Seattle skyline from 2018

The Smith Tower was Seattle's first skyscraper. It has 42 floors and an observatory on the 35th floor. Long ago, I worked on the 14rh floor. The elevators were operated manually by human elevator operators. The elevators were finally automated in 2017.

The triangular structure in front of the tower is a parking garage that is known as the Sinking Ship because it's pointy end looks like the prow of a ship.

Happy Window Wednesday!

Several conditions came together: the office and tower lights had just winked on within the Smith Tower and surrounding buildings and the post sunset behind the Olympic Mountains cast its lovely light.

After the cleanup I was scoping out a few spots but made my way to the bridge for sunset. I looked around but didn't recognize anyone. I managed to get some tourist to pose for a shot I wanted (see previous post) and that's when a man who was also there asked if I was me. He introduced himself and I finally got to put a face on a fellow Flickr user. Cool running into you Rick!

This photo has been photoshopped quite a bit. To a seasoned rizal shooter the details are easily noticed. Look at an image from here from your files, if you have one, and count how many light posts are missing;-)

Built in 1914, it was once one of the tallest skyscrapers outside of New York City. Now ... not so much.

This shot was taken a few minutes after the previous, this time with the 5D4. HDR done in Lightroom, while the 90D image was done with Photomatix Pro. Both were subject to Color Efex Pro. The light was changing quickly, so I don't know how the two shots would have compared if they'd been taken at the same time.

Title comes from a track by the band "Private Island".

He didn't speak English and was from Korea. I staged this using hand signals and he was a champ!

Long exposure from Columbia Tower facing Smith Tower and the Port of Seattle.

The Smith Tower, in Pioneer Square. Completed in 1914, the 38-story, 484 ft tower is the oldest skyscraper in the city, and was among the tallest skyscrapers outside New York City at the time of its completion

I captured this image during a Seahawks vs Raiders game. I was sitting in the grass watching the clouds transform into what looked something like a lava lamp! All of a sudden I noticed a flash way in the distance. I began messing with my camera settings hoping to get it to bulb without over exposing everything. Once I was dialed in I kept my eyes locked and my finger on my remote trigger! Time after time I kept guessing when it would happen and after a couple failed attempts I got it! I saw maybe 9 strikes total and captured 4 photos of one. Felt doubled stoked as the Seahawks won this game. Thanks for checking it out.

Last upload tonight, and again, everyone stay safe and have a lovely weekend.

The Columbia Tower revealed their blue lights yesterday (1/16/15). You can also see Centurylink Field on the left, which is where the Packers will pull out a tough fought victory over the Seahawks on 1/18/15. Go sports team!

Edit: My prediction was incorrect. It was a tough fought game though. Congrats Seahawks!

Last night a bunch of us lined up to shoot the moon. I wanted to try out the 200-500 for moon photography. Although the lens does make the moon appear larger, I wasn't satisfied with the distortion. Maybe I've been spoiled? But don't get me wrong, it is cool to look at all these scenes with this much compression!

I'd been thinking Smith Tower in Seattle would make an interesting subject for a black & white minimalist photo. It's almost monochromatic to begin with and stands largely by itself on the south end of downtown. On top of that, our cloudy winter climate provides the right weather for simplifying the scene.

There's beauty in everything... even traffic 😳😜 Take a few seconds to appreciate what's in front of you especially during the rush that comes with this holiday season.

The oldest skyscraper in the city! A 38-story tower built in 1914. When Seattle's pyramid-capped Smith Tower officially opened on July 4, 1914, its greatest claim to fame was its 462-foot height.

Highest position in Explore = #1 on June 15, 2009, thank you all for the wonderful support!

This shot of the Seattle skyline was taken from Beacon Hill where you can get a really great perspective of the setting sun behind the city this time of year. The weather in Seattle has been wonderful lately. Though the skyline view from Kerry Park is the most preferred "postcard" shot of the city due to the views of the Space Needle and Mt. Rainier, I personally like this view more because it really shows the city in motion. The serpentine flow of traffic in motion reflects the pulse of the city, as if it were living and breathing. The Puget Sound is the city’s important shipping waterway and is shadowed by the Olympic Mountain Range to the West. I could not believe how lucky I was on the night I chose to go on this shoot, I’ve never seen a sunset quite like this one. Hope you all enjoy!

I combined 9 bracketed exposures to really bring out all the color in the sky and in the lights of the city. A few of the exposures toward the end of the set were very long to really capture the lights from the traffic flow. Then standard post processing for levels, curves, and contrast to make it pop.

Stay focused and just lean with it!
