a blast from the past

River Fal Cornwall april 2017

Today was the last day of my holiday and as a last hike I decided to walk a few miles in the shoes of one of my first heroines. When I was five years old I visited this place, Lake MĂ€ssersee, with my parents and there was a sign along the trail telling hikers that this hidden route over the mountains to Italy played a major role in local author Ludwig Imesch‘s book „The smuggler queen of Goat Trail Pass“ („Die Schmugglerkönigin vom Geisspfad“). Needless to say my imagination went wild (it still does!). Goat Trail Pass refers to Passo della Rossa about 90 minutes by foot from this lake. In the past it was often used by smugglers and whenever I‘ve been in the vicinity of this particular pass there was horrible weather up there. You hardly ever meet people on the trail crossing the pass, today even more so with at least one meter of snow and dense fog. Not the kind of weather I’d prefer, but probably not an issue for the smuggler queen.

Serenade in the smoke gets in my eyes

Could it be you're an angel in disguise

Smuggled in through the bathroom sky light.

Quick inhale in the perfume gets me high

Drink it in 'til the bass feels soft inside

Soldier on 'til the sky holds day light

With the night,

Dim and Dangerous,

And the sky swimming over u.

You've got to let it all out, let it all out, let it out

You've got to let it all out, let it all out, let it out

Let it out

Navagio Beach, or Shipwreck Beach, is an exposed cove, sometimes referred to as "Smugglers Cove", on the coast of Zakynthos, in the Ionian Islands of Greece. Navagio Beach was originally known as Agios Georgios.

Smuggler Cove and the shape it provides, inspires many images. It was evident early on that the clouds were going to deliver, so I made sure to get out to catch them. This time, the better shot was going to come from the cliff in the area rather than from the waters edge.

I made sure to visualize the photo prior and set up my tripod at the right spot. The clouds certainly delivered and their reflections were also terrific. Albeit unexpected, the absolute stillness of the ocean added to the final image.

After a very strenuous trek through Smuggler Cove, it dawned on me how prudent it was to begin the walk out. When it gets dark there, it is very dark. And, the undulating ground can be dangerous when unnoticed. There is so much to see and plenty of opportunities, but it was time to leave. Before doing so, in order to avoid the temptation, I stowed my camera gear and used my tripod as a walking stick.

Just prior to the final exit out, the colors that appear after sunset, began to touch the sky. And, as luck would have it, I just happened to have reached the ideal location to catch those colors along with their reflections. I stopped and once again set up realizing how timely it was, because after 3 shots, the sky was again clear.

In the 1920s American prohibition alcohol smugglers would hide in the cove on the way down to the United States to avoid getting caught.

One from last Sunday and a picnic at our favourite 'local' beach - the smugglers cove at Shaldon. Although we have been there many times I usually take my camera as those boulders look different each time. The weather was a wild mix of sunshine, clouds and the occasional rain so I chose this long exposure for some additional interest.

Another photo I took last Sunday as we enjoyed a sunny break from the wet and windy weather these past few weeks. The low tide revealed some boulders in the sand which served as a bit of foreground interest for my composition. I'm currently a big fan of taking photos directly against the sun as you can tell ;-)

The Smugglers' Cove is reached by an old tunnel through the cliffs which might or might not have been used by smugglers in the past! arrr!

Numbers 21 to 29 Mermaid Street, Rye are classed as Grade II listed buildings and numbers 23 and 24 are shown in the photograph

Wikipedia: Rye is a small town and civil parish in the Rother district, in East Sussex, England, two miles from the sea at the confluence of three rivers: the Rother, the Tillingham and the Brede. In medieval times, as an important member of the Cinque Ports confederation, it was at the head of an embayment of the English Channel, and almost entirely surrounded by the sea.

Its historical association with the sea has included providing ships for the service of the Crown in time of war, and being involved in smuggling. The notorious Hawkhurst Gang used its ancient inns The Mermaid Inn and The Olde Bell Inn, which are said to be connected to each other by a secret passageway.

Those historic roots and its charm make it a tourist destination, with hotels, guest houses, B&Bs, tea rooms, and restaurants.[3] One such hotspot is Mermaid Street, which was named one of the most instagrammed streets in the UK.[4] Rye also has a small fishing fleet, and Rye Harbour has facilities for yachts and other vessels.

Believed to have been built in 1401 the Old Smuggler’s Cafe, once known as ‘Old Ship Launch Inn’, lived up to it’s namesake.

In a time where smuggling was rife, due to heavy tax on goods and excise, smugglers would cross the quiet moors in the dead of night to haul their goods. They would pull a cart that was filled with kegs full of alcohol, at the end of the cart would be a lone keg with a quill in it. When the smugglers were unlucky enough to come across someone, to bribe their silence they would offer them a free sample, and then be on with their way. When the keg was at it’s destination the quill would be removed, and the keg sealed ready for use

Not much to add here - another photo I took last Sunday on a family day out at Shaldon beach.

Fun fact: for a few of those shots from that perspective I learned that my 15+ year old hiking boots are still waterproof ;-)

A shaded path leads a visitor into Smuggler Cove and the many sights beyond. A special place with wildlife, marshes, forest, and of course inlets.

At one time, Smugglers brought their booty to shore through this area, hence the name. Now many walk its course to enjoy nature.

This is the last of my shots from the Dorset workshop in July with Paul Reiffer. It was just as the sun was rising behind the clouds. I really need to visit this place again when the sun is fully popped through the clouds.

Traditional Houses, Pegwell Bay, Ramsgate

Hiked past Smugglers Cave, so named for its past uses. Used by native Americans, Smugglers, Bandits and even supposedly a shootout. Its located near Valley of The Moon and The San Diego/ Imperial County Border.

Another much loved place again with a turbulent sea.

The beauty that surrounds us in everything for those willing to see.

FLAMBOROUGH, probably our favourite 'haunt', the weather and colours typical 'North-Sea'...

We both grew up on the Coast (different Continents!!!), with the sea, its pleasures and its dangers.

This wonderful place is on the North-Yorkshire Heritage coast.

You have Flamborough Head with the lighthouse.

The North Landing = Smuggler's Cove, you can see where it gets its name, when the tide is out, you can get into the caves, and then, The South Landing where the Life guards have their house and boat.

All within a mile from each other, three different places entirely, in the center you'll find a small village.

Its beauty, through the seasons ALWAYS special, its people, birds and superb views, changing with the weather, influencing the -all so important- light!

The cliffs are limestone...

Thanks for your visit, so very much appreciated, Magda, (*_*)

Not an easy one to smuggle things from judging from the coastal access. Maybe it was a place to stash stuff?

Os de CivĂs

is a village in the central Pyrenees mountains, in the municipality of Les Valls de Valira in Catalonia, Spain, and is located to the west of Andorra, near the villages of AixĂ s and Bixessarri.

CivĂs is the nearest Spanish village.

It is the most populated village in the municipality.

Os de Civís is very close to the Spain–Andorra border, and is unique in being the only Spanish village that can be reached by vehicle only by going through Andorra.

It has a number of medieval buildings including a Romanesque church.

The boardwalk was recently completed. It's a very nice addition.

You can see the "Notch" in the back. It's a very narrow pass that you can barely drive through in summertime. It's very scenic. The name derives from all different items that were smuggled through the pass from Canada, for example liquor in the time of prohibition.

A quiet and gentle walk through Smuggler Cove, can be very therapeutic. It tends to calm those frazzled nerves, lower one's heart beat, and quiet the voice within.

This path is one that both leads in, and takes one out. The phrase "Aloha" is one that means both hello and goodbye, hence the title.
