Smoke art! The shot is of smoke from incense stick on a black ground. The shot is inverted and color filled in using gradient. The symmetry is created using a copy and flipping horizontally.

Time for another smoke image. It has been awhile since I have posted one. I still have quite a few smoke images that I have made and I will post one from time to time.

To get this result the original image (which had colours added in processing) was rotated and cropped, then duplicated and the layer flipped. The canvas size was then doubled in width and the duplicated layer moved into position.

Smoke photo manipulation

revisited smoke photography today. I did some a few years ago, but haven't given it a second thought.

I thought this shot looked like the halo energy sword, which clearly is awesome, so I stuck with it.

For - that someone who has a straange phobia of fish. ey, i'm sorry this didnt involve anyone getting high, but since you told me you wanted to join me, it's dedicated to you!Presenting my very first attempt at smokeart! this thing's a tough nail to crack.. had to hold the stick in one hand and the 30D in the other. autofocus was unfortunately, not working =( which created loads of problems for me. but all in all, i love it! :D

Another day when the time ran away from me (compiling a Macro Mondays Blurb photobook).

I had a look at the FCB's 52 week challenge, and Smoke Art was top of the list.

My den now smells like a hippy's teepee, but I had great fun!

Basic edits only in LR, then three images overlaid in Photoshop with the Screen blending mode, on a widened canvas.

I made this one some time ago, but several others got in the way of it being released. I thought it was appropriately titled for this weekend, when many people have been watching the sky. Fortunately Hurricane Irene appears to have been pretty gentle.

As has been the norm for me with photography, I set out to try an idea and end up with something different than I envisioned.

I haven't taken any new smoke pictures in over a year. There are ideas I have thought about how to capture a better smoke image to work with but life/work has sidelined my progress. I tend to fiddle with old shots and see how I can achieve something varied from the last smoke composition.

I usually use only one smoke plume and then copy and paste. This one was done with a shot that had some "technical problems". I had plenty of light spill over from colored lights and hot spots. Reverting back to my "why not" instead of "why" attitude, at At 2 A.M. I accepted I was not going to win the insomnia battle and started changing blending modes and settings. I figured this would be a dead end, but it opened the door wider. Unfortunately I still have the same work deadline as I did yesterday so it may be a bit before I can fully implement some of my new found knowledge on a fully realized piece.

52Frames (week 9) "Negative Space"

I haven't taken photos since 2019 but have been trying different ideas in photoshop to layer and arrange the shots over the last couple years. A friend from work (named Raber) sent me a box filled with hundreds of packages of incense sticks because he liked some of the results and they have been sitting on a shelf for about a year.

A few weeks ago I purchased an new camera and with a few days off from work this was one of the results.

If you look towards the middle or outer parts long enough you may see some animal heads.

I do my photoshop with the smoke shots at night when I've lost my battle with insomnia. As reassurance I don't work with sharp objects or heavy machinery.

Made from single photo of a smoke plume, layered and mirrored in photoshop. Vibrance and saturation boosted. Original project reduced significantly and in stages. Most time consuming part of the process was reducing the size for uploading. Original size was 182.793 inches by 182.793 inches at ppi for printing. Project was 90 layers and project size was 120 gigs. This is a low res copy at 166.7 MB.

While coming up with # 256 (below), I created a number of other possibilities, so I thought I would start with a series based on that one.

Tried different blending mode with two different smoke shots. I changed the hue of the smoke to orange, and removed some excess smoke.

It's Sunday I'm sore and bored. Last Friday I moved, unpacked yesterday and today I recovered while sitting at a laptop.

This picture is something I have been thinking about for several months and wanted to reshoot before I tried it out. Today I figured it wouldn't be until the end of the year before I had a studio set up, (something I never had). These shots were done in a small narrow hallway between pocket doors. I kept tripping over light stands while constantly retaping cardboard boxes and paper to block and guide the light. I'd like to say a lot of love went into the shots, but I just remember using a lot of colorful language and being frustrated.

This image was made from 2 separate photo's

Playing with some smoke images I shot quite awhile ago, I put green balls in a bottle and took a lot of effort into lighting with colored lights so it was counter intuitive to desaturate this image.

I was talking to a close photographer friend (retired sound guy) about some of my smoke shots. He suggested a metal print to see how it would turn out.

My printing experience is basically sending twelve pictures of my kids out to be made into calendars so dropping 200 bucks on a print seems unnerving to me. I made this one for the sole purpose to print. Although it is not the largest I've done I still have not been able to output a high res copy for printing. The original project is huge and crashed several times. I don't know if it is because too many layers or that I used 2 sources for the circle or it maybe trying to hit a values for the print.

I do know one thing for certain, I'm pretty ignorant when photography becomes technical. But, I am able to spit out a highly compressed Jpeg,

I'm pretty stubborn so I will figure it out, .... eventually.

Original dimensions were 189.6 inches by 169.8 inches at 300 ppi.
