscreet places on earth”. Not everyone is prepared to visit this incredible city, where the circle of life overpowers all of your senses. My local guide’s words summed it up perfectly: "You don’t visit Varanasi, you live Varanasi". It was truly a life-changing experience for me.

Our favorite activity is...SNAKE CHARMING!

Charming the snakes.

Come play with us!

Our family went to Red Rock Canyon today for a family drive. (We rode in the wheelchair, and the father person helped us pose Dropsy around the educational sites. All photos were taken by US though. We got a new Nikon for Christmas! More megapixels means more Kenner flaws up close and in real time quality!)

Dropsy looks kinda cross-eyed here. Snake-charming can put you in a trance and do funny things to your face that way sometimes. Happens. True.

SnakeCharmers Aventador on Rush, apparently he has upgraded (or downgraded?) once again to an LP570-4 Superleggera, which I have shots of! I also saw Jesse Jackson SR. walking out of the restaurant in the back later that day. Since today was an Italian day which would you rather see next, British, German, or American cars?

A snake charmer at the ghat......

VARANASI: Where India Meets....

Every morning hundreds of devotees throng the Dasaswamedh and other adjoining 'ghats' in the city to take a holy dip in the Ganga. Devotees then perform various rituals at the ghats and special puja at temples like Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Sankat Mochan Temple.

Varanasi also commonly known as Banaras is a city situated on the banks of the River Ganga in Uttar Pradesh, India. It is regarded as a holy city by Hindus, Buddhists and Jains. It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world and probably the oldest in India. The culture of Varanasi is closely associated with the River Ganges and the river's religious importance. The city has been a cultural and religious centre in North India for several thousand years.

Hawa Mahal, Palace of Winds, Jaipur, India

Hawa Mahal is a five story palatial complex specifically built so that the women of the Royal Palace could go up and look through the windows to observe the Jaipur streets without being noticed. It was built during the time of opulence and excess of the princely states , when the women were required to wear a burqa. The Hawa Mahal is connected to the women's quarters of the palace where the royal harem lived. There are more than 300 windows from which the city can be observed. The most popular view of the Hawa Mahal is taken from the street, but I thought it was much more interesting to showcase the royal women’s quarters and the view from the top floors. I processed the image in an old tone sepia to give an aged look. This will be my last image from Jaipur.

Since then, their fates became intertwined.

Snake Charmer, Varanasi, India... cobra went back in the jar and then he whipped these out and started waving them in my face... hooogh!

A snake-charmer performs with been a traditional instrument to charm his snake at Makli graveyard near Thatta some 120 km away from Karachi.Pakistan

It is true that photographing a snake charmer was on my mental checklist of shots...but this—a pair of snake charmers in Western attire sitting on a concrete sidewalk with a pair of snakes who were not the least bit interested in being charmed—was not at all what I had in mind. And yet here I somehow found myself, wearing a turban and holding a basket full of cobra instead of a camera. The snake charmer on the left kept bopping his cobra, just out of frame, on its head to keep it engaged (and annoyed). It was about then that it occurred to me that my belief these snakes had been de-fanged was actually just an assumption.

A few years ago my mother gave me a bunch of loaded slide magazines she picked up at a second-hand shop. When I first started digging into them I noticed a large amount of faded-to-magenta Ektachrome and figured there wasn't going to much of value left in the exercise of going through it all.

But then I came across the Kodachromes.

All were still in excellent condition - no fade, perfect color. I had a hunch the slides were dated sometime around the mid-70s, but it wasn't until I took them out of the slide holders that the date stamp was revealed: these were 51 year old slides I was looking at. I have no idea who the photographer is nor what kind of camera was used, but this is like holding jewels from another generation.

The Postcard

Snake charmers in Sri Lanka on a postally unused postcard by Plâté of Ceylon.

Ceylon became Sri Lanka in 1972.

The snakes with their heads in the air are cobras.

Plâté

Husband and wife Photographers A.W.A. and Clara Plâté set up a photo studio in Colombo’s Bristol Hotel in 1890. From there they produced their photographs, and had many of these images printed in souvenir books and as postcards.

After opening branches in Nuwara, Eliya, and Kandy, they became the leading supplier of postcards in Ceylon. They produced high quality view-cards of local scenes as monochrome collotypes and tricolour prints.

They also published a series of artist-signed cards under the name Plâté’s “Art” Post Card. More than just scenery, these cards tried to project the exotic flavour of the landscape and the activities within it.

On the road to Agra, India. View On Black

Taken in 2001, scanned and edited

I came across this lady snake charmer at the Galtaji Temple, near Jaipur. She began to take out snakes and place them around her children. She must have done this as I was backing away (fear of snakely creatures). I did feel bad for her and the guide mentioned that this was a dying art. I paid her some rupees and took a photo. I was just hoping that when her baby develops teeth, the snake takes pity on him and does not bite :{

Galtaji Temple today is largely abandoned, other than the presence of many cows roaming around the 'gardens', littered with trash. It was disheartening to see cows having to resort to actually eating the rubbish as there is little else. In addition, there are hundreds of monkeys (perhaps thousands) who can be fed (buying peanuts for them).

The site is of significance as this is where the great saint (swami) Galav is believed to have spent his life and meditated. There are many temples in the complex, including the three story temple of Balaji, and the Temple of Galtaji himself. There are large bathing tanks, where many people come to bathe on Makar Sankranti - a religious festival celebrated in mid January (mid winter).

Galaxy Trooper

“If you want to steal those energy crystals, you’ll have to get past us first!”

When evil aliens and space crooks attack, the Galaxy Troopers stand ready to turn them back. As the front line of defense for the universe’s peaceful planets and outposts, these can-do interstellar warriors use their double-barreled stun dischargers and slime-resistant armor to protect innocent species and civilizations all throughout known space.

Although they battle as a single well-organized unit, in between cosmic invasions, each Galaxy Trooper has his or her own individual hobby. One bakes amazing cakes, another knits cozy socks and scarves, and there’s even a trooper who’s working on a stand-up comedy act. Knock-knock. Who’s there? It’s the Galaxy Troopers!
