If you are willing to look, interesting forms are everywhere. This look like an art installation to me, but is just marks left on the road. The text is cropped from an upside down “SLOW”, situated next to some road signs. But it is beautiful to my eye. I love seeing typography in the wild—whether they were intended as typography or not. It says something to me.

An international roster of photojournalists stood by at the footbridge crossing Garden Road between Cheung Kong Centre and Bank of China Tower waiting for the rally to go underneath them.
Every time I go do photojournalism I would notice people trying to get a spot in the front. Actually the best vantage point is not down there—it’s up there. Grab a telephoto lens and start shooting.

You either love it or you hate it, but one thing is clear—it is impossible to not notice Chinese artist 岳敏君 Yue Minjun’s works, which depict men frozen in laughters.
The large sculpture in the foreground is part of a series titled “The Tao of Laughter,” which was previously on view in Hong Kong at Harbour City in 2012. They were inspired by Chinese traditional philosophical text 道德經 Tao Te Ching [1] written by 老子 Laozi, which supports the power of laughter as a path to inner peace.
Yue is commonly associated with the “Cynical Realism” by art critics. The painting in the background can be seen earlier in the stream [2].

The one thing I noticed from photographing this game is that there really aren’t many captures which contain the ball and the guy. As soon as something of interest is happening, the ball is already fast gone. I feel that it is somewhat important to actually see the ball in the frame so I picked to process this.
This is Luca Marinelli (HKF Number 16). He is the defender for the team and is originally from Varese, Italy [1].
I photograph this across the width of a standard soccer pitch, so this lens is definitely a keeper for sports photography. I would have preferred to get the frame rate of the 7D but this was at night and only the 6D had the usable 12800 ISO, which this is shot at. No Noise Reduction is applied. Like I said, very usable.

Richard Patterson (born 1963 in Leatherhead, Surrey) is an English artist and one of the Young British Artists (YBAs).
YBA is essentially a collective born out of a group show which successfully got its relevant media attention because of various marketing strategy of getting “important people” to notice them. Before the age of Internet / social media, getting “taste makers” to give a positive review appears to jump start your career quite nicely.
So what is the significance to his green butt of a toy minotaur figure? If you somehow fell in love with the YBAs many years ago then you would love it regardless what is on the paint. For the recently initiated, I do not see much in this judging purely from a singular art work point of view.
It is cute. That’s about it. If you are looking to art as a financial investment though, it is worth a look.

龍舟 Dragon boat is an important part of Chinese culture with over 2000 years of history. Dragon boat races are traditionally held as part of the annual 端午節 Duanwu Festival held on the fifth day of the fifth month on the Chinese Lunar Calendar (usually in June on the Gregorian calendar).
While ‘competition’ has taken place annually for more than 20 centuries as part of religious ceremonies and folk customs, dragon boat racing has emerged in modern times as an international sport, beginning in Hong Kong in 1976.
Pictured is one team practicing their rowing skill today at Tolo Harbour—four months ahead of the game. I suspect that more will be seen in coming months, and I look forward to the spectacle. I was born in the Year of the Dragon and I suspect that my affinity to this watersport is not completely without grounds.

The faces are cropped off here to hide the athletes’ identities, but the essence of their playing is all there.

Give me a camera, and I am never bored.
The urban life is filled with deadweight time. For this photo, I was waiting for the bus to go home. But once I have a camera in hand then I can be stuck in traffic all day long without a moment of boredom.
This is why there is a photography series for shopping malls, a photography series for human logistics, a photography for almost everything—even for when I go to bathrooms.
Photography is my creative outlet. It brings me happiness. It prevents me from killing myself. It is in many ways my biohack. I have ADHD+Bipolar, so I get bored very easily. But photography keeps life interesting to me. And having an interesting life is what makes life worthy to live for.

The West Kowloon Cultural District (WKCD) is a strategic investment by the Hong Kong Government to meet the long-term infrastructure needs of the arts and cultural sector and to position Hong Kong as a world-class city for contemporary arts and cultural entertainments.
The proposed and currently developing site is approximately 40 hectares and when completed will include 17 arts and cultural venues as well as space for arts education. One of these development will be the M+ Museum, which recently made news in the art world by snatching Lars Nittve to be its executive director.
Nittve was the founding Director of Tate Modern in London, former Director of the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, the founding Director of Rooseum – Center for Contemporary Art - in Malmö, Sweden, and Director of the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebaek, Denmark. Many have high hopes that by involving Nittve it would allow Hong Kong to make a mark in the art world—an area where Hong Kong at the moment quite frankly lacks.
At the moment WKCD is still under heavy construction but WKCD has taken the opportunity to organise some temporary art installations such as the “Mobile M+: Inflation!”, which features inflatable sculptures at the future site of M+.
The site was closed because of weather when I visited it but trust that I will go back again when the weather is good. A roster of international artists are involved, including: Cao Fei (China); Choi Jeong Hwa (South Korea); Jeremy Deller (UK); Jiakun Architects (China); Paul McCarthy (USA); Tomás Saraceno (Argentina); Tam Wai Ping (Hong Kong).

Here is another panorama shot on Saturday when Edward Snowden supporters protest outside the Hong Kong SAR Central Government Complex.
Unlike the previous shot [1] which was shot at 400mm, this one is shot at 100mm, also handheld. I had originally intended to see if I would be able to stitch the 400mm shots together with the 100mm to get a giant pano with both detail in the people area as well as the context—the flags which designate the location with the flag of Hong Kong and China in the foreground. But alas I was unable to with available software.
But hopefully the two together provide you with comparable details. There was not a lot of available light on Saturday so zooming in will not provide as much detail as the 400mm shot.
The main challenge lies in using body as a robotic arm to cover the entire area. It is not as easy as you think—as in the past I have often missed many areas so for something which I cannot go back and rephotograph, I did overdo it a bit.
Stitched with 70 captures inside Autopano Giga 3.0 with some edits in Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4.

This is a handheld panoramic photograph of West Kowloon from the vantage point of 中港城 China Hong Kong City in 尖沙咀 Tsim Sha Tsui stitched together in Hugin using 8 RAW capture with the Canon EOS M + Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM lens.
As usual with these panorama done handheld, the seams are not perfect, so I left the imperfect seams here as otherwise there is no way to cover the tall 環球貿易廣場 International Commerce Centre (ICC) in the middle.
ICC is the tallest building in Hong Kong as well as the fifth tallest building in the world. Notable tenants include Credit Suisse, Morgan Stanley, and ABN-AMRO.
Also in view are the shopping mall 圓方 Elements as well as many luxury condos featuring gigantic Feng Shui holes—a bizarre feature in Hong Kong architecture.

The world around us is plastered with messages telling us how to dress, what to drink, and how to behave. DETOUR 2012, Design Renegade, is an experiment in reclaiming our public place, to restore a sense of dignity, curiosity, and basic empathy.
Crying in Public is an experiment in defining the city by our emotions. Through a series of street signs, stickers, and chalkboards, passers-by are prompted to pause, reflect, and consider their emotional connection to the city: “Where was the last place you cried?” “Where was your first kiss?” Other signs will redefine specific and often overlooked alleys, parks, and verandas as ideal places for specific emotions like: “This is a good place to feel calm” or “This is a good place to freak out.”
Removable vinyl stickers with similar messaging will be distributed across Wan Chai, encouraging citizens to claim their own special places throughout the city. All these materials will encourage people to share their stories on a website customised for the project.
Civic Center is a creative studio based in New Orleans. Founded by Candy Chang and James A. Reeves in 2010, Civic Center blend art, design, education, writing, and music into projects inspired by cities. Civic Center believes that our public spaces should spark conversation among strangers, make the machinery of the city more accessible, and restore a sense of dignity to all.

Joel Shapiro (born September 27, 1941 New York City, New York) is an American sculptor renowned for his dynamic work composed of simple rectangular shapes. He grew up in Sunnyside, Queens, New York. When he was twenty-two he lived in India for two years while in the Peace Corps.
While serving his Peace Corp time in India, Shapiro saw many Indian art works, and has said that “India gave me the sense of … the possibility of being an artist.” In India “Art was pervasive and integral to the society”, and he has said that “the struggle in my work to find a structure that reflects real psychological states may well use Indian sculpture as a model.”
His early work is characterized by some by its small size, but Shapiro has discounted this perception, describing his early works as, “all about scale and the small size was an aspect of their scale”.
His later works (pictured) can have the appearance of flying, falling, being impossibly suspended in space, and/or defying gravity. He has said about this shift in his work that he “wanted to make work that stood on its own, and wasn’t limited by architecture and by the ground and the wall and right angles.”
He received a B.A. in 1964 and an M.A. in 1969 from New York University.
Shapiro is represented by The Pace Gallery in New York and Galerie Daniel Templon in Paris. He lives and works in New York City, with a summer house on the shore of Lake Champlain, in Westport, New York. He is married to the artist Ellen Phelan.

The pot cover edition was not very effective, so I bought a stainless steel strainer today as replacement.
# How it works
1. Stainless steel mixing bowl provides large container surface for cigarettes. Easy to clean and dispose of ash.
2. Instead of using oxygen-elimination as extinguishing method, I fill the bowl with water, easily found inside “smoking lounge.”
3. Strainer prevents cigarette from dropping into water accidentally.
4. Since it sits comfortably onto the bowl, the strainer also provides adequate balance to hold cigarettes in place.
5. When done, simply flip the strainer and cigarette extinguishes in water immediately.
Intended for personal use, but similar designs can be made to fit a party crowd no doubt.

“Mind the gap” is the universal messaging on metros around the world. The 大學(東鐵)火車站 University MTR station’s platform gap is especially wide because the station was built before the modern trains were built.
Originally known as the Kowloon–Canton Railway (KCR; Traditional Chinese: 九廣鐵路) before merging with the MTR Corporation in 2007, the 東鐵 East Rail was part of a major railway network in Hong Kong since the 1910. In the old days there were no station platform—you get on the train from the ground level—so the gap was not really an issue.
Some gaps along the East Rail are so severe that special “extenders” were built which moves towards the train when the train stops. I will try to find one to show you what I mean the next time I go.
The University MTR station is the railway station for 香港中文大學 The Chinese University of Hong Kong. I know this station well because I spent my first 18 years in Hong Kong living on campus (my dad is a professor at CUHK) before I moved to the US for college.

The Canon EF-M 22mm f/2 STM lens has a fairly severe vignette. When I switched on the profile lens corrections settings in Lightroom 4, I can see it fairly well. But for some captures the vignette is not really a bad thing—especially when what you wish to focus on is in the center of the frame.

Here I tried it with ISO 25600—yes, seriously. The colors of the body is a bit off—but I can’t really tell if it has to do with the lighting or not. At ISO 25600, I can expose at 1/320 sec so overall the image is sharper because the focal length is at 246mm — and as I wrote earlier, technically speaking the minimum speed for sharpness would be 1/246 sec and faster. These rule-of-thumbs are useful when determining on the field whether to push or not.
No noise reduction (NR) has been applied so you can see the grain. It is usable for journalism still, I think.

Eee-eee-aww-aww eee-eee-aww-aww… That was what it sounded like against some tribal beats blasted out from the heavily amplified speakers. These aboriginal tribes painted with patterns and colors could be seen playing their didgeridoos all day long near the pier which was frequented by both locals and tourists.
For the week that I stayed in Sydney, this was most of the music I heard when I walked out the door. It was hypnotically delicious.

I have originally sequenced this as 4K cinema output, but it seems that not a single video sharing site supports beyond 1080p so to save some bandwidth and rendering time, this is hereby rendered as 1080p.
Each frame in this 24fps videography is a full-resolution RAW capture. The photographs have not been tweaked so I have a record of what the RAW capture is like.
A total of 1,014 frames full resolution RAW files are used to create this video which span 42 seconds during playback at 24fps spanning 10080 seconds or 2.8 hours in capture time.
This is mainly a technical proof-of-concept so I can validate my hunch that working on time-lapse videography by enables better source as well as final render. Also, there is no way that I would be able to photograph something spanning 3 hours on video. But doing this at 10-second intervals only took up 11 GB on the 32 GB card.
I will try to do some capture in longer intervals in the future.
