Earth markings such as smoking bylaw signage are good indicators to where in the space-time continuum you are. Fashion is another, though it tends to repeat itself every few decades. Most press is timestamped, so observing all the above will be your best initial bet to get a general idea to the year and rough geographical location at least... and hope to high galaxy that wherever you end up, that you have enough credits to get by or better yet, something to barter.

In the great Japanese 'Shinkansen' trains there are of course (!) Smoking areas!
The air extraction systems are so perfectly designed
that there is no harassment of other passengers.
Incidentally, this is also the case in most cafés ...
Also in this field Japan offers the best solution for all!
I can't resist taking pix of this so-called "smoking room" which no longer has chairs in it ~ and playing with the pix.
Here I've pushed the image I took towards black and white to emphasize the patterns the sunlight and shadows make.

SMOKING AREA
no rules, no limitations, no boundaries it's like an art™

Early one morning on the ferry from Cherbourg to Rosslare, I stepped out on deck before sunrise. Two smokers had claimed their spots — one inside the glass cabin, the other leaning against the wall outside. The wet deck picked up the glare of the artificial lights, while the sea behind was still in darkness.
The scene felt quiet, almost subdued, compared to earlier crossings when the smoking area used to be crowded. Was it simply fewer smokers these days, or just fewer passengers on this route, which is scheduled to end in September 2025?

Smokers quitting over higher cigarette prices
With a price increase on tobacco products from July 1 (20~30yen/pack) , many smokers seem set to give up the habit as quit-smoking programs in hospitals around the country have seen a sharp increase in appointments and inquiries.
The programs, which are considered medical treatment, offer nicotine patches and consultations by specialists. The average cost of the programs is 50,000 yen (500usd) to 60,000 yen (600usd).

JT (japan Tobacco) is committed to taking various measures to improve customer satisfaction, including the establishing of designated smoking spaces. The company is also committed to preventing youths from smoking with an industry-wide initiative to introduce cigarette vending machines equipped with an adult identification function, which will begin in 2008 nationwide. This will naturally lead to more costs for the company, but JT believes the youth smoking prevention is an important cause and thus is supporting the investment.
