Our largest snake, the Grass Snake, particularly likes wetland habitats, but can also be found in dry grasslands and in gardens, especially those with a pond nearby.Lays eggs in rotting vegetation, often in compost heaps. Like all reptiles, Grass Snakes hibernate, usually from October to April. During the summer, they can be found basking near favourite ponds or even swimming.

This tiny fella is still hanging around. It was a great test for my new Tamron 90mm macro. Probably the most difficult snake to photograph I've encountered, he's very tiny (about 5 inches) and squirmy.

Stopping for a drink in the ditch along the river. Thanks to all who view my pictures, it is appreciated.

Here's a cute little snake we found crossing the road in Madagascar.

Wildwood Park, Harrisburg, Pennsylvania

Three walkers were munching on their picnic lunch, enjoying the morning sunshine, unaware that this adder was basking a few feet away from where they were sitting. They left oblivious of their sunbathing companion.

The striking simplicity of a black and white colour scheme has always been appealing to my minimalist sensibilities, so imagine the delight at seeing for the first time, a beautiful eastern king snake in all its monochrome glory.

Another very healthy looking worm snake. Flipped under a rock.

Loved the striking colours

Whilst bowling along an old disused railway line on a gloriously warm day I almost trod on this fella. It's a male adder about 450mm long, UK's only poisonous snake.

This shot, again, resulted from my trip to the zoo in Münster. They have a big reptile house and I love these bright green snakes.

Sydney's only Endangered reptile, the Broad Headed Snake. A very cool find from a month ago

Really an amazing snake with a bit of a bad reputation. Rumor says these boas are tough cookies lashing out and attempting to get a piece of any source of irritation with their long recurved teeth. No joke considering these teeth are adapted to grabbing and holding onto birds and bats. I was reluctant but prepared to shed some of my own blood when I moved in to get some extreme close ups. Instead this wild boa acted more like a timid puppy, at times choosing to hide its head rather than look at the fearsome nikon pointed at it. I have no doubt that some or most of the boas of this species do live up to their unpleasant reputation but I was very glad this was a much more tender-hearted individual allowing me to get some different lighting angles than I might have dared attempt had it been more violent in its response to me.

A common non-venomous snake in spain.

Rat snakes (or ratsnakes) are members – along with kingsnakes, milk snakes, vine snakes and indigo snakes – of the subfamily Colubrinae of the family Colubridae. They are medium to large constrictors and are found throughout much of the Northern Hemisphere. They feed primarily on rodents and birds. With some species exceeding 3 m (10 ft) in total length, they can occupy top levels of some food chains. Many species make attractive and docile pets and one, the corn snake, is one of the most popular reptile pets in the world.[citation needed] Other species can be very skittish and sometimes aggressive, but bites are rarely serious. Like nearly all colubrids, rat snakes pose no threat to humans. Rat snakes were long thought to be completely nonvenomous, but recent studies have shown that some Old World species do possess small amounts of venom (so small as to be negligible to humans).[citation needed]

Previously, most rat snakes were assigned to the genus Elaphe, but many have been since renamed following mitochondrial DNA analysis performed in 2002. For the purpose of this article, names will be harmonized with the TIGR Database[clarification needed].

A large bull-snake (also known as a gopher snake) keeps a wary eye on this over-excited photographer. Over 4 feet long and 2 inches in diameter, it tolerated my antics quite patiently, even allowing me to shoot from just a couple feet away using the macro lens.

Even though the Watersnake is harmless, I kind of check where I stand or sit down in that area.... you never know which rock they will come out from....

The biggest of the three is the female and the other two are males.

Tiger snakes are a highly venomous snake species found in the southern regions of Australia, including its coastal islands, such as Tasmania. These snakes are highly variable in their colour, often banded like those on a tiger, and forms in their regional occurrences. Wikipedia

I was thinking this snake was dead, as it was a cold morning as I got closer it slithered off slowly the other way thank goodness.

not sure what kind of snake this is but I thought he was a pretty green. Taken at the Buffalo Zoo.

Normally they are a brighter green but this one was getting close to shedding and was darker, closer to an army green. Was neat looking.
